Most are assuming Sony will unveil the actual PlayStation 4 console at E3 in June.

But recent evidence indicates that the company might reveal the new console's design a little earlier. This according to Tech Hunter , as reports are suggesting Sony will show off the PS4 in May. Maybe in less than a month…?

That might not be too shocking, as it's rumored that Microsoft will announce the new Xbox some time very soon at a private event. Speaking of a private event, that may be how Sony reveals the PS4's aesthetic appeal; i.e., at a private event of some kind. Does that mean the public still won't get to see it until E3? Or will there be plenty of leaked photos and screens from that "private" little party? As for what the PS4 will actually look like, we can only guess, but Sony Worldwide Studios vice president Michael Denny said:

"I’m not sure it’s instructive for me to start trying to describe or talk about what I’ve seen or haven’t seen in terms of the actual look of the box. But yeah, you know it’s going to be another fantastic design and we can’t wait to reveal it."

Responding to criticism for not actually showing the PS4 console during its announcement event in February, Sony has said "it's just a box" and that's not what's critically important. We agree with that, but if Microsoft does indeed announce their new console soon, it would make sense for Sony to attempt to reattain some lost hype and momentum by unveiling the PS4's design. The timing might be just right.

It's "just a box", but if it's aesthetically pleasing and compatible with the rest of peoples' living room gadgets, it will only make ps4 more desirable.
I sincerely hope Sony get the design and build quality just right.

I comment whenever I can but you'll notice I usually avoid articles on racing and sports games because I don't have much to say. It's just become like a habit 🙂

Quite right. I, for one, am not fond of the new controllers' look but it's not a big deal. If I however feel like I need to put a paper bag over my PS4, I'll seriously have second thoughts about buying one. I'm shallow. Who knew?

I have to ask….

If the PS4 is ugly, and the Next-Box is the sexiest thing you've ever seen, would you cross the table and become an Xbot, simply because it looks better?

I really look forward to see the design of this box. I am not the slightest bit worried that it'll not meet expectations. One might say a lot of things about Sony, but they do know design.

did know design.
up until the 2 redesigns for the ps3, and a few other things are a bit of a monster.
some things they knock out of the park, the xperia z is a beauty to behold!
still wondering which sides going to come out in this.

I don't understand…..

The PS3 following a similar design to the PS2.

It just added curves….

Design is a key factor these days, no one wants "ugly" in the room. Both design and specs sell a product. Its marketing.

They can have it any colour as well, as long as they have it black.

Keep Playing!

Box design is not a limiting factor, but it's never been Sony's strong point imo. It would be nice to see something symmetrical and slick!

I could care less about how it looks….if I cared about looks I would have never bought any of Nintendos systems and also would have passed on the Dreamcast simply because of the looks of the controller. Looks are literaly the last thing on my mind when it comes to a console.

I do love the compact size of the DC console itself though.

Absolutely! The Dreamcast is still to this very day the system that impressed me the most. I couldn't and still find it hard to believe they could pack such a awesome device in such a small sleek design, RIP Sega hardware.

The controllers though top my list of the ugliest tech yet, followed very closely by the N64 controllers. It wasn't just that I thought they were ugly though, it also had a lot to do with how uncomfortable they were to me, I constantly got hand cramps from both of them which kept me from really enjoying some games.

Hope it's better than the current slim and not as giant as the fat PS3.

Here's hoping for that stupid ball shaped one with eyes.
….
Actually I like the idea of eyes. Yes, ps4 needs digital eyes that.animate. And when the system powers on it speaks, speaks from the console, not the TV.
"hello temjin zero zero one" in a real crappy computer voice…..
Sigh…. If only
=p

I'm ready to see what the PS4 is going to look like. I thought the PS3 was a little strange looking at first, but I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

Actually seeing the box will give me something to picture in my mind in case I want to dream about it.

Little strange?
It looked like a bling bling George Foreman grill with Spider man the movie font type.

It originally had a Batterang controller too

My PS3 came bundled with Spider man 3 and was almost hot enough to cook on.

Absolutely no mercy for M$ it seems. Any momentum M$ gets, Sony will try to counter. Not sure if this is the intention, but it's just awesome.

I hope they keep the orchestra tuning as the boot up sound, or at least as an option. As a classical musician that impresses all my friends and makes it one special personal detail for me.

funny how they go from who gives a &^%$ about a box!?
to a fantastic design.

Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

You can be excited for the design of your console, while at the same time realising that at the end of the day, it is just a box.

EASY for Sony (& the author of this article) to say it's "just a box"; to Sony – put up or shut up!

What do you mean by, "put up or shut up"? It doesn't make any sense.

Don't care too much about the design, honestly. If it isn't so pretty I"ll just hide it somewhere or keep it out of sight as possible. With the current generation of consumers design plays a "key" factor in the sell of a product. Long as the machine can run the software, I'm game.

@WorldEndsWithMe: I love the fat/original PS3; it's shiny, black, and empowering. Not sure if they'll make it slim until they can reconfigure the insides once the current hardware becomes cheaper and more readily available, hence future slim versions.

I think 360's slim design suffered from overheating issues early on and angered countless customers…

Lol, so many people have said that.

Why are people ashamed of what the console looks like?

It's like being ashamed of what your DVD player looks like.

Akuma_

I really can't see it….

A person stands in a shop, staring at the Next-Box, and the PS4.

The sales guy is there telling him all about both consoles, what their specs are, and what they are both best at,

Then the guy says "Okay, you know what, I will choose this one!"

Then the sales guy goes "Great, so sir why did you choose this console, if you don't mind me asking?"

Then the guy goes "Because it looks better! and will make my Entertainment Unit OOZE sexiness, all the women shall bow before me, because I have a sexy console, even though none of my friends have this one, and it isn't as good as the other console, I don't care because it LOOKS amazing".

Yeah…. can't see it.

I REAAAAAALLLY find it impossible to believe, and if there really are people out here that do that, then it will make me lose a bit of faith in humanity.

My consoles are in a dimly lit area and the only thing I see is the tiny red LED needed to find the power switch.

Even when the light is brighter, the console can't be seen well anyway, so who cares what it looks like?
