I think I've stumbled upon a big reason why a lot of gamers get peeved when these high-def/next-gen upgrades arrive.

Maybe it's because they're covering up the fact that 2014 might not be the epic year many anticipated it would be.

We all talk about the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster , and now The Last Of Us: Remastered is stealing headlines left and right. Compare this with news of big-name games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt being pushed into 2015, and one starts to realize that upgraded versions of old games appear to be getting more attention than new upcoming titles. Is it merely because a lot of those upcoming titles are either a ways off or remain without a fixed launch date?

We don't know if games like Uncharted 4 or Driveclub will arrive this year, for instance (not convinced The Order: 1886 will release in 2014, either) although we hear the new Halo is on track. We'll also get the standard assortment of blockbuster third-party installments this holiday season; Call of Duty , Assassin's Creed , Batman , etc. But if you really look at the current 2014 release schedule, it's not overwhelmingly amazing. Maybe this is at least part of reason updated iterations of older games are getting so much recognition.

Just a theory.

The super HD games are nice to have in the mean time but it's kinda weird how this year is falling apart. It was bad enough the launch was weak but now the whole next year is looking lame too. Second Son really could have been a lot better too. Still lots to play though so I'm not complaining.

Honestly, they already started with the ps3 to ps4 "remastering" nonsense not even a year into the ps4s release, such bollocks.

No one's gonna spend their money on these remasters in 2 years when new releases are common.

Now's the time.

Sounds about right. It seems to me that it's taking the major companies longer to prep their new games than they initially anticipated, resulting in the apparent dearth of games.

There's still E3. Plus with the new Batman, COD, Evolve, The Evil Within, Dying Light, Destiny, The Crew, Driveclub, Wolfenstein, Alien Isolation, Assassin's Creed whatever and whatever great indies in between I don't see this as a particularly weak 2014. This is a lot of games. Seems to there's too emphasis on first party.

I agree, because I really don't see this as a weak year either for the same reason you just listed. Alien Isolation and Destiny are on my top list for this year.

What? A scarcity of games in the 12 month period post a new console launch? Shocking.

Sony's current AAA game release strategy for PS4 in 2014 – Release 2 of them at the fiscal year end in march 2014 then make people wait till June to watch Videos of games at E3 then make people wait for two or more games at the end of the year starting in October.

SO April,May,June,July,August,September wasted – 6 months of the year.

and why do game publishers release a game at the end of the month?for example Watch Dogs on May 27th and The evil within october 26th.
It seems like you're waiting for that month but you're actually waiting for the next month.

Only Diablo 3 for the PS4 can save us! Woooo!!!!

Uh… I think Diablo 3 would be considered a part of the problem. It's an upgrade of a port, which actually kinda makes it worse than TLoU: Remastered and its ilk.

ethird1

It also has tons of NEW FEATURES plus the new expansion to it. TLOU is a joke of a port. Lawless, you are failing as a gamer!!!

TLoU: Remastered has the new expansion (Left Behind) to it, too… Can't disagree with you on the last part, though. Don't play as much I used to; not a fan of those games that feature co-op as a cornerstone. Please, ethird, tell me how to not fail so hard at being a gamer.

And to cap it off, I can't even troll well. What kind of gamer am I?

Actually Lawless I disagree with you on this.

If anything, Diablo 3 console port was MEANT to be for next-gen consoles. The PS3 and 360 versions of the game are huge downgrades from the PC version. The PS4 version is able to match max PC settings.

I view the PS3 version as a "while you wait for the complete PS4 version" kind of thing.

This year will be graced with a new BioWare adventure. What else do we need, really.

Kind regards, the blatantly obvious BioWare fanboy (and proud of it).

Pfft. Damn fanboys. Don't you know that Bethesda is, like, a bajillion times better than Bioware. Your opinion is invalid.

exactly why people whine about these HD remakes.
if you had a massive influx of new AAA games then fine, but we dont.
so why are we spending time and resources tarting up old games when those resources could be spent on giving us things we actually need!

HD Remasters are not the threat, it is the 'indie scene'. I already talked about that in great length a few days ago but I still believe the quantity of sudden indie games on the consoles is concerning, even more apparent considering how bare 2014 is of professionally developed titles. In 2013 we had an explosion of amazing games, it seemed there was a top tier title being released every month, so that is part the reason were in this gaming drought, the other of course being the transition period between current & next gen console.

The indies are the growing developers for top studios of tomorrow. Programming/design experience has got to start somewhere – it's really quite hard. Otherwise computers still be ruled by grey bearded old people born of logic & math.

I surely hope people don't think of me as this threat when I attempt to bring out my first beloved projects.

//I get what you mean though. There's so many that it's annoying because they all seem the same and short-lengthed. Barely any are ambitious full journeys with at the least inventive music and narratives. What can ya do?

Vivi_Gamer

I have no problem with the product themselves and young people want to breach the industry getting together to work on a project for their portfolio if you will. My problem lies with the ratio of interest, the boom in the indie market is having strong ramifications to professional gaming industry. How we're getting a new generation of consoles with nothing notable but indie titles through out the year.

But it is not just the PS4/Xbox One which are going through a crisis of quality control. Look at the recent overload of movie streaming 'Apps' on consoles, it was an interesting concept when Netflix brought out the system to consumers but within the last year we've seen an overload of companies tapping into the market – Heck even Tesco (UK Supermarket competitor with Wallmart) Has there own streaming service now. Or take Amazon's recent 'FireTV' or GAME's (A UK retail store equal to GameStop) very own 'Ouya' console. We're just seeing companies latch onto such a diverse range of products and there is a huge problem to this. If you still have Netflix you'll have noticed that the quality of movies has dropped dramatically, this is due to all these other streaming providers taking honey from the pot and the more streaming providers we get the loss in quality for each provider will increase.

It just seems that ever since people have been profiting through online business there have been so many problems. My fear is that in 10 years time we wont have as many professionally developed consoles and the gaming drought we see this year will be normal in where we get 5-10 big game through out the year because companies can make more profit on a fad like FlappyBird – Which arguably rips artistic license from Mario… but amateurs taking copy righted content is a whole other issue itself.

Oh yeah true true. It's because that big guy at Sony is really pushing for small devs. He's REALLY PUSHING. Seems to be doing his job exceptionally well. I remember hearing him on E3 and it felt like something to be believed in.

Unfortunately there's no moderation so far and looks even worse when the slew of indies is combined with rare top-tier productions (which would have otherwise felt normal last gen I'm sure).

Don't believe problem lies in mobile apps/games though. They've always been at the top and rising. I know a small part is because developmental platforms are becoming more and more accessible. Computer scientists are getting smarter and smarter so they develop more solutions and models for businesses. More resources and knowledge are being shared by more people. When there's a trend or breakthrough in computing or money ideas, we'll just want MORE 🙂

Wait, what the HELL?! GAME has their own Ouya? Didn't GAME recently go through bankruptcy? GAME was in Australia as well, but it has now closed doors and is no longer here lol.

What a total fail from them.

But yeah, the other thing that we have all noticed lately is that a LOT of AAA talent in the game development industry is leaving AAA studios and either creating, or moving to smaller indie studios to work on smaller titles.

OK, so, the FFX/X-2 remaster is fine because it gives us a version of the game we never got to play in North America back then. It brings us something new. The rest of these remasters are bullcrap. They bring nothing new to the experience except a little bit of clarity to the visuals (DMC, GOW). Sony should have released their Dev kit ALOT earlier to Dev studios. They should have also put in an order of at least 15 PS4 only games for launch. These port overs (COD Ghosts, BF4, ect.) are just a way of stalling for time. The PS4 sucks OUTLOUD!!! in my opinion. Game sharing is stupid on PS4, Internet browser suks, no was to import your movies or music onto the system (which is a slap in the face from sony as more people than I can count wanted mp3 playback during gameplay. All sony did was put turn that into a way to push subs for the god awful music unlimited. Everything except the gaming power of the RS4 (RestrictStation 4) sucks. Even the system options are rediculous). The PS3 was all about giving the gamers the freedom to do what they wished, even installing ubuntu. Now the gaming line up is mediocre at best. I will stick with my PS3 and when they are no longer making games for PS3, I am done with gaming.

The FFX hd remaster is okay because it is from 2 generations ago. It was like 10 years ago or more.

TLoU released last year. Beyond Two Souls released last year. Tomb Raider released last year.

That doesn't matter to me. 10 yrs, 15 yrs, whatever as long as it's not just an upgrade to graphics I'm all for it. Heck, I'm really enjoying Castle of Illusion and that game came out like 24 years ago. But this PS3 version brings something new. If TLoU for PS4 brings new lvs and whatnot, then good for them. If not, then Naughty Dog is becoming part of the problem just porting with Ultra gfx. It's usless and those who are buying into this Remaster stuff is a sucker. Even the Star Wars Remasters had new scenes… Think about that one.

The remakes seem to be popular with audiences and this is a great time of year to release them so that they dont compete with other big titles. The delays do suck though…

My biggest problem with these HD remakes is that they are taking away time and resources that could be spent on creating new games.

I mean, now we are hearing rumors about a Beyond: Two Souls PS4 remake. If that happens I will be really dissapointed, Quantic Dream should be working on that new game!
