If you haven't sampled Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn , now's the time.

Square Enix has announced the launch of a two-week free trial period for its MMORPG, and it starts today. Visit the game's website for download instructions.

You can check out the online action for up to 14 days or until your character reaches level 20. The trial also limits the available in-game activities, but at least you get a good idea of what this shared-world adventure has to offer. Furthermore, Square Enix is kicking off a Recruit a Friend program, which gives players rewards if they invite others to sign up:

If the newly recruited player subscribes for 30 days, both parties get a Friendship Circle (increases experience gained by 20 percent when below Lv. 25). The recruiter will also nab an Aetheryte Pendulum (teleportation to the closest new adventurer on their Friends list for free). If the recruit signs up for 90 days, the recruiter will also receive a whistle that summons a draught chocobo, which can transport two characters.

Final Fantasy XIV 's initial launch was disastrous but Square Enix was committed to fixing the problem. It took well over a year but when A Realm Reborn launched, critics found the experience to be much better. It is now available on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, if you're wondering.

Beamboom.

I'm lookin' at you.

If anyone is interested, send me a PSN message with your email. I can "recruit" you to try it free. If you decide you like it and stay for a bit, we both get a cool item that boosts exp before lvl 25 by 20%, as the article says.

I don't know. There's a couple different options. I pay $9.99 but I get a special rate as a thank-you for being an Alpha tester and former subscriber to the crap version before it.

I also didn't start paying anything until this past march… had it all free up until then. I didn't even have to buy the game since I had the original from 2011.

I'd probably just wander around in this massive world, checking out trees and castles…feeling bad about how I have nothing.

If we're on the same server, that is. :p

Malboro if you try it. Look up Fetch Kinsman (or my buddies "Merissa Rayne" or "Buddy Whasisname").

We'll hook you up.

Interesting. I would like to here what the PSX community has to say about this after a few days of it. The once top tier SquareSoft transformed and then ascended into absolute madness. Haven't much cared for what they have put out lately, so this might be a good way to check in.

It's free, you might as well.

I absolutely love it. The lore is true-blue FF lore. Story is… okay. Not great, but not awful. (especially for an MMO) The gameplay is both quick and strategic (especially end game fights). You can spend a lot of time playing with people or on your own. Downside: no voice chat. My friends and I use google hangouts. Others use teamspeak, vent, etc. etc.

I wish they would do this for console versions too. I have friends that want to try the game but don't have a PC that can handle it.

Great game and definitely worth checking out during the free-trial period.

What are you talking about? You can do this for the console versions… both PS3 and PS4. Both along with PC play on the same servers, too.

I think with "this" he mean a free trial. It seems it's for PC only.

Picked it up last week after my interest waned for DC Universe Online and I haven't looked back. This game is awesome fun!

This games was great while I played it. But I play so many other games I just dont have time any more to play a mmo like FF 14.

Since I have a Wii U now, I went back and bought Xenoblade for the Wii and am playing it until Destiny comes out. I have yet to even open Tales of Xillia yet and I have had that since it came out lol.
