Epic Shows What Unreal Engine 4 Can Do With “Infiltrator” Demo

We've seen several tech demos that showcase next-generation graphics. Or rather, what next-gen visuals could look like.

The latest comes from Epic Games, as the Gears of War developers has released an Unreal Engine 4 tech demo named "Infiltrator." The almost four-minute video shows a soldier exploring a futuristic metropolis of some kind.

Epic did make it clear that like most tech demos, Infiltrator is just that; in other words, it's not a new game. However, as UE4 is destined to be a very popular engine in the next generation of hardware (as UE3 was this generation), we should be seeing a lot of it in the near future. We already know that Daylight , Fortnite and Primal Carnage: Genesis will be using the new Unreal Engine, and many more titles are likely to follow. Don't forget that Square Enix has signed a long-term deal with Epic to license UE4 for multiple new projects.

So does this tech demo make you all sorts of excited for the new generation? …or were you already excited?

Hate to be a downer but if this thing dominates like UE3 did I expect a lot of similar looking, lower quality visual presentations and technical error proliferation once again. Batman did a fantastic job but was an anomaly and Mass Effect did okay but I'm glad ME is going with Frostbite now.

ME will be much better off with Frostbite. I personally didnt ever get how ME was getting a free pass in the graphics department. There was much more wrong with those games than others that just got trashed on, ala GT5. But with Frostbite the games should excel very nicely and be that all around great game they were hailed as.

Not to mention that even those that had above par graphics, they still retained the blocky controls that were super annoying.

World are you taking into consideration the PC counterparts or just the console games?

Cesar-

Im certain hes talking about the console implementation. And considering this article is in direct correlation with the PS4 its safe to assume such things considering it was typically poor performing on the PS3.

What it comes down to is the developers; some made it work, others didnt and in turn console owners got games that wern't quite hanging with the best.

I love how in this trailer they trash the facility that the infiltrator was infiltrating in order to catch him. Two things, one he was either just going in to get info and they blew up everything for nothing, or he was going in to destroy it and they helped him alone >.<

It looks pretty good but I wonder if it will have that "look" that the UE3 engine had. Most games on the UE3 engine looked pretty bad except for a few exceptions(borderlands, bioshock infinite, TERA).

Personally I much prefer cryengine and frostbite.

Theres quite a few games that utilized it well but theres so many more that just, pretty much showed that it just wasn't up to par with those you mentioned among the best engines out there which are ND's and Sony Santa Monicas that they used in GoW3. So im with you on that 100%.

Yeah those were just off the top of my head. I know people have used the Engine well, but usually those games have incredible art direction.

Games that just use it all tend to have that look you know.

Yeah I think the Naughty Dog engine is great and so is the one they used in God of War. A lot of the first party engines on the PS3 are great looking. I only mentioned Cryengine and Frostbite because they are the other big multiplat engines. Unity can be really great too actually but I haven't seen it utilized really well since F.E.A.R 1.

I like the cryengine also, I liked it better than the Frostbite. But im looking forward to seeing BF4 run. But you're right you knew when you were playing a game on the unreal engine. And was it like something coded in the engine that every character model (male) had to be super muscular and defined? I mean every game that utilized that engine that I can think of had huge dudes in it. 😉
Aside from Mass Effect of course.

BigRailer,
I suspect the explanation regarding the muscular guys is as simple as the default male models in the Unreal design tool are built like that, and lazy designers just took it from there cause it gave them a head start. That simple.

Personally I think Unreal receives a lot of unfair flak for blame that *should* be put on the designers of the various games.

Xenris,
Are the FEAR games built on Unity? Wow I didn't know that! Were all three built on Unity or just the first?

I can agree that Unreal engine deserves some flak thats not warranted and I agree fully that its on the developers. Some were able to use it and implement it just fine.

Beam, you know what I think I made a bad call on the unity engine. It seams that FEAR is done on the lithtek: jupiter ex engine. I could have sworng it was on the unity but maybe MAYBE I got mixed up because FEAR1 looks incredibly similar to the game SLENDER in some of the assets and lighting it uses, so I might have made an assumption.

I can't find out if lithtek turned into Unity or not I'll do some more digging.

Bigrailer, It would seem that most UE3 engine games had big buff male characters. Borderlands, Mass Effect, and some MMORPGs using the engine being some exceptions.

Beamboom, I agree for example, Bioshock infinite looks amazing, and its using UE, but the art direction is what makes it look incredible. The only things that suffer from the engine are certain powers, you can tell they used engine assets for some of them. For example your water blast power looks kind of terrible, and some fire textures are a bit weird. But other than that it looks AMAZING and its on that engine.

interested to see how this turns out, this is suppose to be running on ps4 in real time too which is nice.
just gotta wait to see it implemented in a actual game now.
makes me a little concerned that the first UE4 game is going to be fortnite though, does not really look like a game that will show off the engines prowess no?
i was hoping for something that would straight away put it to the test.
oh well, hopefully the much needed return to unreal tournament is not too far off!
come on epic, if you dont have a UT game out within 2 years of next gen systems releasing theres going to be heck to pay!
heck i tells ya!!!!!

It's running in-engine, it doesn't say it's running on the PS4…

Well, I'm an Unreal-fan. Has been since I first fell in love with Unreal Tournament many, many years ago, and the love has been maintained by the fact that many of my very best gaming experiences has been with games built on Unreal, most noteworthy being the BioWare games but also games like Borderlands and Bioshock. Games I'd never, never want to be without.
