Unfortunately, we haven't seen that killer AAA PlayStation 4 exclusive just yet.

We thought we might get one right out of the gate with Killzone: Shadow Fall but that didn't pan out. And while a lot of people really liked inFamous: Second Son (including me), that didn't really qualify, either.

Now, after The Order: 1886 slipped up in its quest to be the first 9+ critical darling, I guess it all falls on Bloodborne 's shoulders to deliver. Granted, I think many critics did gamers a grave disservice by screwing up their reviews for Ready at Dawn's effort (check our newly posted review for more detail), but The Order still isn't a legit Game of the Year contender. That's what we expect from a AAA PlayStation exclusive, do we not?

Well, now it's From Software's turn. And this time, we might finally get the game that wows critics and gamers alike. It does seem as if reviewers are automatically saying harder games are inherently better than easier ones (a hardcore elitist streak that needs to die), and so long as it isn't too linear and doesn't put too heavy of an emphasis on story, most critics should love Bloodborne . Yeah, there's some sour grapes here – as true as they are – but I do believe the game will be excellent.

Problem is, it's not exactly a "mainstream" title. So maybe we still need Uncharted 4: A Thief's End to hit huge later in the year…

I think this game can get 9 ' for sure. Problem is it has a lot working against it as did The Order. It will be interesting to see how it scores for being different also. Hopefully the familiarity with the souls series helps it somewhat.

No. Friggin. Chance. It will probably get another hate campaign tailored to it before release.

I believe you may be right… It's going to get as much hate as the Order did… Even if it deserves a 10 I doubt most these idiots reviewing games now a days will give it justice… I'd still be getting it bc from what I've seen already on this game, I know I will enjoy it

TomBradySucks

No way it gets the amount of hate the order did. I say that because of the type of game it is. The Order received a lot of pre-release hate because it was a TPS/action title. Those types of games have bigger audience, and therefore potentially more haters. It also was a completely new IP, BloodBorne will have the support of all the fans of the Souls games that came before it

The Souls games have a weird-cult like following of elitist types. If anything I believe that they will do a good job at hyping th game up leading up to release. I expect the game to score in the 85-90 range but not sell as well as the Order does ironically.

Unfortunately for me, I have tried like hell to like these types of games, but they never really clicked with me. If the reports of this title being "toned-down" difficulty wise perhaps I'll give it a go!

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

But if it does give up the insane difficulty of the souls series that community may rage, if it's still super hard the pressure for it to be the first big 9+ AAA on the PS4 will cause the critics to turn against the difficulty in favor of mainstream appeal. I think it could run into a buzz saw of lose/lose press.

Not saying this is fact but it could happen. Demon's Souls had the benefit of nobody expecting it, and then the multiplay dark souls had the benefit of the original cult following snowballing to pick up Xbox fans.

TomBradySucks

Yea that is certainly a possibility. I just believe that any "spiritual successors" to a game series with such a strong following will have the benefit of th doubt of the reviewers.

I just hope that the difficulty is toned down so I could enjoy the title. Something more like DMC

Hopefully you're right, even though it's a new IP it's also kind of not. So there's that possibility of general support.

From Software already has a level of expectation connected to this type of game already. The Order was easy to pick on because it has no reputation about what it is going to be or should be based on it's history.

Even if it were worse, I don't know that it would be able to have a hate campaign attached to it to the same extent The Order did.

I think this game is going to be fantastic. Problem is it is a niche game and I'm not sure how people are going to like it.

At best everyone loves it because it is new and old souls fans like the change of pace, and it allows less skilled players to enjoy it as well.

Worst case is that old fans hate the new direction, and no new fans give it a chance because they know the series reputation.

From everything I have seen I will enjoy the heck out of this game.

Wait, weren't they introducing "easier" modes of play for bloodborne? No way will it reach critical acclaim with the same difficulty level as the Dark Souls games. Then again, it's practically everything that The Order wasn't.

Who am I kidding?! Reviewers abroad can't wait to be the first controversial review that crap out the worst score possible.

Shauneepeak

How do people keep getting this? No mention of this at all and Miyzaki said it may even be harder than Demon's Souls which is considered the hardest off all the Souls games.

Every time From mentions "Hoping to attract a larger audience" people seem to instantly scream "Easy mode confirmed" I swear something must get lost in translation.

Also
DKS2 PS3 91 Metacritic with 69 reviews.
DKS PS3 89 Metacritic 54 reviews.
DS 89 Metacritic 81 Reviews.

High scores aren't the question. I absolutely love From Software's work. It's whether it'll be the reason people start buying more PS4s. The "niche" part of the conversation. If it's not any easier, then yes, a lot of people will pass it up.

… But you're right. I added a question mark because I wasn't sure. People keep getting this because Google search "bloodborne easier". That's how. About 10 dozen hits of crap to sift through isn't exactly as cut and dry as you make it sound. I don't spend much time nitpicking the details until we're a week away from launch.

Shauneepeak

I can see it selling between 1-2Mil copies 1mil would be the safe bet and 2mil the high end because of the lack of games. Hell we might even get more after the Order controversy and people dying for that true Sony AAA game to kick off this year and then who knows how many Xbox and PC gamers may take the plunge and get a PS4 because of their love for the series.

It already has 100K preorders with still a month left to go which is VERY good considering that is almost 10% of the total sales for DKS2 on PS3 and the preorder bonus this time around is fairly crappy.

Shauneepeak

Should be an easy 9 seeing as the B-team managed that with DKS2, which many fans consider the least single player rich game in the Souls series.

And you deserve down votes as this is a flawed opinion you have. What you consider great is not the standard. The Order is a good game to me and most as was Shadow Fall,Second Son and DriveClub.
What people like you fail to realize is that reviews don't and have never made a game great.
They are irrelevant.MS has not had anything better as the X1 is behind in sales the last time I checked.
All PS4 exclusives have outsold the X1 exclusives. Not to make this a versus thing, but as usual you make no sense.
I may get an X1 later when it is $299 this fall, but really there is no compelling software that stands out at all compared to what PS4 has and will have.
Unlike you I actually play games for myself instead of being a sheep for the media. It's your type of thinking that has ruined gaming.

Darth: Calm down.
I am talking about system sellers here, not what you or I think are great games.
I talk about wave-making, buzz-creating system sellers that put its platform in the spotlight and dominates the GOTY awards, sets the bars for others to follow. Releases that hovers over the multiplats.

That's one of the, if not THE prime purpose of a platform exclusive.

So put personal feelings aside, calm down a few notches and try to look at this from an objective point of view – if you are able to.
This is not about you or me at all.

What exactly is a system seller? People are buying PS4 so the system is selling. It is the highest selling system this generation.System sellers do not exist as far as one game selling a system.Look at the WiiU.By your logic the WiiU is the only game with so called AAA 90+ rated games and it is being outsold by the Vita.GOTY? LOL all of that stuff is none sense. No one I know in person even mentions AAA,reviews, system sellers or GOTY so how can any of that have an impact on sales or perception of what is or is not a good game?I am always objective and what you are saying make no sense at all since the rest of the world does not care about the things you mention.

Darth:

GTA4 was the system selling title for me for thePS3. I just could not stand waiting for the PC version, so I went out and got me a PS3. There were other reasons too, like the bluetooth-player and a buddy having one, but the final push to get me to the store was GTA4.

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of people out there who got that same "final push" towards a purchase because of franchises like Uncharted, who just look so damn awesome (regardless of how you feel about the linear nature of them).

So I do not believe the rest of the world don't care about these things. You don't – obviously – but there are others who firmly believe in the significance of strong exclusives. And frankly, at least up until now, the exclusives *have* defined the consoles. That's just how it is.

But times may be changing. And I think they are. The exclusives no longer play the role they used to. And this is what I believe Sony too have concluded with, and that, logically, will have an effect on how much they will invest in exclusives this gen.

Ben Dutka PSXE

Beamboom: I don't really see that. Yes, some of the recent exclusives have fallen a little short but it's not like they're BAD games. And besides, we haven't seen the biggest of the big this generation yet. The heftiest PlayStation exclusives have names like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, God of War, etc.

DemonNeno

There are plenty of games that we know very little about that are introducing different gamers into the world next gen. Not sure if they'll substantially sell systems, but won't hurt momentum.

I could make a list, but am a tad busy trying to find myself a sub $400 work laptop. 😛

Beamboom

Demon,
it's not often that exclusive titles we know very little about turns out to be GOTY material. It happens, sure, but it's not common.

Ben,
I am certain with no doubt that Uncharted will rock the show at this years GOTYs. I mean, that's a given. If not we are in *serious* trouble.

The other franchises very much depends on the budgets put into it. I obviously hope I am wrong here, we want great games all of us, but the hunch is there: I get the distinct feeling Sony don't have that same focus (read: budgets) this time around.

GoW… Well… Nah. That franchise feels so done now. GT is a safer bet in that respect.

But with that "etc" you end your franchise list with I am really uncertain of what you have in mind. A new LBP? I don't think it will make much of a number out of itself. I believe we already saw that with the last title. Like GoW, I got a feeling this franchise has had its time. Same with yet another Infamous. It just doesn't have the ring of a success to me.

We got that new mystery title from Guerilla Games. That one might of course be THE shizzle that robs the GOTY award shelf.

… But then? What else of GOTY candidates do we realistically have left?

Another thing @Beamboom, what Xbox games do you think will be AAA, 90+ system-sellers this year since you are such an expert? Other than Halo 5 there is nothing.Matter of fact what AAA 90+ system sellers (whatever that it is) has the Xbox had since Halo 4? I'll wait.

Tomb Raider has the potential to be a 90+ if they expand upon the reboot from 2013. I like the idea of a more "open-world" Umcharted (others may not).

And Quantum Break is probably releasing this year for Xbox. Anything Remedy does shouldn't be taken lightly.

Uncharted 4 probabky trumps all 3 of Xboxes exclusives tho. But those are 4 titles not to be taken lightly

But to try to answer your questions the best I can: I have no idea what games comes up for the Xbox – nor do I care, nor do I understand why you ask. It's you who desperately try to make this into a platform fanboy rage, not me.
When did I talk about Xbox, again? And why should I care?

DemonNemo diagreed with my post, pointing at other releases this year. That made me ask, since what I talk about are killer AAA PlayStation 4 exclusives. GOTY material. Stuff that push consoles.
Like, you know, is the topic of this article.

@Beam you have mentioned Xbox on this site plenty of times before and have compared Sony's exclusives to Microsoft's so I assume when you say PS4 has no AAA you are obviously comparing it to Xbox. What other reason is there to mention things like GOTY or AAA when there has to be something else to have those things for something not to have them. It's like up and down.Something has to be up for something else to be down.

@Darth:
I think you may have me mixed with someone else. I don't own an Xbox myself, and never will. I've expressed enthusiasm in regards to Sunset Overdrive cause that game simply looks totally awesome, but other than that I don't talk much about the Xbox at all.

I've said that I don't rule out them actually releasing more high-budget exclusives than Sony this gen, and that I stand by. It's only logical, since they are the clear underdog now. Not even a price cut has worked out for them. So investing in exclusive system sellers is really the only way to regain market share.

On the other hand, Sony are cutting down on their 1st party studios and people are resigning. May this be a sign of something? One should be able to speculate and analyze this without anyone going personal on your ass.

Again, this is not about my personal preferences or anything personal at all really. It's just observation and conclusions drawn from them – that may or may not be correct.
It's interesting times!

Was Infamous: Second Son not a Triple AAA exclusive? I don't regard Bloodborne any higher than that really. It's pretty bad that we're in 2015 and still seeking exclusives to make the PS4 note worthy. These days the games I am interested in are all Mult-Platform – Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Tekken, Tomb Raider etc. Games which were notorious got being on the PlayStation. The problem is last gen, the Xbox bought out many 3rd parties and in a sense devalued the Playstation. Beyond Naughty Dog & Quantic Dream the PlayStation doesn't have anyhting going for it.

However, it still has all the 3rd party games games running better on the PS4, so I am still on good terms with the Playstation for now… had it been the other way and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was less powerful on the PS4… I might have even gone with the Xbox this time, which in itself states a lot about the impact PS4 exclusives have right now.

DarthNemesis
DarthNemesis

Same as for any console.Third party have been the biggest in the industry for years now and the entire industry really needs to improve. The last FF game was trash,Tekken has went down the gutter and MGS has just changed to be like other games.Tomb Raider had to reboot to get attention thanks to Uncharted, but everyone has their reasons to buy whatever console so once again so called AAA exclusive is not even relevant today as Nintendo with the best rated games have sold the least.Everything you named are rehashed franchises which is another problem, not enough new ideas and franchises.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

I don't think Second Son was. It didn't showcase anything, it toned down the gameplay for simpletons, story didn't exist, hero sucked. It didn't blow anybody away.

But if you wanna say it was an exclusive that cost a lot to make, then yeah. Quality? eh, no 9s across the board or anything.

Vivi_Gamer
Vivi_Gamer

I'm sorry DarthNemesis, but The Phantom Pain is hardly rehashed. If anything it is leaping huge boundaries to the equivalent of how MGS2's gameplay was such a massive jump from MGS1. The open world mechanics aren't like the traditional sandbox games – which I found find bland as there isn't much to do in them. What The Phantom Pain is offering is just an expanded environment for he plays to infiltrate the mission as they see fit. The sheer amount of content in MGS5 is going to be amazing and I just cannot wait for it.

As for the other series (which was only a few btw) I see your point on Tekken 7, looks like it is doing nothing to really step up over 6 – much like how 6 didn't really improve over 5. Final Fantasy I disagree with though. XV looks to be very different from the last entries (Which has many people already whining.) but I am very interested to see what it has to offer, looking forward to the demo next month too.

But as far as Bloodborne goes, i don't really see what that has to offer. But then again I found Demons Souls to be one of my worst gaming experiences of last gen. So I don't really have much enthusiasm for it to begin with.
