Can Call Of Duty Ever Really Disappear?

Analysts say the upcoming Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare won't halt the franchise's decline .

It'd be a mistake to think that even the biggest franchises can't die. Do we all remember Guitar Hero ?

However, while many like to point to that franchise as an example of a gigantic fad that eventually fell by the wayside, Call of Duty might be immune. It may have reached the exalted "can't ever kill" position occupied only by the likes of Mario , Madden , Halo , etc. Once a franchise has become ingrained, not just in gaming but also in popular culture, it seems highly unlikely that it'll ever really disappear. Sure, it might take a break for a while but for it to die out entirely ? I just don't see it happening.

And that brings up another question: Do we want it to happen? Love it or hate it, Call of Duty has done a lot for this industry. You can complain all you want that it desperately needs to innovate, and that no entry in this franchise will withstand the test of time. But when all is said and done, CoD was just plain huge for gaming. Do we want something with that much potential influence to disappear? Can we argue that it will always have a place in the industry, and that place is undeniably positive…at least to some extent?

i think cod will die eventually once a newer, fresher, do i dare say innovative fps comes out. i mean you cant argue guitar hero with a game like cod or anything else bc guitar hero was literally a fad of music that came and went fast, especially if the instruments broke and had to be replaced (thats where things can go down). cod has been around a long time so every year they "try something new" which entices new kids. i mean a lot of kids play cod over adults, i know adults play too but more kids than adults. i think AW will be better than ghosts as far as everything, but it wont beat whatever was before ghosts in terms of sales (i may be wrong here, but wasnt the cod before ghosts the biggest seller in franchise history?) ghosts was a huge let down in terms of everything lol. so AW def will top charts and they have kevin spacey to thank.

one thing i hate about cod and always have is the way kids are able to hack their accounts to be maxed out on prestige, or whatever it is that they do. once i hit prestige 1 or 2, im pretty much done w the game at that point.

Thing is – FPS is still the dominant genre and that isnt showing any sign of changing – a lot of people bought Destiny this year instead of COD.

Untill another modern military shooter comes along that offers something more fun to play COD will continue.

im not overly in love with the new scifi direction COD:AW has taken – but I would not be surprised if BlackOps 3 turned things around. Treyarch are definitely the premier studio in the COD universe.

ahh so the many millions of people who still buy it and enjoy it are mistaken then.

Good to know – if only you'd told us sooner.

No, not mistaken. They're just suffering from the dronality effect. They buy because it's cool to buy, and actually prefer lack of change because it's familiar to them.

It's the same reason people continue to buy a new Apple product each and every year.

"cool to buy" ???

Aye very good. Im in my forties. Most of the guys I play with are 40+. We buy it every year because we still thoroughly enjoy playing it (certainly familiarity helps when you get older). The day I buy a game because its "cool to buy" or just because everyone else is , feel free to have me executed.

i'll agree that Appleites are douchebags though.

I don't see it dying out completely but it's definitely not the same FPS that it once was. If only they made a remake with uncharted quality graphics (COD4) I can only dream 🙂

Personally I don't think so. There are TO many CoD stokers that will buy everything that has CoD name in it. Glad I couldn't care less.

yeah nah i'm over it personally i'll play with a friend if they want to play it but well i just think it brought in ideas like annualisation which we can all argue isn't really a great idea but i just don't htink its the best wide spread representation of gaming and for that reason i will respectfully disagree and leave it there

happy gaming

I don't think so. Activision seemed to have learned their lesson after running Guitar Hero and the Tony Hawk franchise into the ground (although I'm still not sure how long they can keep Skylanders going), and so they're basically measuring out CoD year after year, offering new reasons to come back and not going too far in trying to ram it down people's throats. As long as they keep up the current pace, they could keep selling it.

Besides which, as you say, it's a title ingrained in gaming culture, whether people like it or not. Just like Grand Theft Auto, or even Assassin's Creed these days, there is a widespread awareness about CoD that, I think, just won't ever let it truly die, or even slide into unprofitability.

Not my cup of tea, but that's just the way it is.

I don't see why people are slamming against this CoD so hard… as someone who has never cared for the series, I actually think this one looks pretty neat. It's being far more creative with it's futuristic themes and presentation of Warfare to the point where it is almost a Sci-Fi shooter… which I am actually interested in. This could even be the first CoD I actually buy. The premise seems very promising indeed, I just hope the gameplay can deliver. I get the impression it will leave a bigger impact than Ghosts last year.

When life ends & the world eventually freezes over the only things that will be left in the barren wasteland are cockroaches & Call of Duty.

This & Assassins Creed will still be going even when i am bed prone, being shower bathed & urinating myself in a nursing home with wrinkles, crust & greys sprouting from my ears.

The series imo needs to either bring some form of innovation or refreshing ideas to the table or just die off. It's beyond ridiculous really that they can continue to spew this up every year with as little difference to last years addition as possible & slap the same price tag on it while gimps continue to flock to the same slop in their drones like their is nothing else available on the shelf.

I ain't ever buying a CoD game again (haven't bought one since Modern Warfare released in 07, which admittedly was brilliant) unless they completely overhaul the series & give us some originality other than a different subtitle.

I always wonder – what innovation and originality can be placed to a mindless shooter like CoD? You want stat points and gear/armor collection to have RPG-like feel?:) CoD will and always be a straight as a bat shooter. You walk forward, listen to some completly non-important story conversations and shoot everything that moves.
You played one CoD -> you played them all.
But 7 years ago it was fun because it was new.
Now it's not.
It will die the same way as Assassins Creed, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Battlefield and wahtever series that drags forever. you name it.

As long as they maintain the relative prodution quality of their time, I don't see why anyone would want them to go away.

I see COD as a well produced pop artist. I don't listen to pop music myself, but don't mind hearing a well polished track or two while on the road. And I most definitely don't want pop music "dead".

Anytime there is a COD article, most of the comment I see resort to bashing it. Why even read the article if it ain't your cup of tea? I get it…you hate it…but the millions who buy it every year speak to how fun the series still is.

I look at it like this…it serves a purpose. Its fun as hell to group up with friends and slaughter the competition and talk trash in the process. Gaining prestige allows for bragging right and there is no denying that even though the game play stays the same and is relatively easy, the basic function and premise is to be a fun pick up and play game! Even more so if your friends are good at the game and has good conversation.

Even if every entry feels like DLC with new guns, locations and a quirk here or there (like the exo suit), im still gonna buy COD if the gameplay looks fun. Hell, its the multiplayer that most who buy the game plays anyway. I think most who bash this series either don't play shooters often or don't play with a full team and they suck. If you win at anything, there is more enjoyment, pure and simple.

I still play every genre out there with the exception of RTS games, so you can't call me a "hipster" or twitch gamer. And I don't agree that most people only buy it because its "the cool thing to do". The game just so happens to be fun! You don't like it, then why bother commenting and saying the game sucks? Just because its the same game doesn't mean its a bad game…

I'd also like to add that even though I don't like assassin's creed and haven't played one since ac3 (trying to force myself to enjoy it) you don't see me commenting about how boring and repetitive I find it to be on every thread. Thats because while it just ain't fun for me, I can't overlook how beloved the franchise is and the production quality.

Seriously looking at all the hype for this sh**, Treyarch is the better developer.

I've thought for a long time that the game serves up too perfect a cocktail of what mass audiences want to fade away or burn out any time soon: first person, excellent graphics, easy to pick up, military power fantasy, just the right balance of realism and Tom Clancy-esque speculative military fiction, etc. It's definitely for me, but it's little wonder why it's as huge as it is, and hard to imagine it going anywhere.

I'm not a fan of CoD at all. I honestly find it boring as hell. But it's not going anywhere. It's been around too long and has too big of a fan base. Yeah there's a new CoD out every year but you know what you're getting when you buy it.

If you wanna play CoD then play it. It's bringing attention to the industry. I'd rather have CoD bring attention than the "gamergate" bs. And when it comes out I know it'll take all the annoying teens away from any of the online games I play lol.

CoD is like the Drake of video games; appeals to the casuals and masses while the "hardcore" fans get it but can't stand it and says it sucks.

Thumbs up for the Hip-Hop reference! I don't like Drake much myself…im a kendrick Lamar fan.
