Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Delayed, Not Coming Until 2016

Geez, what big-name title this generation hasn't suffered a delay?

The list continues to grow and the latest unfortunate addition might be the most anticipated game of 2015. …well, now, the most anticipated game of 2016.

As announced over at the PlayStation Blog , Uncharted 4: A Thief's End has been delayed until Spring 2016. Directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley offered the following explanatory statements:

"Since we showed you our first gameplay reveal of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, more of the game and story have come together, and it's become clear to us that this game is much more ambitious than we originally envisioned.

After spending so many years with Nathan Drake, he means a lot to the team, and telling the climactic chapter of his adventures is a task we don't take lightly–this game deserves every bit of the attention to detail, precise pacing, and nuanced storytelling Naughty Dog is known for.

So we've made the difficult choice of pushing the game's release date. Giving us a few extra months will make certain that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End not only meets the team's high standards but the high standards that gamers have come to expect from a Naughty Dog title."

Uncharted 4 was supposed to arrive later this year, although we technically never had a launch date. Games that have been delayed thus far in the new era: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , Driveclub , Batman: Arkham Knight , Battlefield: Hardline , Evolve , Watch Dogs , Bloodborne , The Order: 1886 , and the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V .

But man, this one hurts. We really wanted the new Uncharted for the holiday season.

With everything going on, ND'S loft expectations and the lack of information anyone who thought this wouldn't happen is way off. This was easy to see coming a long ways away.

You are 100% correct in that brother. I believe Naughty Dog knows they must deliver the goods at a near perfect level with Uncharted 4.

Saw this coming. What is Sony's plan for this fall? Better be some announcements at E3

The news about them looking for talent to do work on foundational items like design of environments, etc. sort of telegraphed this to be the case. Can't say I'm surprised, either.

I think we're all well aware of what could happen when a project is rushed to meet a deadline, though. Besides… it's not so bad. Not like it'll be a FF Versus or Last Guardian sort of wait time.

Yeah I agree. It was a bit suspicious, that seek for additional talents this late before the release.

I'm not surprised and I hope none of you forget how important this game is for Naughty Dog. They lost a few important people and honestly it's left people wondering if they can maintain the same level of quality with this generation.

I think it doesn't bode well for ND that Tomb Raider will be launching first. They'll have first shot at acclimating gamers to jungle survival games for the current gen.

Don't get me started on Tomb Raider… (Okay you did) I like the Uncharted series but it doesn't come close (nor does it try) to the puzzle/exploration found in the older Tomb Raider games. I say older because the last Tomb Raider was Uncharted 1.5

Why must the last Tomb Raider and the new one basically become Uncharted starring Lara Croft?

I see a horrible future where most games offer very little that separates them from the rest.

I couldn't even beat the Tomb Raider demo on my PS1 when I first tried LV.

I kept getting owned by tigers. I eventually did but those games really made you think.

Uncharted had some lite puzzle solving but still I would like to see UC4 get even more demanding of their puzzles both its environmental puzzle platforming and it's tomb/dungeon puzzle solving.

The animals were always more threatening than the humans (in my playthoughs). I agree the series made you think. It was really rewarding to tackle a level without any assistance. I loved how you would see a door in the beginning of a level, forget about it, then come across it an hour later and remember.

Uncharted chose to put more emphasis on story, characters, and action. The series excels at all three. I'm fine with a studio creating a new IP and doing what they do best. I don't fault Uncharted, but I certainly fault the developers of Tomb Raider. It's not longer Tomb Raider. It's just Uncharted with a female lead.

imagine this….

what if this delay is intentional so when tomb raider is released, it has a tie in with uncharted. BOOM. uncharted raider, drake and croft boning spawning a child with their own series for future generations. lara and nathan will never die. (okay the last part was too much lol)

Xbox could have Tomb Raider still exclusive to it while we get Uncharted 4 instead.

I knew this was coming so I am not surprised. I am sure Microsoft will do the same with some or one of its exclusives as well. This will be a dry year exclusive wise. Bloodborne will be great but it is only one game.

This… is actually really bad news. What other PS4 exclusives do we actually have this year. With The Order's controversy and Uncharted 4's disappearance the PS4 is really beginning to struggle in exclusive content. I mean I am getting Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD in a few weeks and later this year there is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain which is multi-platform. You have Persona 5, but that is on PS3 also… so regarding exclusives… what is there?

Bloodbourne.

You may already know but Type-0 is a PSP port. Expect a lack of detail and size for most areas in the game.

I agree that the PS4 is suffering from a lack of exclusives. But honestly, I expected this situation.

Type-0 is coming out on the Xbone so its not an exclusive :

Yes, I mentioned Type-0 and The Phantom Pain as they're the 2 I'm most excited for. But as for actual exclusives I can't think of any… yes there is Bloodbourne… but well, I'll remain polite and say I don't believe it is for me. But if that is the only card PS4 has on the table… Sony is going to be in big trouble. We really need to see game which form the PlayStation's identity again… 2016 is just too far off.

I don't thin Sony is in too much trouble because the multi platform games seem to be selling more on the PS4 so far.

The Witcher 3 might move some units as well, especially considering how high end a PC you will need for that one.

Also we might get some nice surprises at E3.

I'll be getting The Witcher for PS4 (having enjoyed the first two on PC) and at a later date for PC. I expect the game to do quite well on PS4.

Not good for holiday sales. Yet another blockbuster system selling game being delayed. Makes you wonder.

Quantum Break was supposedly pushed back as well for Xbox One into 2016.

I also respect them for it and would rather they delay than rush a game, but Skyrim? I know it had its fair share of bugs but considering the sheer size of the game that was to be expected. Plus I don't remember any big game breaking bugs, I put 40 hours into it in the first week of release alone and only encountered minor ones. But I get your point, and would rather wait for a highly polished game.

what if ND has insider secrets.

for example, what if ff15 is coming out this year and they dont wanna compete against that. what if uncharted was being released q4 2015 but then they found out ff15 is being released same time, so they delayed. meh, who knows. as long as theyre working to make the game better. id prefer a delay than to deal with bugs.

Been four years since the last Uncharted, no excuse for 4 not to be out, at the very latest, this fall. Sony should be going for the kill like it used to when the PlayStation brand was at the height of its dominance. Instead its allowing MS to stay around and that's a dangerous game. Looking at the rest of 2015, the holiday lineup is a joke, headlined by a Vita port and an interactive movie inspired by horrible teen slasher films. If any 'surprise' announcement Sony has for E3 turns out like LBP3, that's not impressive either. Assuming Bloodborne delivers, it joins inFamous: Second Son as the only two great exclusives in two full years on the market. MS has three lined up this fall alone.

So Bloodborne is the end for this year. Too bad the Order got a hack job done or it'd still have looked like a good year. BB will just be too hard. We needed Uncharted around xmas.

Sooooo…Wii U still the exclusives champ until 2016 like I predicted? For company that was supposed to open the exclusive floodgates and impose its will in 2015, Sony is sure going about in in an odd way. Glad I played The Order on my daughter's PS4 while she was away instead of buying another. I'd be livid.

That being said, this is not the last delay we will here about. I suspect FF15, Zelda, Star Fox, Halo 5, Tomb Raider, and quite a few others to bow unceremoniously out of 2015 with the lame excuse of "Duurrrr….we need more time to make it right." I think these devs know these games aren't close to being done and want to sell us systems on empty promises. Worst generation ever.

EDIT: Be prepared for those GoW and Uncharted remasters, folks. Selling the same game to pay for the next one. The new Kickstarter. Who was telling me that everything was just fine in the gaming industry? Yeah right, pal.

EDIT 2: Hopefully, this will finally quiet those apologists that were running around screaming " But But But… there were never any great exclusives in the first 15 months of a Playstation system launch" Lets see them justify two years..

I don't think Nintendo and MS will destroy their holiday lineups but then again I didn't think Sony and Naughty Dog would fail either but it happened. The best PS4 exclusive has been the delay game and all ND has been good for this gen are remasters and excuse making. I can't believe how pathetically unprepared these companies were for this gen.

This is a huge blow to Sony, Halo 5 is coming this year.
After Bloodborne, what PS4 exclusive is next in line for 2015 now that UC4 has been delayed…….

yeah i think they are making a good call in terms the fact that this game needs to be top of the top like they said "the team's high standards but the high standards that gamers have come to expect from a Naughty Dog title" cos that is the way things are and they are being accomidative of those expectations.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Batman: Arkham Knight, Battlefield: Hardline, Bloodborne and the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V are still coming and everyone is syked for these games

but yeah no its a bit dissapointing but also a good thing for the reasons stated above

happy gaming

I wonder if its related to internal struggles with people leaving last year, criticism of the gameplay that was demonstrated and such.

It just seems there are never any real games coming out before Xmas to make the PS4 enticing.

Well, heres hoping the game becomes a major new year hit!

Keep playing!

Read "______"s's comment below and couple that with the fact that the xbox one is cheaper than the ps4.

I still can't see why a lot of you aren't worried about Sony's situation.

During the the first 2 years of the ps2's life we got games like (correct me if im wrong since im going solely off memory):

FFX
GRAN TURISMO 3
Midnight club
Tekken Tag Tournament
Time Splitters
And i think MGS: sons of liberty came before the 2 year mark.

The ps3 had a lackluster release with only Resistance: FOM the notable launch game, but before the two year mark, we got gems like Heavenly Sword and starhawk (or warhawk, which ever came first). Also:

Motorstorm
Elder Scrolls: oblivion
Uncharted
I'll include Lair, because it was a decent game after they included the patch to do away with sixaxis controls.

Point is, this so far has been the most dissappointing generation when it comes to quality titles. And it shouldn't have been this way since the ps4 is SUPPOSEDLY THE EASIEST SONY CONSOLE TO DEVELOP FOR, since it's much more designed to be based off a computer than the past Sony consoles.

Still awaiting greatness after all this time? Sony is CLEARLY losing its edge when it comes to giving us memorable software. Might have to get a Wii U to hold me over until Sony rights this sinking ship.

A little dissapointed with this delay but lets wait for E3 to see if Sony announce anything for the holiday season.

PS3_Wizard, MGS2 came out in November 2001, for people saying that the first year of a console there is always a lack of games, look at the PS2 in 2001:

Yep thats what I figured. This point in the ps3 and ps2 lifespan was already loaded with good to great games. The ps4 doesn't have 1 multiplatform or exclusive game that i find to be memorable…
