So what will the PlayStation 4 look like when you turn it on? What sort of menus will you see on your TV screen?

Well, Sony has released a new set of screenshots showing off the PlayStation interface, so you can get a better idea of what to expect. It's quite fancy.

The pics display a broad range of features, including video sharing options, the previously announced social connections, and live streaming tools. There's even an example of a PS4 live-streaming via mobile, plus game-browsing with a tablet. The new PlayStation's robust set of features is indeed geared toward the overall social experience, whether it's multiplayer, social media, or different ways to interact with other gamers. For instance, the Share button on the new Dual Shock 4 controller is all about "sharing" PS4 experiences with your friends.

Now we just need to see the actual console, although we expect it may not show up until E3. That could be quite the show, by the way.

It has a Sony feel to it. But can kind of see that they got a little inspiration from the Xbox interface. I hope Sony allows for full customization. Too bad that just didn't make a super awesome updated version of the XMB. I actually really like the layout of XMB, but I am willing to give this a new try thought!! 🙂

That is smart of you actually. I will reserve judgement until the new Dual Shock is in my hands and I am personally navigating the PS4 menus.

Don't know if it's just me but it reminded me of Sony's version of the 360 UI…

To be honest, I wouldn't mind if they stick with the XMB.

Yes, and that received universal acclaim for it's massive improvement in usability…right? 😉

It did take a bit of getting use to & is a tad slow alright !
Im sure with its 8 gig of super duper ram this new ui will be lighting quick.
XMB was a stroke of genius,t'will be missed.

Ya it will be. Just look at the vitas menus. You can have a full featured game suspended and the menu is still silky smooth. THe ps4 will be no different (in terms of performance)

Reminds me of the current ps store as well and I still hate the new store. They have made improvements since it's release, but it still sucks compared to the old store.

This interface for the ps4 had better work much better.

Don't like the look of this, XMB has elegance, this has tiles. It looks like someone thought that Windows 8 and surface would be a hit and decided to imitate it just enough to look like it…ok, it has a slight Sony veneer, but it still resembles the new PSStore crossed with surface and with a little bit of YouTube/Facebook thrown in for good measure.

Not really terribly impressed with this. Though I guess it fits with this massive new focus on making every individual feel more important and the center of the gaming world – at least from the point of view of their console.

People that dont like the PS4 seem to be the evil of the universe nowadays. I however agree with you.

Even Kos-Mos had happier emotions than you do. Im sure after Kevin died, Shion still didn't sound so… well like this. Lighten up man. Or don't either way works. Just miss it when you didn't sound like a drama queen.

TheHighlander

No drama queen, just cold, hard rationality – as befits KOS-MOS. KOS-MOS barely disguises her contempt for Kevin, and Shion is an emotional cripple all the way through Xenosaga – a handicap created entirely and exploited mercilessly by Kevin. If KOS-MOS could have, she'd have torn the man's eyes out by their root nerves and beat him senseless with the wet ends.

This looks very Windows 8'ish. And is clearly the same direction they went with the new PSN Storefront (which would be great if it wasn't so damn slow)

I would've been happy with an XMB upgrade. But obviously Sony wants to keep current, and this tiled UI style is becoming more and more popular. Sony wants PS4 to be accessible and familiar.

I agree with you. The problem with the PS Store is how slow it is. I actually like the way the interface is.

@maxpontiac,

Agreed. The store now isn't nearly as fast as it was in its previous incarnation.

I was just gonna say the same thing. I just bought a new PC today and am messing around with Win 8, as we speak. It is definitely similar to Win 8 and the PS store. I am sure that about everything we do will look like that for a few years.

I don't even understand what exactly it is I am looking at here? Clearly it must be somewhere deeper in the structure, I'd love to see how the main menu looks, the screen that greets you after you log on. This… doesn't tell much.

H8WL3R

Yes, I was thinking likewise. Where are the Settings Options (Display, Sound, Network, etc.) and no wallpaper? I too would like to see the very fist MAIN MENU,this can't be it. I'm preferring the XMB right about now, hopefully there's full or a very large degree of customization or the option of using the XMB (or closely modeled updated form of it). Added features, such as social ones are fine with me, as long as it's not literally thrown up in our faces. That's where I'm coming from right now. I'd like for whomever chooses to activate and deactivate whatever features are in the background, and also have shown what we prefer, and be able hide what we don't seen on the UI.

It does appear to be the "xmb". If you look theres xmb icons just up from the middle of the screen that represent the settings, friends, storr and 1 other I can't make out.

H8WL3R

Ah I see. I think I know of what icons you're referring to bigrailer19; the PSN Store, Friends and Settings ones eh? I must admit I had a harder time to spot them in that setup, they seem almost "tucked away" to me. Well while it may have to take some getting used to, let's hope there are customization features for the one's who'd like to use them.

H8WL3R
H8WL3R

Yeah, you already posted what the icons were, oops, sorry. Ha ha. The only other one I see is an "i" and a friend pic (avatar) and name, or is that the user pic (avatar) and name? Huh?

…. Like website nowadays the layout looks like it is on a tablet… I dont like it at all. The XMB was far more practical.

I like this a lot better than the PS3 XMB. This is more vibrant and reminds me that I am on a console that is new and updated. The PS4 is new and needs something a lot different than the current PS3 XMB. Well done, this looks next gen to me. Cannot wait to dissect the PS4. The excrutiating wait continues……….

This isnt next-gen its a mess. If you like this just log into the store, or check out live. Truly this isnt a Sony approach.

It's good you like it, and I'm genuinely glad you do. I find that the XMB seems better organized and I tend to find it easier to navigate in general, as I did the former PSN Store. Perhaps, they felt they had to change it, because of the added social features, maybe? Perhaps they just wanted a fresher and/or next gen look. Maybe they were even trying to have similar looks to other OS/UIs out there, because it's "in" and some actually prefer that. It's probably wise to remember though, that it isn't even out yet, so they may revise it or let us tweak things. I hope for us of us who don't prefer it though, but still want the PS4 in our bedrooms/living rooms, that we have… options to alter or change it altogether.

I know I'm using the word "options" a lot in many comments, but I happen to think that they are usually very important. I'm also in a more visible and textually vocal mood; I'd like to think people find it constructive and thought provoking. Hope so. 🙂

Sony are taking the Microsoft approach.

AND I REALLY DON'T LIKE IT!!!

And by it I mean the whole way they've presented the PS4 thus far. Please tell me you guys can see it too? There are 'Microsoft-isms' every where you look.

Lame. It looks like the PSstore and that will just frustrate me as navigation is a bi***. Keep it like the PS3 please.

It is a little unclear what we are looking at here. Hopefully this is just a screen of the extra content thay shows up under highlighted feautures in the xmb.

some people say the XMB is old and outdated i have another word for it. Perfect. i'd be totally fine with it on PS4. this looks to much like the sh**ty new PS store.

They need to do away with that blue color. It's generic.

Other than that, it looks nice. A bit too much like the PSN store though.

Customization should rule. I want to go to a friends home and see that the interface is completely different than mine. I also want to hide anything that I do not use. Less viewable selections mean I get right into what I want, when I want.

thats the PSN store not the interface.
they wont show the boot screen and XMB replacement till probably even after E3, normally the last thing they show.
i just hope they allow for allot more customization than they did with the ps3!
custom boots would be nice, im getting bored watching the same boot screen day in day out 7 days a week for 7+ years!

Question, if they integrate the PS Store and menu so that you're constantly being offered content based on what you do, would the interface not look just like the store with the exception (of course) of listing the things you already have without options to buy…?
