Out with the old, in with the new.
Electronic Arts dumped Tiger Woods as the long-time cover athlete for the acclaimed PGA Tour franchise. Now, they've got a new star for the front of the box: Current World #1 Rory McIlroy.
Not only is McIlroy the new cover athlete, his name has replaced Tiger's next to the "PGA Tour" title. The new entry is scheduled to launch in June 2015 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and duffers everywhere are hoping for a quality product. Said McIlroy:
"I grew up idolizing the best golfers in the world, and now I'm one of them. One of the ways I idolized them was in video games. Playing video games is one of the ways I try to relax in my downtime, and one of my favorite video games was golf. That's what makes today's announcement so exciting to me. I am on the cover of EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR and it's named after me. That is crazy! I am more excited than I can possibly put into words."
This will be the first EA Sports game to take advantage of the Frostbite engine, which has been used in the Battlefield and Need for Speed franchises. The tagline for the fresh PGA Tour effort is "Golf Without Limits," partly due to the fact that there will be no load times between holes. Further, while it should be a true-blue simulator, there will be some over-the-top elements, too…like jets and warships.
Not really sure how such things will come into play but either way, Tiger is out and Rory is in.
