If it succeeded, we all knew it would become Ubisoft's newest franchise.
The game sold 4 million copies in its first week, so they're pleased with how the recently released Watch Dogs has performed. As senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key told GameSpot :
"Creating a new franchise like that is the hardest thing to do in our industry because there's so much risk involved. We're incredibly happy with the sales of the game and the experiences that the people are having. So it's a franchise. It goes into the franchise barn and now we figure out what to do next. It's something that we can build on now."
Ubisoft also intends to produce a movie based on the game, which is no surprise, as most of their franchises are seeking a film adaptation at this point. Ubisoft Motion Pictures is already working on the "Watch Dogs" movie and fans have called for Tom Cruise to play the role of protagonist Aiden Pearce. That probably won't happen but hey, you never know.
As for the actual game sequel, Key wouldn't confirm that it will definitely happen, but if a new effort is in the works, the team will "have to come up with something innovative and entertaining." That's the only way for the brand to "grow." For my part, I'll be interested to see where Watch Dogs goes from here…
