The anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive Driveclub will release with two versions:

There will be the free PlayStation Plus version and the full-priced edition. Details have been a little fuzzy concerning the differences between them, and one user stated on the PlayStation Blog that the Plus version sounds "almost as if it's a demo."

He isn't the first gamer to express that concern, either. Has the Plus edition been scaled back over time…? CVG then reached out to game director Paul Rustchynsky, who replied as follows:

"The PlayStation Plus Edition hasn't changed. It's hardly a demo because you get access to all of the game's features online and offline."

He later told GameSpot that the Plus version is "feature-complete" although it will only have 10 cars, and you can only race in one country (which does give you access to 5 tracks with 11 distinct variants). Sure, it's a lesser experience; what do you expect?  …it's free .

Does it still sound like a demo to you?

Yes, fully featured. We get to try 10 cars and 5 tracks.

Yeah, it's free… sure. Last time I checked I paid for PS+.

It's like saying I get free online gaming for $60 per year.

"Free" rolls right off the keyboard rather than "Gamer subsidized surprise game selection"

That's just a free 2 play model.

It's not free to play. We are paying something every year as a subscription. That makes it worst than free to play.

It's not F2P because you're not actually paying for anything beyond the base which you get for free as part of a PS+ subscription.

And your comment, Ignitus, doesn't make much sense as you're implying that the PS+ subscription is wholly and solely for DriveClub, which is nonsense. PS+ subscribers are paying for dozens of games, cloud game saves, and the ability to play online.

It provides a service and your comments in this thread come across as one of those people who demands something for nothing.

That's why I said we are paying "something". Read carefully so you can understand. 😉

I did read that, but your comment still makes no sense. PS+ is a service that you willingly pay for, and Sony gives you free games as part of that service. You are not compelled to pay it, as is often the case in F2P games, so please explain how it is worse. There is no false advertising in what PS+ offers. I just don't understand your argument that it's worse the F2P when you're getting what you were told that you would be getting.

Temjin, yeah. The benefits of living in the city. I don't much like it here, though. Not enough greenery.

EDIT: Will do, man. 🙂

I'm pretty sure I heard there would be lots of DLC, as in an F2P game.

World,
If there is heaps of DLC, it still won't be a F2P model as that content will be also be available to those who purchased the retail version, so (unfortunately) it's just standard practice. This PS+ version is just a method of incentivisation to get people to buy the full game, which is then incentive for the DLC.

Okay, then we'll compromise and call it Shareware.

I pose the question to you then. How is the PS+ version of DriveClub a rip-off when it is exactly what people were told they'd get in the first place?

WorldEndsWithMe

I don't actually believe em when they say it's the exact same. We have no idea what they intended back then, they just said the whole game would be "free" like any Plus game. Now it seems they are altering that description to allow differences.

World,
No they didn't. They announced in June last year that DriveClub PS+ would have all of the features and mechanics of the full game, the car and track list would be limited. Sure, they didn't announce how many cars and tracks that meant, but there has been no fundamental change in their plans.

I love to play it. I dont think its a ripoff. You can't expect that a game with a lot of investments just give a away for free.

Maybe after you made some profit of it.

Expecting a new game like driveclub to come out and giving away for free is just silly

You are so wrong. I recommend trying some quality free 2 play games with a quality free 2 play model that is quite profitable.

Examples include:
DOTA 2
Rift
Tribes Ascend
Planetside 2

I could break down how they do it successfully, but it would be better for you to experience them for yourself instead of some talking head.

wheres the cut of line for what makes a demo, and what makes a full game?
i can see why people are calling this a glorified demo, just like MGSGZ, but i think thats going a bit too far.
as long as $ony does not treat these things as ok thats your free game for the timeframe, and have these as a separate category, id love to see more games like this.
stripped back versions for free, and offering a discount to buy the full version.
a good way to reward their loyal fans.

Why are other demos truly free to download but this requires a subscription to playstation plus?

Someone tell them that rather than "hardly a demo", it is exact definition of a demo.

Wow! You Playstation Pus subscribers are amazing. You're so humble. I mean, you don't want special treatment from Sony because of the $60 fee for a year of PS Plus.

You guys want Driveclub to be free for everyone even to those who doesn't subscribe to plus and you disapprove of Sony treating you special because they are offering you a taste for free and a discount of Driveclub especially for you subscribers.

And on behalf of those who are not PS Plus subscribers, we thank you, because you don't want to take advantage of Sony's special treatment to you for feeling bad of the $60 a year fee for PS PLUS. Thank you guys!
