More PS4 news and once again, it's bound to get people talking.

The hot rumor is that Sony will announce the new PlayStation console on February 20, as most all of you know. Now, industry analyst Michael Pachter says it's a guarantee that the unveiling will indeed occur on that date.

According to The Japan Times , Pachter said he is "100% certain" that Sony will announce the PlayStation 4 at the press event scheduled for February 20 at 6 p.m. EST. Furthermore, Pachter says the console will "put a lot more characters on the screen and allow for hyper-realistic games." The machine might be capable of rendering games at 240 frames per second and of course, the PS3 will continue to be manufactured after the PS4 hits store shelves. Pretty sure it'd be financial suicide if they didn't.

So are you pumped for this announcement? Do you think Sony will totally blow you away? Be sure to vote in our weekly poll…

Pachter is guessing wrong because he assumes that the PS4 will be 4x more powerful than the PS3. And therefore, games could run at 240fps. That's where that comes from.

However, he's not factoring in that on the PS4, games will need to load more data than on current gen systems. And will not render the relatively "low" graphics that we have now. So his logic is flawed.

But I think most gamers understand that anything coming from Pacther has to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Bonampack, Sony could use a frame doubler to output 240 frames epr second while only rendering 120interlaced (for example). Basically, Patcher is probably wrong, and the only way I can see them pushing that many frames per second is to use a video processor like something from their TV line to output more frames than are being rendered.

Has anyone ever heard of "refresh rate", 120hz, 240hz? Yeah that's how it would work.

Yup, I can turn on/off motionflow on my tv so I can get a 120hz refresh rate. It's like im getting higher fps.

OFTEN wrong…not 100% wrong. You can't take price cuts into account because analysts will say they're imminent every month for up to 6 mos. or so before it actually happens and pretend they were right. Even the weirdos saying the end of the world is coming will EVENTUALLY be right. 😉

If what he means is literally frames per second, my guess was for the ability to play 4 player split screen at a solid 60fps for each player. It wouldn't necessarily be used for a single screen, and figured it's something they can split its resource such as for solid 3D/4k playback and split screen gaming.

What's pretty clear though is I think we can at least be confident with the ability to finally play games at a true 1080p/60fps.

That's all I care about. If you haven't seen what true 60fps is, check this out:

I think I'm finally mentally prepared for the PS4. Not sure I'll purchase it day-one, unless of course it matched three criteria: 1. The price is right. 2. Backwards Compatible. 3. Excellent launch titles. The PS3 still has some life in it, but if the PS4 is backwards-compatible, that will help a lot with the transition.

You can toss #2 out the window unless they have some super-mega SKU that also has the Cell in it and costs more.

Seems like nowadays everyone wants a super-mega-high-end machine with all the perks, bells and whistles for the price of a happy meal. I'd say if Sony releases a PS4 with bc, It'll have a price tag of at least $400.

In my dream of dreams, Sony will announce the PS4 with an MSRP of $349.99, and lower games back to $49.99 due to the ease of development for the system.

Just imagine Microsoft's (and Nintendo's!) reaction if Sony did such a thing, they would be left speechless.:o

I'm sure it'll go for $399.99 minimum, I just hope they leave the price of the games alone, they are high enough.

Sony would have to go back to releasing games on DVD if you want them to lower the prices.

Do you really think games will be sold for less if developers were to meet the PS4 high-tech specs?

Besides, Sony's shareholders, retailers and game companies would probably have a say with the whole price thing.

If its true that the blu-ray discs will hold 3X the data as current blu-ray discs (which would put it over a whopping 150gigs), it wouldn't help with lowering the price of games either.

I'm afraid how much games are going to cost in the future, damn gaming is expensive.

i'm pretty sure 240fps is 180fps too much as the human eye cant pick up anything beyond 60fps but well…….yay.

Patcher is wrong. It will output at 240 fps (perhaps) but probably only render 60fps. They'll use a video processor like the ones in decent HDTVs to do 'motionflow' or whatever you want to call it so five a smoother appearance to moving images without actually rendering that many frames.

I'm guessing you never played a PC game on a 120hz monitor.

So eyes can detect higher hz but not fps?

I have not played a pc with 120hz refresh rate, but I HAVE on my tv 🙂

Refresh rate and fps is pretty much the same, when you watch a video or a movie that was done at 24fps on a 120hz tv with whatever tech your tv has on, you will see "smoother" motion. To me it looks like its fast forward at normal speed. If that makes sense.

My wife's Ps3 is hooked up to a 44-inch LED with 120 & motion processing. It makes the images look ridiculously crisp when in motion. It's not perfect, really high speed stuff defeats it, but for most of the time it smooths things out and makes them look more solid, more real. If Sony adds that kind of processing to the video output of their next console allowing them to take advantage of all screens with 120Hz or better refresh, it will enhance the look of future PlayStation products enormously.

I hope Patcher is 100% right on this one.

I'm probably the one around here who for the longest time has been ready for a generation shift, plus I am really enthusiastic about what little we do know so far.

So yeah, bring it on, Sony! Get on the ball, and SCORE! 🙂

I'm excited too, Beamboom. PS3 has been a terrific system and there are still quite a few fantastic games on the horizon for it, but I'm so intrigued by what we may be playing in the next gen. Feb. 20 is going to be awesome.

Patchter….I don't listen to. However, I am eagerly awaiting confirmed news from Sony! If Pachter is right which I am almost certain he isn't. The "Omni" will be a beast. If Sony can make this happen and release ahead or at the same time as Microsoft it will be game over. With Sony's love for gamers and their incredible exclusives there will be more and more new customers coming over to the Playstation brand. Anyone believe Sony will go with Omni instead of PS4?

Not necessarily game over, but it would be trouble for M$ for sure, specifically if they hold out any longer. The fact that this event will be in New York, makes it clear for me that Sony wants to take the US market by storm, as they lacked a big deal of to M$ and the X360 in the generation.

Ditching the numeric PlayStation name in favor of some wooly BS name like Orbis would – IMHO – be a needless, pointless and stupid move by Sony.

I wouldn't be surprised if they took a cue from Apple and simply called PS4 "The New PlayStation," "The Next PlayStation," or something like that. And the box would just be a souped up PlayStation logo. Name doesn't mean a ton to me, I just wonder if they will try to rebrand in an effort to appeal to new customers.

Yeah, I am hoping for PS4 myself. Just read a article about Omni and I just cannot believe it. There are some cool pics out there though. A couple of them are really attractive for the new PS4.

@Beamboom

I have heard that Orbis is the code name for a while now. I just recently heard that Sony may call the PS4 RTM Omni. I hope not, but do a Google of Playstation Omni, images and you will see some cool stuff. I really like the controller and console pictures in the upper left hand corner of the image search.
