Destiny Will Have To Sell Over 15 Million Just To Break Even

So, how much do you think Activision will invest in Destiny ?

Would you guess a half a billion dollars? Because that's how much the publisher plans to pump into Bungie's new product, as Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently revealed during a Milken conference (as cited by Reuters ).

That $500 million will cover development costs as well as marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties and "other costs." In comparison, Take-Two spent just over half that much – $260 million – on Grand Theft Auto V . However, Destiny is supposed to be around for a long time; in fact, they plan to continue to update it for a decade, and an Activision rep said:

"Over the long term, we expect the ultimate product costs to be roughly in line with other AAA titles."

It's also worth noting that GTAV generated over $1 billion in revenue in only three days and ultimately shipped nearly 33 million copies. But regardless, with that $500 million estimate, analysts believe Destiny will have to move between 15 and 16 million copies just to break even. For a new IP? …really? Well, it's not impossible, as Bungie has Halo cred and the game has a silly amount of hype.

Besides, it's a shooter. The last few Battlefield installments have sold between 12 and 14 million, so why not?

Support for decade? That's not bad. If it's still notable thing a few years down the road instead of being overshadowed by a sequel then it might be worth it's investment.

Maybe I should make a few more PSN friends first before I consider it.

The whole 10 year thing isn't exactly explained very well.

But the idea seems to be that Destiny will be around for 10 years, at least. There is no doubt that we will see sequels in the mean time. DLC and tech support as well.

From the gameplay videos I've seen, outside of more crazy weapons at your disposal, it doesn't look that much better than Warframe. I'm not a super fan of Warframe, so no I'm not being bias.

Imo, it needs to wow me as a Warframe player if this thing is going to succeed, and so far I'm not seeing it.

Also, do they mean selling 15 million at retail price? I don't see how they can keep it at $60 for a decade. If the price declines, then they'll need to sell even more.

Yikes. I'm interested in this game but does anyone think this looks THAT good? Boy, for those who have wished a horrible fate on Activision, be careful what you wish for…

Activision better not count on me to buy it. The release date price can be $20 and I'm not interested. I want something mesmerizing and enchanting,

Tired of FPS (unless we talk Far Cry 4).

Activision are hoping to make Destiny into a ten-year franchise, not support the first game for a decade. Just wanted to clarify that.

I get that they're making an investment in the future with Destiny–"you have to spend money to make money"–but that is a seriously stupid amount of cash to pump into a single title. It gets me thinking that the folks at Activision realise that CoD is on a downwards slide, so they're trying to make Destiny into their cash cow replacement. I don't think it's possible for this first iteration of Destiny to sell 15 million copies, but later ones, if the first one is REALLY good, Activision and Bungie can keep the franchise in the public consciousness with a rigorous release schedule, I'd consider it plausible. But then, even Assassin's Creed, one of the biggest franchises of the current generation, hasn't had a single game hit that figure.

Well, it's Acti's money to do with what they please.

15 million units? yeah.. not seeing it.. plus, even though there is a single player mode, Bugie was kind of rude about how they explained it. there is one,. but you'll be having less fun if you play solo" in other words not my cup of tea. i like single player games and I should be able to have as much fun playing on my own.. if your curious, i got that info from this article
