Bethesda Teams Up With Shinji Mikami, Readies The Evil Within

Bet you didn't expect this. Those teaser videos had absolutely nothing to do with an RPG…

Today, Bethesda Softworks has announced The Evil Within , a new survival horror game in development at Tango Gameworks under the watchful eye of renowned designer Shinji Mikami. Mikami is best known for creating the legendary Resident Evil franchise.

The Evil Within is indeed a "cross-generation" title, in that it's coming both current- and next-generation consoles; the PS3, 360 and PC along with the upcoming new systems. We can expect more information on the game on Monday, April 22 but in the meantime, they've released a live action trailer that is just downright insane. It reminds one of Silent Hill in a way, doesn't it? Said Mikami:

We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within. My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action."

For the sake of the genre purists, Mikami, I hope you mean more horror than action. It's a sore point for horror fans…

Holy Crap! Might the survival/horror genre be resurrected!? No gameplay footage and I'm guessing this is a ways off, but who knows maybe this will take us back to where RE4 left off.

I would just like to say that it doesn't really make sense to release a teaser for something that NOBODY HAS EVER HEARD OF BEFORE!!! I mean, a teaser is supposed to make you wonder and speculate, right? How can you wonder about a game that you don't even know the premise of? On top of all that, it makes the people who were hoping for Fallout or TES disappointed. I'm sure that it's just to attract attention in the end, but I would like to think there are other ways.

Speak for yourself, mate. I heard about this game months ago. It was originally unveiled as Project Zwei on 25 April 2012. There's an official website which you can check out here : http://projectzwei.net/

Details about the gameplay are still being withheld but various sources around the internet report that Tango Gameworks will reveal more information in the coming week. Here's hoping for a return to true survival horror.

I'm with you fatal, it doesn't make any sense even if some new IP was rumored months ago on some website, a peek at some burning flowers and some barbed wire isn't a "teaser" unless it pertains to something well-known. If it's a new IP like this, the teaser should have something to do with the game.

The entire point of the teaser was to get tongues wagging and it certainly accomplished that.

They already knew that! It did drive interest in the new project too, which is what they wanted.

I sure as hell do not want fallout 4 with their buggy mess. I am glad for this game.

Oh I hope it is actual survival horror. Maybe even in the way that Call of Cthulhu was first person survival horror since Bethesda is usually associated with first person adventures.

Perfect blend of action and horror eh?
I'm not worried, he did work on Shadows of the Damned after all.

I'm not even particularly a horror fan but this still strikes me as a hopeful sign of great things to come.

I would LOVE to have a spectacular survival horror game so early in PS4's life cycle.

I hope Shinji Mikami can still work his magic like the old days and creep me the hell out.

this looks old school, by that i mean it reminds me of what
resident evil use to be like, on the edge of your seat, not
knowing whats laying in wait around the next corner kind of game.

aaaaaaaaaah, that was so f*cking twisted!
sweet, this looks freaking PERFECT!
that is IF the game actually turns out half like this though.
silent hill but turned far more sinister and twisted, i love it!
so happy to see survival horror slowly make a comeback!
with all the recent indie mini titles like the SCP series, slender, the recently announced closure, the amnesia series, and now this.
sh*tting your pants in fear is back baby!!!!!!

@fatelementality: Isn't that the point of a teaser, to advertise a product that attracts attention by making people curious of what 'that' product will be? I've heard of this game as well but the teaser disappoints for a different reason.

The live-action is off-putting, and states the game is early in development which refrains from showing gameplay or they decided live visuals would better depict their idea of the games world and style—definitely the latter because I've seen and believe the visuals to be on par. Gameplay will soon be shown as development has been over a year (possible E3 trailer), perhaps?

Teasers are different from trailers. A teaser is shortened and vague, leaving questions and the viewer generally wanting more; a trailer is an advertisement showing a brief excerpt or a continuation of excerpts for that game, film, etc.

Bethesda knows people want F4 and TES but that doesn't mean they can't branch out and tackle other game types. Hell, even I'd get bored handling the same game my entire career…
