You've all been waiting for it and here it is.

As expected, Naughty Dog revealed the first gameplay footage of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End at the PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas today.

The video spans a good 15 minutes and starts with protagonist Nathan Drake standing on a cliff overlooking a stormy sea. Gameplay segments include exploring a dense jungle (apparently in search of some mysterious pirate treasure), and we also get a peek at the new rope and grappling hook. Heck, that's an implement Drake should've been using all along! At the end, we're introduced to Drake's brother, so that's an interesting new character.

It's awfully pretty, too…

We were wrong, Drake's brother dies, not him.
Really thought this reveal was missing that big set piece event, and/or Sulley, Chloe, or Elena.

It's a surprise.

I'd say the lack of a setpiece is a good thing. Sony and Naughty Dog went way too heavy on their promotion of the big moments of UC3, leaving surprisingly little to wow players in the finished product. If they're toning down that sort of promotion this time around, it'll be a very good thing.

I agree wholeheartedly Lawless SXE!
Same for UC2, saw all the big sets before playing the game 🙁

I love the new hook and the I was really impressed with the enemy Ai, how persistent they were in looking and not being limited to a cliff edge to leap over and scout further. I wasn't blown away by what I saw but I was certainly content and I know it's going to be such a fun game.

hate to say it but I can't say I'm impressed. but the faces do look great.

I suck. I know. Maybe this is just real early footage or something but I got bored watching this…

oh, and adding the wall slide…
when a game has to resort to sliding down something on your back as a new feature it means it's cursed.

=p

You probably got bored watching it because of the tempo and pacing they were playing it at. I mean they were trying to show off the game not play it like you or I would.

I agree. The game looked great, but despite the new combat features and grappling hook, I've seen Drake climb up stuff and take out bad guys in his four other games. Show something that's going to make me go "wow"… and a release date.

@danny

That is dumb. You can say the same thing about every other game. I've seen Mario jump and stomp on goombas, show me something else. Seriously?!? They show better AI, climbing mechanics, a more "open" environment. Everyone is always a whiner no matter what. I heard the same whining with the new zelda as well. Entitled people, seriously.

Don't get me wrong, I'm consistent, I do call out other games that just seem to repeat themselves with each new entry. It seems to be a trend in this business and I guess I'm just disappointed that Uncharted, one of my favorite franchises, seems to be following in that same path. (Of course, that's just my opinion. That's all this is.) And I wouldn't say I'm whining, I know I don't have to play it if I don't want to. There's plenty of other games to look forward to in wonderful 2015. 🙂

That looks so awesome! Watching it isn't as satisfying as playing, I'm sure, but picturing myself having to react to that kind of luring menace is great stuff!

Imagine the kind of shape you'd have to be in to pull off stuff like that. I wouldn't ever arm wrestle that guy! Haha

Nothing can top Bloodborne. The boss fight with the npc who turned into a werewolf?!

Kidding of course. Uncharted looks as good as ever. The detail in the environment is incredible. Nolan North and Troy Baker as brothers eh? Sounds about right. I also like the new climbing animations. They look so much more vibrant and realistic.

The ai and environment interactions are so much better. Haven't seen good AI in awhile and so far I am very impressed by this. The machine gun is no longer attached to his back and floating in midair! I am glad they didn't go for big set pieces, I was blown away by the small little details in the game.

Which reminds me, I hope they don't attach set pieces to please the "fanboys". The boat scene in UC3, although fun and great looking, was not needed in the context of the story. This seems like a smaller and personal story, I like it.

Yes! The rifle sling is a nice touch that was much needed. Always seemed goofy to me that the rifle just stuck to his back like Cloud's buster sword. Haha

There's a lot of dynamics going on that most of the people watching this trailer won't understand until they have the controller in their hands. This is a really really impressive technical achievement by ND.

That foliage though…

Looks amazing, looks fun. It's ND at their best from what I just saw. I'm not sure I've ever witnessed a game where the game play looks like you would be watching a cut scene. Brilliant development right there. Can't wait.

There is a ton of stuff that caught my eye that is newly implemented to the series and I can't wait to get the controller in my hands while the game is running.

The combat looks fantastic and a lot of fun to engage in. Another thing I noticed was although we all know this is a linear, story driven game. The landscape was all one big playground. It appeared to be more open and more usable terrain. Something as a fan of the series I'll enjoy a lot especially with the platform elements.

I love the weight that you can see in the way that Nate moves when scaling the rocks and that. Makes it seem so much more real. And the new grappling hook looks sweet. Too bad it's purely contextual. On the other hand, the way that he finds and uses that climbing spike… I really hope there's more small, incidental stuff like that to be found.

Also the new ways to interact with enemies… that is so cool. I mean, this clearly isn't a revolution, but it seems as though ND is adding in a lot of small improvements, and I have no problem whatsoever with that idea.

Maybe within the Tomb Raiderish platform genre Big. Uncharted games are fantastic but they can feel too cinematic at times and the puzzles are pretty meh for the most part. The Last of Us is a better game in general in my opinion but the two aren't really the same. Ones focus is more on platforming while the other is survival. As far as combat and story telling, the Last of Us takes the crown. Especially when it comes to melee combat and stealth. We'll see if Uncharted 4 can meet or surpass the improvements brought to the 3rd person gerne by The Last of Us. So far it seems promising. 🙂

Well I did say arguably. 😉 and same goes for TLoU.

My personal feeling is that Uncharted 2 is the best game I've ever played. I think the story telling is better in it than any other game out there.

I love Uncharted, i really do. But I'm not going to lie, i was left a little underwhelmed. It's going to be amazing no doubt and it does look incredible but maybe my own expectations for it were just too high.

That early E3 teaser, assuming that was in-game looked abit better.

Still a day one buy but i wasn't utterly blown away like i expected to be.

bigrailer19

I wouldn't expect anyone to be "utterly blown away" by what they showed. If you think ND is going to reveal he whole game to you, your wrong. They learned their lesson with Uncharted 3. They blew everyone away with early reveals of gameplay (earlier than they should have been) then the game came out and although good and exciting it was what we seen. ND will surely keep a lot of things under wrap.

And one could argue this is their chance to really show it off. Well I'd argue against a lot of than kind of promotion. Look at Uncharted Drakes Fortune and Uncharted 2. Great games, less promotion, everyone was Uber excited before and after playing them.

What this was was their chance to show fans of the series the upgrades and new gameplay elements they added and show new fans what the game is about. I gotta say I know more people that either didn't play or only played the Uncharted series for 5 min. than I do those who played them all. The one thing in common with those people is they didn't realize what the game actually was. They thought it was some guy running around looking for a treasure. What ND did today was show what they really needed to in my opinion.

Yeah you're probably right, ND will most likely keep the big set piece moments under wraps which is fair enough.

I can remember though when Uncharted 2 was unveiled and what we saw was nothing short of staggering, with Drake caught on that train hanging over the cliff-side and that early gameplay footage with Drake and Chloe running across the Nepal rooftops from that chopper. That was an incredible moment to show off the gameplay and got everyone pumped for it. Imo it's just a shame ND didn't show a more action packed scene to reveal with Uncharted 4's first gameplay footage. Knowing Uncharted the game will be packed with big action scenes, surely showing off one wouldn't have hurt just to get that hype wheel really rolling. 😉

I dont like the fact that theres no release date. Uncharted 2 and 3 showed release date on december and released next holiday. Uncharted 4 might be a long way from completion

Idk about anyone else, but after the first 4 minutes (when Drake was in the cave, that is), I was enthralled! I love the new stealth tactics and the fun ways of finishing off an enemy with a melee attack–over a ledge, down a hill, or up against a wall. Otherwise, it appears to be classic Drake: the humour, the scrambling, and the climbing (with a few twists to the latter).

Looking good. It's hard to tell from the footage but I hope there is actually a button to crouch. This time around instead of forcing the stealth sequences like in past games they should let the player approach the situation the way they want like in The Last of Us. Those stealth sequences in previous Uncharted games were blagh.

i've seen some of this i will say i am quite impressed its ceratinly building upon the great ps3 visuals of unchartered 3 and making everything better and more polished and idk if i was the only one but it kinda reminded me a bit of AC4 which is a good thing i my mind cos that was a great game and very impressive visuals and gameplay and mechanics for the next gen launch, yeah i'd say i'm looking forward to this

happy gaming
