Is Sony Saving Big PS4 News For E3?

You can't expect Sony to have spilled all the beans, right?

After they unveiled the PlayStation 4 in February, everyone began to talk. Well, the company will have to keep people talking, especially after Microsoft announces their new console. Therefore, one has to assume Sony is holding something back for E3 in June.

Obviously, we're expecting to see the console, and we fully anticipate a date and price. However, what about beyond that? Maybe they'll reveal the expected launch lineup, which we're all starting to piece together already. We know Killzone: Shadow Fall and DriveClub will be part of that list; how about inFamous: Second Son ? And will multiplatform titles like Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag also be available right out of the gate?

Maybe Sony is holding onto one last trump card, such as Uncharted 4 for the PS4. That would definitely make some noise, and would basically make the PS4's launch lineup the absolute best this industry has ever seen. But what else might Sony save for E3? Do you think there are features of the new machine we don't know about yet? Back on the software side of things, Sony might also want to stick to their bread-and-butter; i.e., exclusives, and show off several huge new IPs for the PS4. I don't think Gran Turismo 6 will make it but who knows…?

I really believe they are indeed holding out on the juicy stuff for E3. 😛 I can't wait to see what they show, I am excited right now for the PS4.

So the entire world has proven that the thing they care about most, is what the console looks like.

So Sony has made a great move by not showing that, because pretty soon Microsoft will show off their console, and probably show most of it off all at once, maybe at E3?

The whole world wants to see the new consoles, so if Microsoft shows the next-box at E3, then BAM Sony officially shows the actual console, what a great way to steal the show from MS!

I am really pumped for this years E3!

I haven't liked any of the Xbox consoles physically, Sony's are all pretty good except for the super slim.

I was surprised at how big the PS3 Slim was. I think it is bigger in width than the fatty.

The super slim reminds me of crinkle cut fries.

No I hated the regular slim too. Its not as bad as the super slim but its nothing special.

Both the Slim and and Superslim look like cheap Chinese knock offs when compared to my shiny chromed out fully backwards compatible 60gb PS3. It's not even up for debate. The new PS3's look and feel cheap. I got a Superslim Move bundle recently that has a 250gb HD. It came with LBP Karting and even has a steering wheel attachment for the Move. 30 day PS plus membership too.

I got a great deal on it and decided to get it because I know how unreliable the 60gb PS3's are. My 60gb is an official Gamestop refurbished unit and it's lasted me 3 years and 4 months so far. Stay clear of the used 60gb unless they have been officially refurbished. Some people will use the blow dryer trick to get them running long enough to trade in :(. It's temporary fix at best.

Anyways the Superslim Move bundle is a great value but It just looks and feels cheap. It doesn't even have autoload for your game discs. You have to slide it open on top and place the game in the Blu Ray drive. It just doesn't feel or look like a Sony hi-tech device. The regular slim is so damn plain looking too and I don't like the matte finsish on it at all. At least the Superslim is a little shiny. Can't decide which is uglier.

I didn't like the original Xbox's looks nor did I care for the original 360's but the 360 squat looks way better that any of the cheap looking PS3 Slims in my humble opinion.

I know it's just a box and maybe I'm beeing too superficial but I truely hope whover designed the PS3 Slims stays FAR away from the PS4.

Haha. All of the fixes that people could do for the 60GB were only temporary.

My 60GB Fatty lasted me 4 years till it's first YLOD, then I did the proper fix of opening it up and resetting the CPU and GPU units and cleaning out the whole interior, that lasted me 6 months till it YLOD'd again, then the next fix lasted 3 months, then I fixed it once more, but bought a slim instead of risking it again.

She still works, but has been packed away in a box because I know it will only last about a month or so this time.

Perhaps Everquest or Planetside for PS4. Maybe some JRPGS at TGS. I can't wait to see.

That would be massively exciting, only it's scary that all we've heard of it is that it's in development.

I'm sure there will be some more features ready for announcement by then, I'm skeptical about an Uncharted 4 being ready for launch but maybe soon after.

I'd personally like to see God of War V or Heavenly Sword 2 (There's not way Ascension took the WHOLE Santa Monica team those numerous years to make it) to help the launch. And for all we know they could announce a non-insomniac Resistance spinoff because of what Resistance 1 did for PS3.

Good point, all they haven't said really is price and what the box will look like. At his point I just wanna see some launch window games cuz with what's announced and what the ps3 will get I'll be set til next year. Maybe announce gow4 and uncharted 4 for the 2 halves of next year, ff15 as a vaoprware demo lol and who kknows. At this point it'd be hard for them to screw up.

Sony always has a plan B. And then a plan C and D. I'm just like that and its yet another reason why i am a Sony fan.

If people don't care about the blocked used games and always online feature then hopefully Sony has something that will make people come back to the ps4. In some ways though, i don't want the children over here. A lot of them are foul mouthed and rude. The children i hear on the ps3 are mainly polite or keep to themselves and their friends. We'll see though.

I'd like to see an exclusive Final Fantasy game for the PS4, done right, at E3, and yes I'm dreaming.

As for GT6, perhaps it'll be a PS3 game. If not launch, and with DriveClub, it'll be a long while till we see any GT PS4, so the soonest GT6 will arrive will have to be on the PS3. It's been since 2010, and I'm kinda in the mood for a new GT game. I'm hoping this year, and not next year or after. Obviously it would have to be on the PS3 if that's to happen.

The combination of the Driveclub announcement and Sony's Rep mentioning GT6 PS3 just shuts down all hopes of early GT6 PS4 launch window release, so in that case, I'd like to see it on PS3. That will settle me for the next 2 years at least, and by then GT PS4 will probably be near-ready or just… ready.

I expect "all of the above":
– New features. We've definitely not seen it all.
– New games. Both exclusives and multiplats. They got at least one bomb to drop at E3.
– New hardware. Peripherals. Something fun, maybe even impressive.

This E3 will be historical.

of course they are, its E3!

unlikely but im still hoping to see some sort of new device.
the pulse controller thats been rumored would be cool, or that recent patent $ony filed regarding a device which can heat or cool depending on your heart rate.
something different, something that changes the way we control our games.
its time we take these buttons away, move away from our cave man roots!
no seriously its ridiculous how freaking long we have been using basically the same input the first computers used!
perfect example theres so much voice recognition software out there that actually works REALLY well!
but how many companies use it?
it makes writing up emails, putting notes on accounts, SO much faster!
yet no one uses it.
why?
why have we become so slow, and so stubborn in our old habits?

im hoping for some more details into the system, maybe go into more detail into the gaikai service especially how BC with ps1,2, and hopefully 3 games will work.
maybe a all new feature which has not been announced, maybe something along the lines of a low power pause mode like what the psp go had.
id be so cool if you could put your system in standby so the drive is not running, disc is not spinning, the systems in standby but power to the memory retains so your last gaming session is preserved so when you come back and turn the controller back on boom your back to where you left.
FAR too many times ive turned my system off, to have to redo half a hour of what i did the following night because the game has really poorly designed checkpoints!

not to say some new games are not needed, the obligatory crash bandicoot, syphon filter, you know all the mascot games people want revived, would be nice.
but thats never going to happen, so…….

I think E3 announcement will be release date and pricing info. I also think Sony might try to stress Vita/PS4 integration to have more Vita sales. Perhaps another game or two, there may be some developers that can't announce upcoming games until both next gen systems have made their debut?

It's a given Sony will have big news about the PS4 at E3. Showing the console will be big, and I'm certain we will get some big time game reveals as well. I wouldn't mind seeing a true system selling game like UC4 announced but I highly doubt it would be a launch title. GT6 would be system seller too but I have zero confidence in Polyphony Digital's ability to deliver a game on time for anything. If they targeted GT6 for the PS4's launch they would miss it by miles.

Back to true system sellers. Kill Zone Shadow Fall is probably the only true system seller and that's a borderline call as well. KZ2 sold 2.86 million copies while KZ3 sold 2.44 million. 2.86 million is pretty good for KZ2 when you factor in the PS3's install base when it released. but it's by no means spectacular when compared to the sales other FPS games like Halo, BF3, and CoD have received. KZ3 selling less than KZ2 is a little discouraging but at least I can come with tangible reasons for the decline in sales. KZ3 isn't rated as highly as KZ2, and some KZ fans were turned off by the change in controls.

Still, it's very wise from a strategic point of view to have the popular FPS genre covered at launch. At the very least GG's titles have always looked spectacular so I expect the new Kill Zone game to really show what the PS4 can do. Will it look so good that gamers will run out and buy a PS4 at launch just to play it? Yes, I think it will sell some PS4s.

The Infamous series is a real headscratcher to me. Infamous sold 2.55 million copies which is great for a new IP when the PS3's install base was still pretty low. But Infamous 2 only sold 1.47 million copies when the PS3's install base was much higher. Both infamous and infamous 2 have nearly identical Metacritic scores so it's odd the sequel sold so much less. Infamous 2 released in June against very little competition so release date isn't the problem.

The only explanation I can come up with is fan backlash from Suckerpunch's attempt to change Cole's character design. To SP's credit they changed Cole back to the original Cole for the most part…they did change voice actors however. Could it be gamers punished Suckerpunch for even attempting a Cole redesign much like Ninja Theory was punished for changing Dante's appearence in DMC? Outside of poor marketing that's as good as explanation as any I suppose.

Even if there isn't a proven system seller in the PS4's launch line up like Halo, or Uncharted it already looks like the best launch line up Sony has ever had. Maybe there won't be one particular game to point to that sells the PS4 but the overall line up will.

I am just thrilled that the PS4 is off to such a great start. Most of the coverage regarding the PS4 has been positive and even more importantly gamers have reacted well to what they are hearing about the PS4. The NY press event was great and it really showed Sony has learned a lot of from their mistakes this generation. I think they are dead serious about regaining their market leading position and they did a great job at restoring some of the lost enthusiasm surrounding the Playstation brand. It was very wise to have the Playstation meeting in NA. That was definitely a calculated move on Sony's part. Yes, NA is Microsoft territory but that's exactly why Sony needed to target it.

It's important to remember that Sony dominated NA for two consecutive generations before the PS3. That's something no other console maker has ever done. The NES was a runaway hit here in NA but the SNES and Sega GENESIS split the NA market almost 50/50. My point is gamers here in NA are pretty fickle and will jump ship in a heartbeat if a console maker makes a serious mistake or if they see value in the competition. This console cycle proves that. We have seen one console maker go from worst to first and another do the exact opposite.

The only thing I am worried about is advertising. Advertising has not been one of Sony's strengths this generation and I think it has really hurt some of Sony's lower teir exclusives like Infamous, Twisted Metal, and Star Hawk. I sincerely hope SONY is prepared to compete with MS when it comes to advertising. MS spent 500 million marketing KINECT which got them 24 million units sold. Coincidently that's how many original Xboxs were sold last gen. That proves what a well funded marketing campign can do. No way was it Kinect's games driving most of those sales. Just Dance series is very popular but that's about it.

I cringe when I think about how much Xbox advertising I will be forced to endure during the next Xbox launch. If they are willing to spend 500 million marketing an add on like Kinect then the sky is the limit when it comes to marketing their next actual console.

I think Sony knows they can't just sit back and let MS bombard all forms of media with advertising and control the message. That was probably a big factor when it came Sony announcing first. This has been a very long console cycle. Both gamers and the industry as a whole are starving for information on next gen systems. Sony was able to directly tap into that hunger by announcing first. Basically it was free advertising for SONY. Definitely well played by Sony. MS was caught off guard and they really underestimated gamers desire for next gen systems.

"It's important to remember that Sony dominated NA for two consecutive generations before the PS3. That's something no other console maker has ever done."

I guess you're not counting Nintendo, since Genesis provided some stiff competition, at least for a few years? Fair enough.

What I think is important to remember is Sony made some serious strategic missteps with PS3 — the all-in-one box that had a little TOO much in it resulted in an outrageous launch price; the Cell engine was a nightmare for thrid party development; etc. I think that had much more to do with Microsoft's ascension in North America much more than anything Microsoft actually did. Sony is in for a fight with Microsoft for the upcoming generation, but they are hardly invincible. If Sony gets its own house in order — so far, it's loooking that they have — they can absolutely capture far more market share this time around.

@telly

I should have phrased it better. I know the SNES went on to beat the Genesis. but they were neck and neck for most of that console cycle in NA. Sega moved onto the Saturn while the SNES continued to sell. Even with my poor phrasing I would point out I used the word dominated. The PS1 outsold all its competitors combined. No competitor even game close to touching it. Sony was even more dominant with the PS2.

So I would say my statement that Sony is the only console maker to dominate two consecutive generations holds up. You are correct to point out Nintendo won two consecutive generations as well. The NES dominated its gen and the SNES went on to eventually win its gen after a very tough battle with Sega. Was the SNES dominant like the NES, PS1 and PS2? Most definitely not.

Your third paragraph is spot on. Sony essentially gifted Microsoft their position in this gen's market early on in this console cycle. You are absolutely right. It wasn't really anything MS did to take away Sony's marketshare. No way does MS gain so much marketshare at Sony's expense without the misteps you mentioned. I actually think you are being too kind when you describe the issues Sony faced earlier this gen as misteps. It's more like the PS3 fell flat on its face at launch.

To be fair MS did have a more robust online network when PSN launched. Xbox Live was superior to PSN early on and still is to some degree mainly because it has cross game chat. Apparently that's a big issue to some online gamers and they are willing to pay a premium for it. The quality of Xbox Live played a big role when it comes to the 360's popularity here in NA.

It took some time but Sony also has a robust online network now. PSN has tons of content. I am a proud Playstation Plus member and I love their instant game collection. Vanquish was on there last month. That game rocks!! I got infamous 2, Little Big Planet 1, LBP 2, and all the PS1 Resident Evil games free for being a PS Plus member. I also got The Cave, Plants vs Zombies and Costume Quest. Too many great FREE games to list actually.

It's great because Sony keeps adding free games each month and it gives you a chance to sample games you wouldn't go out and actually buy. Those free games are yours to play forever as long as you keep your PS Plus membership paid up.

I do give credit to Sony for turning the PS3 around. A lot of heads rolled over at Sony(MR "get two jobs if you want a PS3" Ken Kutaragi was removed from his CEO position) but eventually they righted the ship. I liked Temjins's analogy. He said Sony saved the ship from sinking but there is still smoke billowing out of certain quarters of the ship. Great analogy to which I will add you can tell the ship has suffered some damage but most of it appears to have been the result of self inflicted friendly fire. I don't think MS scored many direct hits on the PS3….they just happened to be in the right place at the right time when the passengers started to abandon Sony's ship.

I agree that no console maker is invincible. This gen proved that for sure. Yes, Sony will have a fight on their hands but I love the positive reaction Sony is getting with the PS4. It sounds like Sony is going out of their way to make sure they don't make the same mistakes again. I like the developer friendly approach. It looks like we can kiss inferior multiplats goodbye forever.

Don't forget about Sony's aresenal of great first party developers. They definitely have an advantage over MS when it comes to first party developers. Will that be enough to counter MS's advantage here in NA? Will it be enough to overcome MS's advantage when it comes advertising and paying for exclusive third party content? Too soon to tell but that's what makes console launches so exciting. 🙂

Again, I am thrilled with everything I have heard about the PS4. Sony announcing first was a great move on their part. Like I said this has been a very long console cycle and gamers are starving for information on the next gen systems. Sony's Playstation meeting received intense coverage from the press and gaming media. It really put the PS4 in the spotlight. I know a lot of gamers wanted to see the console itself but that's okay. It just builds up more excitement for E3.

I think we'll definitely see a big system seller at E3 that will be available at launch, or at least the "launch window" (before March 31 of next year). The biggest Sony franchises at the moment are probably God of War and Uncharted. I find it very unlikely, if not impossible, that Sony Santa Monica has been simultaneously, silently prepping another God of War game for PS4 AT LAUNCH considering they just wrapped and released Ascension a few weeks ago. Ready at Dawn has been awfully quiet, but I suspect they are using their spectacular portable bona fides to make a Vita GoW.

Naughty Dog has been busy with The Last of Us, but I am under the impression they have the bandwidth to handle two projects simultaneously. My money is on Uncharted 4 launching with PS4. We shall see.
