Ben-DutkaThe PlayStation 4's userbase continues to grow at a decent clip.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) has announced that cumulative sold-through sales of the PS4 have surpassed 18.5 million units worldwide as of January 4, 2015. This means holiday sales exceeded 4.1 million.
Furthermore, nearly 11 million users have joined PlayStation Plus. If you didn't already know, subscribers have access to cloud storage, the Instant Game Collection (6 free games per month; 2 each for the PS4, PS3 and Vita), and year-round discounts. Said SCE President and Group CEO Andrew House:
"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as their console of choice throughout this holiday season. We will continue to reinforce and deliver additional value on PS4 as the best place to play, by bringing even more exciting content and by enriching our wide array of service offerings."
PS4 software sales remained strong as well, as the total take for the system has hit 81.8 million in retail stores globally and via digital downloads. 17.8 million PS4 titles were sold during the holiday rush.
And now that Xbox One has returned to its $399 price point, PS4 might once again race out to a bigger lead.
Thats crazy 18.5 million Ps4 in the 1st year. Never thought it be that high a year ago.
I can't believe Microsoft was willing to forfeit the price which made its console sell. Perhaps they think it'll fare better now that some have bought into it along with the development plans. I don't see either winning over sales quite as much as the price.
Should Sony remain offensive, there's little that Microsoft can deal out to slow momentum again.
I think Microsoft is banking on the idea that consumers would see a sharp increase of sales of the Xbox One and think that its the more popular console now…even if it really isn't.
It was a perfect storm…all the bad publicity Sony received from the movie industy hack and Xbox One receiving a slew of advertising for its price drop. Maybe it really was a good idea for microsoft in afyer all.
Not saying that Microsoft will win the generation, but their luck might be changing. Now more than ever, Sony will need to deliver the exclusives, and soon.
While I do agree with all the extra fuss plaguing Sony, I already knew that the Xbox sales would increase. I look at a console as an investment in a savings account vs something more risky. Even on those terms, for the early adopters of the XB1 that were forced to pay $500, I wouldn't just be scratching my head. With the games and gift cards being passed out like candy, the xb1 console was essentially selling for ~$250. That price barely a year after launch… My God.
Now, don't get me wrong, but as great as 18.5 million consoles sold to consumers sounds, I am more impressed by another number.

I am to lazy to do the exact math, but it seems that every PS4 owner out there has around 4-5 games each.
PlayStation owners are buying games, and that is good news for not only developers and investors, it bodes well for us gamers too.
Producing AAA titles on the PS4 will begin to look even more attractive with high sales and attach rates which means… we win.
Aye, this is what counts – more game sales mean more games :). Tell you what though, an install base of 18.5 million after it's second holiday season is insane. I remember a couple of years ago when all the PC kids were talking about consoles being dead, that talk seems to have died off a little now ;).

@axe99: Yeah, I remember that clearly. People were talking about how steam and cloud based consoles would take over this gen, and it would probably be the last true generation of consoles. We'll see where we are in a few years, but with sales numbers like these, I foresee more console generations to come.

Wow that's a big number to be at in one years time… Think Sony would have sold even more if they would've advertise their console as much as MS does…Speaking of MS I wonder how much they've sold overall
