This is exactly the kind of game we need.

It isn't just because it's using the "outdated" turn-based mechanic. Well, it's partly because of that, but it's mostly due to the game's charming, lighthearted quality.

In an industry that has consistently become grittier, harsher, more brutal, and more realistic with every passing day, we sometimes forget the childlike innocence of yesteryear. I'm not saying I never wanted the industry to grow up (because I did), and I'm not saying I don't play big blockbuster games like Assassin's Creed and Grand Theft Auto (because I do).

What I'm saying is that in life, balance is everything. We need to balance out such epic, mature experiences with other virtual experiences; adventures that touch our minds and hearts. Just looking at Ubisoft's upcoming Child of Light eases my stress. It relaxes me. I imagine it's going to be one hell of a therapeutic product when it arrives later this month, and I'm betting it'll be soothing for others as well. It's just nice to step off the incessant roller-coaster every now and then, you know?

For those of you unfamiliar, check out our preview . We've also arranged a little video vignette:

My problem is the 2D areas don't interest me at all.

My problem is that it is geared towards children in an artsy fartsy way. Now, use this same style for some Viking or warrior rpg setting, and not some silly little girl in her pajamas, and we got ourselves a deal.

ethird,
You should look into Valiant Hearts: The Great War. It's being built on the same engine and is about a group of people that come together during WWI. But that's an adventure game, not an RPG or action game so…

ethird, was your father abusive, or was your mother emotionally unavailable? Both?

My answer to underdog 15 is … my mother was a ninja assassin and my father was bomb throwing, eye lazer shooting, cyborg whom both died fighting fat lazy liberal space pigs who tried to force me to eat healthy foods in high school so I would be a healthy treat to them later on.

The pigs from space failed miserably. For I am here to educate you noobs and the wonder twins who run this place on video games! raawwrr!

Sadly gonna pass on this. Love the artwork, but don't care much for the game itself.

It looks like a fairly large game for a downloadable title. I wonder how long it will take to finish?

Anyways, I'm still hurtin' for turn based, and it looks gorgeous. Love the soundtrack, too.

I so want to be hyped for this as it's an RPG and the FF traditional artist's work is inside — but I am not feeling it!

Oh, I actually didn't even realize this was on PS4 as well, I only noticed it from steam and was pretty interested, haha.

I like that the art is professionally executed. I'm fine with 2D games still existing, without needing all of the high quality, and expensive, CG graphics, but I want quality asset creation at the least (which Child of Light provides). I look at these other 2D games, largely indie titles, where sure, it's low budget and 2D but for heaven sakes the art quality in something like Mercenary Kings or TowerFall Ascension just looks like amateurish crap. Yet, that doesn't seem to matter much to some.

yeah you know i completely agree it's nice to have something a lil childish and simple and charming and fun to kick back into for awhile. i am glad we haven't forgotten where we've come from in this industry 20 years ago this is where we started moreless so thats gud atleast for my generation from the 90's
happy gaming =)

Hm… did maturity suddenly die on this website? Ouch…

I, for one, am plenty excited for this here game. Not only does it appeal to me, but I think my daughter and wife will enjoy it too – well, at least my daughter. Just can't seem to get my wife to come around to turn-based battles. She doesn't mind level-grinding in ARPG fare like Amalur or even Dungeon Siege, but she just can't come around to the classic system (which is too unfortunate for me). But I digress… Yes, excited for this one.
