The PlayStation 4 has managed to garner plenty of praise, especially from developers.

And that's not only because Sony's new console offers accessible architecture; it's also because designers know Sony actually listened . Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford definitely appreciates that important effort, as evidenced by his recent PAX East panel talk.

After saying he's "really excited" about the PS4 and that he "always loves more power," Pitchford said that Sony listening to developers was key:

"They really invited us into the process and I can say definitively that they listened to what we had to say and made the platform better because they listened to the developers."

Most will agree that Sony did the right thing, especially because so many game makers complained about the prohibitive PS3 architecture right out of the gate. Undoubtedly, what developers most wanted from Sony this new generation was a system that didn't require years of learning and adaptation. As for the competition, Pitchford said he's not allowed to divulge any details but he's also excited there, too.

Yes, well, 2013 is bound to be an interesting year for everyone in the industry. And of course, gamers as well.

It will be interesting after all this PS4 love and hype to hear MS's plans for their new box.

Its sad that some developers are so into themselves they cant do anything differently. If the ps3 was so hard to work with then why are there amazing games like Uncharted? Laziness and entitlement is what's wrong (the fable guy, peter mono-something, is a perfect example).

The dust still hasn't settled from Aliens: Colonial Marines, Randy! Not the best time to promote yourself by hopping on the PS4 love train. Take a long, hard look at your business ethics and then we'll talk.

Actually, Gearbox is a pretty good developer. Aliens Colonial Marines was looking great until Randy decided to hand it to another developer while they focused on Borderlands 2.

I forget who the other developer was, but they pretty much threw out all the great stuff Gearbox had done up til then and created their own crappy version of it.

So really, if Gearbox is guilty of anything, it's trying to take on more than they can chew. When they focus on something, it generally turns out great, but anything on the side tends to come out unfinished or botched up (Duke Nukem Forever is another example of this)

It was a rare misfire but the dishonesty in promoting the thing has rather soured me on them as a developer.

Hopefully, we'll be able to have a gaming generation without excuses. Sony will probably have less of a headache by not having to dig through somebody's programming to find solutions to their problems.

No more excuses left for the devs. If we get the same amount of issues next gen as gamers did this gen I might start looking to see if the Playdiums or arcades are still around and invest in that. 🙂 They never disappointed, unless I could not get on the machine.
