Rumor: PS4 Shipments Start In August, To Hit 16 Million

Two big questions remain for the PlayStation 4: How much, and when?

Both details should get confirmed at E3 in June, but we may have a hint as to "when."

According to DigiTimes citing "sources from PS4 component makers," Sony wants this year's shipments to reach 16 million, and those mass shipments should begin in August. It seems the new console will be manufactured by Foxconn Electronics and Pegatron Technology, and the end result should be the machine on store shelves for the "year-end holidays." That's when Sony said the PS4 would show up, so that fits. But it's the 16 million part that's the most important in our estimation.

Recently, we published an article asking if Sony had learned something from the PS3 launch debacle . One of the biggest issues with that launch was the appallingly low number of units made available on launch day and indeed, for that holiday season in 2006. But with 16 million units available for the PS4's debut this holiday season…well, that's pretty encouraging.

By the way, to date, Sony has shipped over 100 million PlayStations, 150 million PS2s, and 77 million PS3s.

Well I'm glad there won't be a big shortage, now can someone at Foxconn and Pagatron and Megatron and Decepticon come forward and leak the specs on the hard drive? I want a terabyte damnit!

Only if Prime allows it.

@World,

One terabyte will simply not be enough. Anywhwere from 3-5 terabytes is more likely what will be necessary because games are only going to get bigger over the coming years.

My 500 gigabyte hdd is almost 100% stuffed currently, and PS Plus games keep getting thrown at me at least twice per month.

What we need to see happen with hdds is the 2.5" laptop hdds should get phased out, and the 3.5" desktop hdds should be used instead.

Western Digital is providing us with a solution later this year, just in time for the PS4. Their new 3.5" hdd will be 5 terabytes.

No word on the cost yet.

Good news indeed, and if the price is right, Sony could do very well the 2013 holiday season.

correction, the shipment for the PARTS is in august, not the console itself!
leads hope that there will be a worldwide launch, i cant see $ony reserving 16M consoles just for JP and the US!
if they have that many available, they should distribute it worldwide!

I do hope their launch goes better this time around. I did not hop on the PS3 bandwagon till the 80 GB MGS4 bundle came out. I would love to buy a PS4, but my finances may not allow for it. Hopefully I can find a better job, or get more hours from my two current jobs!

No way are they going to have 16 million units ready and sold out to consumers or even retailers before the end of the year. They might have the parts for that many but there's no way they'll have that many out in stores and sold to people in such a short amount of time.
