I've known about this for a while but only now, with the embargo lifted, can I talk about it.

When critics received Dragon Age: Inquisition for review last week (thanks, BioWare!), they soon found that the game would frequently freeze.

And it wasn't one of those simple freezes; it was a full-on system crash that would force you to unplug the machine. It also put your save data at risk and apparently, some reviewers did lose that data.

Now, at the time, they explained that the recently released PlayStation 4 firmware update 2.00 was causing the problem. Until Sony fixed it, critics were asked to play the game with Wi-Fi turned off because that seemed to ease the freezing/crashing issue. Well, the good news is that Sony will release a new stability patch – update 2.02 – prior to Inquisition 's release next week, and that should fix things up.

For the record, I was even offered a loaner PS4 without update 2.00 in case I needed it to keep playing. I didn't take it, as I only encountered the freeze issue twice and I figured I could live with it long enough until Sony provided a fix. But I remember sending over the following caveat: "If this isn't fixed by the time the game launches, it'll have to be reflected in my review."

But that seems to be a moot point now. 🙂

Quite embarrassing that the problem was within Sonys own system software. At any rate it would not have been fair to blame BioWare for this.

But man is this game harvesting good review scores now. At one point this autumn I predicted a metascore at the upper-half of the 80's for Inquisition, and that seem to indeed be the case, with tons of 90+ reviews, praising BioWare for returing to their RPG roots.

As a BioWare fan I'm just so very very happy to read this. They're back!

Beamboom: Did I predict such an occurrence…not in so many words?

I may have. 😉

I believe you did too, Ben. It was one of the titles you asked if would break the 90s barrieer if I remember correctly, along with Unity I believe it was.

I also assumed a lower 80s score for Far Cry back then. Let's see how that goes. 🙂

Is everyone in this site going to ignore the atrocious PSN network? Doing something simple like sending a message to a friend is a nightmare. It takes for ever to send or receive messages. Also, this has nothing to do with Microsoft or Xbox One. You would think Sony would fix this issue on 2.00. 2.02 is out and yet no fix.

I've noticed it does take more time to send a message than usual but that's a small problem compared to the constant crashes and generic errors such as CE-34878-0 and CE-36329-3.

Yeah I don't get why a message goes up to 97% and makes you sit there. Sony needs to get on that.

I wonder if this fixes that dreaded CE-34878-0 error. Has anyone else gotten this or getting this? I was getting this error along with CE-36329-3 error constantly by simply launching games or scrolling through the PS4 menu. It's a general system crash. I had to have one PS4 replaced already due to this. The replacement is functioning a little better but I'm still getting these errors from time to time.

I'm starting to think you got 2 from a bad batch. However, The Evil Within and Murdered: Soul Suspect have caused a couple of those CE crashes for me so it could be some problem with communicating with software. Apparently it was so bad with Inquisition it just kills it hardcore. I hope someone is working on the general issue.

I'm glad it's fixed and I hope we don't run into anything else down the line, my PS4 doesn't like to update to my cloud so if a save gets killed it will die right then and there.

However, as with Fallout and Elder Scrolls I don't care cuz I WANT THE GAME!!!!

hahahaha Screw real life for awhile each day and on weekends!

I had that problem too until I turned off auto upload.

oh, we probably will get more firmware crap like this coming down the pipeline. My instructor at school tells us everyday that the average Computer Science employee doesn't really know what they're doing and the majority of all financial losses from hackers and generalized patches come from CS folk mistakes. He believes standards are inevitably going to have to increase. That software engineers will need medical-like licensing procedures to make it into the bigger companies. It's become that important.

only thing i saw so far after updating that my recent activities got reset. said i played destiny for the first time today but i have been playing since launch.

as for the messages, they used to break around 9pm pst every night. now its broken from the time i get up until i go to bed. it will break and not send and show messages at random times now. for a console they marketed to be more social, its message system is broken as hell. isnt messaging one of the easiest part? my damn ps3 along with the multiple things it can do the current gen can, has no problem with messages

Kudos to Bioware and Sony for being so Damn awesome! I get that people are distraught about the bugs coming out of the 2.00 update, but that puppy was HUGE! What really shines is Sony's response time of update releases.

I'm glad DA will not suffer at the hands of (as many) bugs, too. Definitely getting this for the PS4 once I get through… Yep. DARK SOULS 2! God, it's so addictive.

Wow that's a lot of system stability issues & bugs for a console that's been on the market a full year now… I never had any errors or stability issues early on with the PS3.

I don't know if it was that early on, but I remember at least one of the ps3's firmware updates turning a significant number of peoples' consoles into bricks.

good old $ony, can't release a single FW update without f*cking something up!
theres a reason why everyone in the IT industry says you never ask a hardware guy to do software, and vice versa.
