As you already know, the purchase of a new video game console is a pricey chore.

Okay, so because it's all kinds of exciting, it really can't be labeled a "chore." But it always leaves a pretty big dent in the wallet, almost regardless of the price of the machine itself.

Why? Oh, you know darn well why. Sadly, new systems these days don't come with a game (and they damn well should ), and there's a horde of other things you might want to buy. Personally, I usually want to spring for an extended warranty because new consoles are always a little iffy from a reliability standpoint. And that's a lot of money to pay for something that might fail in six or seven months. Then there are any accessories you might want to add, along with another controller or two.

And oh yes, the games . All told, even if the PS4 is only $500 – which, lest we forget, is $100 cheaper than the high-end 60GB PS3 model at launch – we'll still be forking over around $700 or $750, won't we? Or are you willing to spend even more? Just a couple games and an extra controller will run you another $200 almost, right? The Dual Shock 3 still costs $55; how much will the Dual Shock 4 cost? Thankfully, games should remain at the $60 price point and we're lucking out there, because in the PlayStation world, the price of software has increased $10 with each new generation: $40 for the PS1 games, $50 for PS2 games, and $60 for PS3 titles.

So that's the question- how much are you willing to spend the day you go out to pick up the PlayStation 4?

I'm hoping the PS4 will cost around $400 – $500 because I have to get a plethora of games for the PS4, PS3 & Vita around the same time the batman origins game along with Killzone for the Vita Batman, Beyond and GTA 5 for the PS3 Killzone SF, Infamous SS, Battlefield 4 and Watchdogs for the PS4 I can hold off on the extra controller for a bit

I'll probably get COD but i'm trying to break away from it Not sure how innovative it'll be Also does anyone know when MGS GZ is coming out?

If I buy a PS4 on launch day, I'd probably get just one game to go with it. Whatever games are available should be there by the time another payday rolls around, so getting the system first is what matters most to me. I'm hoping it won't be above $600.

I'm willing to spend enough for the console if it is well-priced, and a box of tissues to cry into because I won't be able to afford any games for it.

If I couldn't afford a game for it at first, I'm sure I'd sit there and stare at for a while and somehow still be happy.

Download a shit ton of demos and be done with it! That should hold you off till you can get a game. At least you won't go in blind and will be able to make better choices. If you're the demo type that is.

We'll see if there are any demos up, or if the network for PS4 works at all.

$500 is my limit. $399 for base model and $60 for a game. I got my eye on Drive Club or Killzone SF.

That's where I'm at. Really hoping they go with a $399 price point. That, plus a warranty and hopefully the Store will have some kind of PS+ Launch day special.

I'm on the fence to get PS4 at launch, since Vita and PS3 are releasing amazing games this fall. I don't have a problem buying PS4,Killzone,
Watchdogs, and Knack.

I'm willing to spend 60 dollars on a new PS3 game when the PS4 launches :p
Seriously thou, I can't justify the expense being back in college, newly wed and just getting into a mortgage 🙁
Hopefully the wife will get me one down the line, as a bday gift for good behavior LOL

Honestly with what the ps4 is offering I don't think I'd be a buyer at $400. Thing is I'm only going to be interested at launch if there's a game that I really want and with others on the way. Otherwise I'm going to wait for a while and get a bundle like I did with my ps3.

Yep, got my 80Gb MGS PS3 bundle and that was the best bargain I could have hopped for.

That's what I did. I still spent $600 and tax, but I got the BC 80 GB MGS bundle.

$600 really burned me out last time though. That was right before the economy (and my own income) tanked, and I can't say I'm at all comfortable with that price anymore. Heck.. I'm downright intollerant of that prince… I wouldn't spend it! I'd be far more comfortable at $399, and uncomfortable at $499… But yeah… $599 is out of the question for me this gen… even if it had a bundled game! The specs don't look like enough of a generation jump to justify a higher price. Don't get me wrong… the specs ARE indeed impressive… But the scale of the improvement factor from PS1 to PS2, or from PS2 to PS3 just does not appear to exist from PS3 to PS4, or at least I've not been convinced yet.

I value the Wii U at $199 right now, and would want SOMETHING I'd want bundled with it, at that price… Since it's currently $299 and bundled with something I couldn't care less for, I currently don't value having a Wii U! 😛

Likewise, if Sony launches at $599, I won't see the value in it, and won't even attempt to pick it up till later.

Besides… My PS3 is still rockin'!

zero dollars. I won't be buying a PS4 at launch or anytime soon. In 2 or 3 years I'll buy one, but not right now cause i'm perfectly happy with my PS3 that I only brought in 2010 and i'm not a millionaire that can afford a new console anytiem soon ,so i'm good.. when i do get one in a few years it will be when the price becomes reasonably priced like $300 dollars or so..

Agreed.

PS3 and PC is doing just fine right now. Until all the great games are PS4 only, THEN I'll think about getting a PS4. Already enough games coming this year to keep me busy for a long while.

As much as it pains me, ill only be springing for the console and the warranty come game day.

Hopefully, the PS store will have some kind of mini or game to hold me over until a payday or two down the road.

But yeah, the warranty is a must. So hopefully Sony will announce a price soon so I know how much to save up. Already got $150 in "in-store credit " @ gs, so ill be getting my console from there just as soon as its available for pre order.

I hope/expect it to be a decent trade-in deal for the PS3, so I'll probably go that route if I haven't already sold the PS3 before then.

It's all going to come down to a one thing for me. I know without a doubt that I will be purchasing one PS4. If the price is something that I can handle, I will be buying two of them. If my son saves his money over his summer job, he'll be able to get his own.

well the only games Im looking for right no won PS4 is the evil within… i MIGHT get infmous but ONLY if its a launch title and the evil within isnt. I also plan to get second controller and a ps4 eye cam, maybe a 1tb hard drive (but 500gb will suffice) so Ive got 800 sitting in my account set aside specifically for the ps4

Dancemachine55
Dancemachine55

PS4 Eye Cam will come packed in with the console. Sony wanna have something to go up against Kinect, at least for multiplat titles.

I think it's a good thing, means more developers will use it since all PS4 owners will have one. Hopefully it won't be over-used, but knowing Sony, we core gamers are in good hands.

Doesnt matter, I'll do what I can to get one. Obviously theres a threshold. I probably wouldnt spend anything over $650 for the system at launch. I highly doubt it will even be that much which is why Im being even slightly optimistic about purchasing it at that price, cause honestly thats obsurd.

I have a feeling Ill be able to walk away with the PS4 and at least one game for $560. But no more than that.

$300 is my current limit. Hopefully Sony will do a subsidized system, $300 or less up front and paying $10-15 a month for two years isn't bad at all IMO. Then add a game.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm probably just going to buy a PS3 again. PS3 costs $250 brand new with two games and a month of Plus and the games cost $30 and less.

On another note, the PS4 controller shouldn't cost more than $50, for the people who say, how could it cost as much as DS3 when it has more, well $50 for a DS3 is very overpriced.

sawao_yamanaka
sawao_yamanaka

No way in hell do I want them to go the Microsoft. Charging monthly you would end up paying more for it in the long run. Well the DS3 is well made and so was the DS2. At least they won't double in price. The DS2 was 25, DS3 was 50 and hopefully the DS4 is not 75 or 100. It has more but at least it doesn't cost half the system price like the WiiU pad if you break it.

@amonte,

So instead of paying $500 upfront for the PS4, you'd rather pay $300 upfront, then pay between $240 and $360 by paying $10-$15 a month for two years???

Who in their right mind would spend more for something in the long run when you can just save up a while longer and SAVE MONEY???

There is NOTHING about subscription based console purchases that makes a bit of sense.

The money you would save buying the damn thing upfront at full price would allow you to almost buy one game at the low end, and nearly three games on the high end.

Won't be paying anything for a while.

I usually wait for the 2nd or 3rd round of hardware, so all the kinks are worked out and there's more games. Launch games are usually much cheaper then too.

With GTA V, The Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, Watch Dogs, Destiny, Diablo III, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, South Park The Stick of Truth and (possibly for PS3) MGS V: The Phantom Pain, I think I'm right with my PS3, PC and 360 for now.

Once my friends upgrade (which might be a long while since we all work full time and only have time for DOTA 2 now and then) THEN I might grab a PS4 or next-Xbox. Depends on which one my friends get or which one has the better games. (PS4 will have the better games, but my friends will likely get a next-Xbox for Halo 5. They're sadly addicted to it. I still don't see the hype behind it all!)

System. Protection. Controller. At least 2 games.

I used to get all or most launch games with a system but found that by the time I finish one the others may be on sale. I don't pay for games mind you but a bargain is a bargain.

I've bought the last 3 consoles at launch, and spared no expense. But I'm really struggling to justify it this go round. I have a stack of PS3 games on the shelf (and from PSN) that I still haven't played. Unless they drop The Last Guardian on us as a launch title, I don't think I'll get a PS4 at launch…

no one can answer that because no one knows what it will offer.
for all we know $ony will include 2 controllers, the new ps eye, and a game or two included with the system.
as ive said a million times i dont care how much it costs as long as i feel its worth its price.
id happily pay 1000 bucks if it has a large SSD, a game or 2 of your choice, a PSN + 1 year sub, and a second controller.
O, and please, $ony for the love of god, PLEASE offer skins and different designs for people!
cant believe they havent offered more of these, there the perfect way to sucker people into spending money!

I'm willing to cough up 399-449 for the PS4 plus a couple games and the all important extended warranty. not quite the 799 i spent on the ps3 launch for a 60 gig with 2 games and second controller, but i have learned from my first mistake, if Sony fails to have a better launch line up i will be waiting for a possible price cut or until they have a decent game line up.. the system is only as good as its games. I really could care less about all the social crap all i want is games that i enjoy. personally Sony would be wise to add more RPG's this generation something the ps3 really lacked.

I can't see anything compelling to race out and buy it. I can't play my PS3 library, so why bother? Plus, if it's $500 in the US, it's a given that it will be $700 here in Oz. I'll buy one when there are a few more titles, or when they stop making PS3 titles, or when it's backwards compatible.
