What Do You Expect From The Final Fantasy XV Demo?

Square Enix plans to release a playable demo for Final Fantasy XV in March. As you might expect, this has prompted plenty of discussion and argument.

So, what do you expect from this sample? Do you anticipate emerging depressed and encouraged?

Don't forget we're talking about a game that has been in the works for over 8 years, and this includes a complete overhaul and retooling for a new generation. The director changed and many say the underlying theme and style changed, too. At this point, based on the footage we've seen thus far, it's hard to say what to expect. To me, it looks like a standard hack 'n slash game with hit points thrown in. I imagine your characters will advance and progress as well, but it's the core gameplay mechanic that worries me most.

The bottom line is that this needs to be a role-playing game. As such, the focus really shouldn't be on action. Then it just becomes an action game with RPG elements. Now, a true RPG with action elements – essentially, an action/RPG – is fine. It's not what I want but at least it still qualifies as role-playing. If it doesn't, it won't matter how flashy it is, I just won't care. How about you?

I'm kind of expecting to see some cool things but ultimately finish it not being impressed, unimpressed, or at all certain what it will say about the final game. I think it's a fig leaf to put out there like Ground Zeroes.

I hope it somehow blows me away but without a series of things happening with the battle system then it will get boring quickly. Like with XIII, there was actually a lot of stuff happening behind the fact that all you had to do was press up, down, and X, but it never came to light. This game will have to make those extra bits of depth something you can feel and work around and shift toward personalization.

I don't understand people that defend XIII's gameplay. It was so incredibly bad. It was like a big stinky piece of $hit wrapped up in the most beautiful wrapping paper.

SE showed they didn't learn much with XIII-2 and that Lightning Returns BS.

This game isn't going to be that pokemon style crap where you take turns attacking and have that whole menu thing in battle right?

FFX was the last time (and one of the only times) you saw anything without an ATB in a FF, soulja. It's not only (confirmed) not going to happen this time, but it's unlikely we'll have anything without a minimum of an ATB ever again.

So… yeah, no. Sounds like you can button mash to your little heart's content! If you're lucky, you won't even be required to think half the time outside the highest of difficulty settings!

LV: XIII-2 was much better, gameplay-wise. They fixed a lot of the bigger flaws and it was much deeper.

XIII was RPG Lite and I think we all know it but at least in terms of combat – within that structure, which is still inferior to XII – XIII-2 was a step in the right direction.

Lightning Returns, on the other hand…was a joke.

oh wonderful, because actually controlling your character during a battle and deciding when to use items WHILE actually controlling your character must not take any thinking at all, well hey if you want to spend time thinking and have a challenge pokemon's still there for you.

I can't believe I am the only one who found XIII's combat system to be ever so engaging. For the majority of the game I was kept on my toes with each battle as you had to keep aware of your Paradigms. I mean in prior FF's It's usually just a matter of being aware of the enemies one weak point and abusing it.While in XIII I had to switch paradigms multiple times in battle to depending on the enemies attack pattern. I've never said it's without faults (GAME OVER as the lead character dies) but I still found XIII to have one of the most engaging JRPG battle systems I have played in a game. I really wish they put 'Auto-Battle' off… as that is what the majority of complaints are about – I never used it personally as I found choosing my commands was a batter way to utilize all the points of the ATB bar. I've beaten the game at least 3 times now and I still regard it as one for the best PS3 experiences I have had.

Lightning Returns was a bad game overall, but am I the only one who thought the battles were fun? I mean just considering them in a vacuum?

I generally enjoyed the combat, I didn't care much for playing dress-ups with Lightning though. However I absolutely loved one of the biggest side-quests of the game which I will refer as the 'Last One' to avoid spoilers. But it was such an interesting concept and I really enjoyed it.

Soulja, have you played anything like Kingdom Hearts, for example? It's like that, supposedly.

Kingdom Hearts was tricky, and you had to be ingenuitive and skilled at the highest difficulty. But everything beneath that setting, you could button mash your way to victory. (or power-level then button mash) Even if you once-in-a-blue-moon decide to use an item.

And no, I find item use in action games is typically because you reach an "oh shit" moment, and not because you've had to employ some sort of strategy. So no, I don't find it requires much thinking.

@Underdog, I disagree about being able to button mash through the Kingdom hearts games. Even on normal KH1 had a pretty challenging end boss, KH2 was most button mash friendly and I actually liked it less than the first game.

However in Proud mode you could not button mash and beat sephiroth, who was the games main hidden and hardest boss, in both games.

Even the main story line was pretty challenging when I played it. This is providing you play blind.

All that said there are ways to cheese the game if you play with the systems, in KH1 with the right build you could make yourself invincible, but people always figure those things out in final fantasy games, regardless of the style of combat. FF7 and 8 you could make really easy, 12 as well.

Yeah, Proud mode is what I meant by the highest difficulty. I had forgotten what they called it.

I expect to get an absolute idea on what the battle gameplay is and whether or not I will like it (I won't). I expect the visuals to be amazing as well as the music. I expect to be disappointed but know full well I'll be buying the game on Day1.

I'm thinking with the level of completeness the battle gameplay could still change between now and 8 years from now when it's done.

I actually think the gameplay looks great if it's like Kingdom Hearts'. Not a classic FF atb style gameplay but it's definitely better than FFXIII or any auto-battle.

I expect to see lots of grey leather drabness with big swords. I expect to see a bunch of Billy Idol misfits and no pretty cools girls on the team.

Yeah, wtf is up with no girls in the party? I prefer to play as a girl whenever it's possible. I'm waiting for a special trailer to come out with Bieber playing in the background.

There are major female characters they have been briefly shown through images just don't think we have seen them in any of the trailers or gameplay.

All we have right now is the prince and essentially his close group of bros.

To be honest, I am not looking forward to it because there's so much to play (and do) from now to March that I probably won't play the demo until April or May. When I do play it and if I don't feel the goosebumps that I feel when I play FF8,9 or 10 then I won't be buying it. It doesn't have to be an old game to give the same type of goosebumps, certain franchises are able to bring that out in you. It can be an action RPG but it must feel like a Final Fantasy game first and foremost.

I have not played an FF game for more than half a decade now that I truly don't miss it. I am fine with playing other titles such as Dark Souls and Shin Megami Tensei/Persona when I want to dive into an RPG experience.

The next games I am looking forward to is:

November – Far Cry, February – Bloodborne & The Witch 3, March/April – MGS5.

Add graduate school to that equation and I will be a very busy man.

I'm expecting a lot of people to sigh and moan and wring their hands and say that it's exactly what they expected from a spin-off title, but not a mainline FF game. I expect high quality, an action-based battle system with the leans towards the heavier, more realistic qualities of The Witcher and the Souls series, rather than pure speed and style such as Devil May Cry, or God of War. I also expect an immense amount of spectacle, both in the game and on forums as some fans launch into tirades and others call them idiots and it turns into an enormous firestorm.

I expect to be entertained by the reaction to the demo…

Why do people keep calling this a spin-off? It's Final Fantasy XV, an official entry in the series. Versus XIII would've been a spin-off, to be sure, but it's obviously not that way anymore.

xenris

People keep calling it a spin off because the core design concepts of the entire game were based off of Versus 13 which was well a spin off.

While it has the name 15 and I don't think its wrong for a main number entry in the final fantasy series to have more action based combat, some people might. So people are trying to explain why the combat in 15 is so very different than 13 and 13-2 which were closer to turn based systems, which is because it was ORIGINALLY a spin off.

Lawless SXE

No idea why people call it a spin-off any more, but xenris summed up where the sentiment springs from. Just to be clear, I wasn't referring to it as one, as it clearly isn't.

Nothing possitive.

Removing Nomura was the final straw for me. People flipped their shiz when ND had Amy henning leave and the other 2 dude, but the top big dogs of FFXV project up and quit Square Enix, dudes who've been there since forever? No one bats an eye.

I see this as massively negative, yet I still can't help but hope itll turn out to be good. Shame for the demo however I will be completely skipping it because A: Bloodborne, B: Bloodborne, C: Bloodborne, and finally D: The Order 1886.

I'm expecting a game that plays like Kingdom Hearts and Parasite eve, but has a darker feel to the whole thing.

I want a big world to explore, side quests to do, mini games to discover and hidden bosses to defeat, but I'm not going to expect that and risk being let down.

I will buy this day one because its the reason I got a PS3 and partially a PS4, and I am hoping we are all hit with a gem that no one was expecting.

I blame the geostigma scare.

You do have to commend Tifa for wearing that outfit even to the Northern Crater. That's commitment.

Simple for me. When I played Kingdom Hearts, I fell in love with the gameplay. Back then I wondered what it would be like if a FF game would have gameplay like it. Combat and everything was real time. I'm expecting FFXV to evolve Kingdom Hearts gameplay with even deeper set of moves and and upgradeable abilities and magic… All of this while enjoying the FF universe I grew to love, consisting of world map, chocobos, airships, summonings, beasting magics, special moves, and a story where young folks save the world… and crystals, all in real time.

Now for the demo specifically, Im expecting good things with the gameplay. Unless it's worst than kingdom hearts gameplay, there's no way I won't like it. Plus teleportation is just bada** imo.

No more killtubes! FFXIII gave me diarrhea, and it was most heinous!
Why is it so hard for them to make a game like FFVII, and game everyone and their mother wants a HD remake for? I mean really, ugh…ah! AHH!!

It's going to play like Kingdom Hearts. I thought by TGS's trailer that they removed the menu commands but if you watched the engine demonstration where they fought the Behemoth the menus were back again. I cannot see the series ever going back to turn based combat. But that does not bother me so much. Xenoblade Chronicles & The Last Story both had fast action combat systems and they still had the JRPG feel to them.

When it comes to JRPG's the main thing I want is an adventure and the road trip style that they presented in the TGS trailer really brought that out much more than any trailer we have seen before. I mean if I see something I don't like about the Final Fantasy series I am the first to criticize, but I honestly have not seen anything yet that has mad me discouraged. I look forward to playing the demo as they said it could be up for 3-4 hours, which will be a quite a preview for me to see what I think of it.
