Sometimes, it's all in the interpretation.

Xbox Achievements posted an excerpt of an interview with Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning, and the article was entitled, "Performance Gap Between Xbox One and PS4 Will Disappear."

As you might expect, that got plenty of attention around the Internet. But to clarify those statements, WorldsFactory asked Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray about Lanning's comments. Were they misconstrued? Apparently so:

"Actually that is NOT what he said. I spoke to Lorne afterwards and what he meant when speaking to that guy was that budgets, schedules and perceivable differences would narrow, NOT that the Xbox One performance is improving to align with PS4, that is just physically impossible. The PS4 has MORE COMPUTE units, and faster memory and a whole bunch of things, that would make that physically impossible to happen."

That's a whole different thing, isn't it? I find it mildly amusing that Xbox-oriented sites are desperately trying to find praise for the Xbox One…praise that, thus far in the generation, is kinda sparse.

I was just reading about on neogaf. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Anyway, everybody there was saying the same thing Gilray was saying.

Only thing that makes sense to me is perceivable difference. I don't understand the whole budget and schedule thing.

But yes, physically it's impossible now for Xbox One to upgrade their hardware for it to be inline with the PS4. That would create an uproar to those who bought the launch version. Only thing MS can do now is forking up extra cash to make multiplatform games run similarly. Maybe that's what he means by budget and perceivable difference lol. jk

Phil Spencer must have written that excerpt… or maybe Larry "Major 'Switch Flipper' Nelson" Hryb.

Yeah, that's exactly what that article was at Xbox Achievements. See, real journalists try to discover what was ACTUALLY said.

Whoa, I thought consoles were for gaming, not looking all pretty for the users. I'm not saying that graphics don't matter, of course they do. But when you say the Playstation or the Xbox has better graphics than the other, it should only come up when the different was like the Wii to the WiiU. Thats a problem. That is something they NEED to fix. (And get rid of that gamepad. :P) Just really, do we have to always compare this and that?

They're competing consoles… so yeah… there will always be comparisons.

As for me, if I'm an early adopter, with the early news on the difference in specs and abilities, I would be concerned about what each system is capable of 5 years from now when exclusives really matter. And if I can only afford or justify purchasing 1 system…

then yes. I do need to compare, and the choice, at this point, must be PS4.

yeah praise for the ps4 not so hard to find but for the xb1 not so much hard to find.

as for the perfarmance and costs i do see the performance gap staying as it or increasing slightly but the cost i wud expect the to come down at some point hopefully sooner rather than later yay know.

happy gaming =)

So, with the 'perceivable differences' comment, is he implying that developers will be able to optimise their code more for the X1, or just that because of the gap they won't bother to seek the same level of optimisation for the PS4?

Not really a fan of the new Xbox One experience – that stupid kinnect camera is so annoying – I have a UK accent living in Canada so the damn thing doesn't understand me. Also – I created the wife an account for zumba – so when she walks into the room while im trying to play Titanfall (I agree she shouldnt be allowed near the rec room when im gaming) it recognizes her and pops up a hello message – #$## off xbox. I have ordered the privacy cover for the camera.
