Might the PlayStation 4 be announced as early as February 20? Could it happen?

Although that may seem awfully early to some industry insiders, it seems feasible: Sony Computer Entertainment may rock the world with the unveiling of the next PlayStation in only three weeks time.

The company Tweeted a link to a special event with a teaser saying, "See the future." Evidence compiled from around the Internet seems to point toward a PS4 reveal before E3 in June, but few expected to see the announcement this month. You can check out the teaser trailer below but fair warning, it doesn't tell you much. We just know that on February 20 at 6 p.m. EST, Sony is going to reveal something…and if it warrants this sort of hype, maybe it really is the PS4. Cross your fingers!

Im hoping PS4 is announced so I can finally see what next gen will be offering. Im curious to see how they will handle backward compatibility because I don't like how the issue is handled on Vita. Im really hoping there will be strong 3rd party support at launch. Though I know its not likely I would love to see a epic jrpg at release.

This was probably just a teaser for the teaser

Hmmm… a reveal of the new controller? That would be funny.

This would be funny if Sony is just doing a sit-rep op in order to get M$ to show their own Durango's hand first, & that way Sony can quickly make any better upgrades &/or additional adjustments to the PS4's real launch.

Either way, Sony has already trolled M$ to me. After a statement saying they were willing to let the competition announce it first, then to only say "Psyche, just kidding" is in my eyes, a troll move, making them think they'd have all the time in the world, when in fact Sony has been ready to attack and leave them in the dust… with confidence.

Maybe it is the Gaikai unveiling.

Hmmm… seems early to announce, but you never know. They have been making all sorts of noises that made us think they are waiting. MS has problems with Durango, if Sony could announce PS4 now, they would take double advantage by stealing the limelight now, and putting the fire to MS' feet.

Still, it seems early to announce it. Could it be a SEN/PSN/PlayStation Plus announcement? Perhaps something to do with their partnering with Gaikai?

The term future means long term, so it can't be anything related to the PS3 or current technology. Gaikai is a good guess since it's certainly a plan for the long term, but this teaser seem like an unveiling, and we know Gaikai has already been known. Something already known like Gaikai partnership isn't worthy enough of a teaser and an official event in my opinion.

WII U was first to show so…

But I think it is the PS4, and although we don't need it, I think it's coming. Odd though considering that many games this year are going to be key for Sony like The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, GTA V and Beyond.

If this is the PS4 does that hurt sales of these games because gamers will be saving for PS4?

We'll see. If it is, I'm not getting one for years. Even as a game designer, I'm content with my PS3 as a consumer for a while.

WiiU is *nothing* more than Nintendo catching up to PS3/360. It's absolutely not the fist system of the next console generation.

WorldEndsWithMe

kinda funny how it will be outdated for multiplats in less than a year.

daus26

Spec wise for the Wii-U, I definitely wouldn't say next gen either. 1080p HD and such is not next gen technology and has been around for awhile. However, I will say that their way of gaming with the tablet is something new and I'll acknowledge that. Whether or not that warrants next gen is subjective, but if the Wii U isn't next gen, then the Wii wasn't either. Like the Wii, it was simply just a new way of playing.

That said, since I consider the Wii a next generation console alongside the 360/PS3, I'm going to say that the Wii U is next gen. Only difference is this time, Nintendo came first so it may not seem like it. In the end, the Wii U is Nintendo's console to compete with Sony's and Microsoft's new consoles in the near future, so that's another fact that implies next generation. Just my perspective.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Daus, yes it's their console to compete with whatever Sony and MS come up with, but that does not make it next generation, it simply makes it Nintendo's attempt to catch up and be late to the HD gaming party. If you define the next generation as being what consoles are on sale, then perhaps you have a market, but here we are talking about the next generation, and the WiiU is already here. It's rather unremarkable even by the current generation of hardware, and truly is catch up to the 360/PS3. technologically it's marginally more up to date than 360/PS3, but in terms of computational power, the message I have seen from Devs is that at best it's a wash – ie about the same.

The tablet gaming aspect isn't valid in my opinion either because the WiiU controller is completely tethered to the main console, it can't operate on it's own in any meaningful way. If the controller was as powerful as say, a Nexus 7, iPad Mini or a VITA, then you might have an argument with that aspect, but it's not. It's an accessory screen to the main system, and an extremely bulky controller to boot.

WiiU is not next gen, it's contemporary gen.

daus26
daus26

Can't say I don't agree with you Highlander. By the way, it's good to see you again.

Like I said, I also don't agree that the specs of the Wii U are next gen either, nor was the Wii back then. I'm just looking at the perspective that the Big 3 in gaming, being Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, that the Wii U is the console that will be competing in the generation to come soon. In a sense, the Wii U is a next generation in "time" or should we just say it's just Nintendo's answer to next generation competition.

The fact that the Wii U being here already can't' simply imply that next generation hasn't started yet. If that's the case, you probably would say the same thing about the Wii, but of course you can't because it released a year after the Xbox 360. This time it's Microsoft/Sony to be a year late. If say the Wii U released in 2010 or something, which is years before Sony/Microsoft, then your argument about the next generation not starting with the Wii U's release would be more valid since it would be in the middle of the current generation of the 360/PS3.

I regarded the Wii as next gen back then, so I have to regard the Wii U as well.

You and I are on the same page basically. We're just looking at things from a different perspective.

Heck yes. I'm excited for it. With all my hopes of GT6 being a PS3 game, I'm pretty much convinced now that it's probably going to be a PS4 game. If Sony is to officially announce the PS4 before GT6's official announcement, then it's pretty much a given imo. It wouldn't make sense to announce the PS4, then announce GT6 for the PS3, lol.

Doesn't seem too early to me. There have been detailed leaks about the PS4 for months including the one that stated Sony would have an Apple style reveal in March. So it's about 8 days early.

I like this strategy instead of waiting until E3 where Sony would have to share the spotlight with Microsoft. Announcement in Feb to get the hype train rolling and then a full reveal at E3 which should be all about the games.

A lot of pressure on Sony to get this right. They need the PS4 to be a success right from the start. I just hope they are prepared to spend on advertising. I know they are in a tough spot financially but they can't just sit back while Microsoft bombards us with a Kinect level advertising campign. Didn't MS spend 500 million on Kinect's advertising campign? They'll probably spend even more on their next console.

teases of announcements of announcements, sigh when did this industry become one massive tease!?
i doubt this will be the announcement of ps4 though.
1 the link leads you to a US site, so obviously the event will be held in the states.
$ony wouldent do that, they would announce the system in japan like they did the vita.
2 see the future, its a hint to how games are going to be delivered in the future, not the future replacement of what we have now but even much further than that.
ill bet this is a tease for gaikai, not the ps4.

daus26
daus26

If it was a Gaikai event, I figured Sony would be more straightforward, and not draw a tease such as this. I'm pretty sure they're aware of all the rumors spreading around about the PS4, so a teaser like this is something they should know about the possibilities of a backlash if it's an announcement on anything other than the PS4. However, you do make a good point on the fact that this is a US event. Then again, the last time they had a "Playstation Meeting" was the announcement to the Vita right? Before that, it was the PS3.

why?
gaikai would be a big enough feature to have a tease like this, and while people will be disappointed its not ps4 they will still be really excited for it.
IGNs just confirmed it is a US event held in NY, i just cant see $ony announcing the successor to the ps3 in the territory where its selling by far the worst!

daus26
daus26

Don't you think that would be more the reason why they would hold the event in the U.S? To steal some spotlight away from Microsoft's biggest market? Also, a software or partnership isn't something worth of an official event in my opinion. I can't recall any partnership/feature/plan that had an exclusive event of its own without other things being talked about. E3 would be the best for that.

Again, look at the last two "PlayStation Meeting." Last time was in 2011 (Vita Announcement) and before that was 2005 (PS3).

From a business standpoint it would be stupid of them not to announce the PS4. I mean they've got investors and media. If it was just a gaikai announcement it would just be purely a media event. With no investors involved. The fact is investors are going to be there. So what do you think they'd have interest in? A new game distribution system? Doubtful. Very doubtful. Or new hardware the investors can get behind and make some money off of. Plus they'd be alienating a lot of future customers who might not appreciate it, and decide not to buy their next console. That's just my 2¢.

I'm hoping it's a Gaikai announcement over the PS4. It would be cool if it's coming to Sony TV's in addition to PS3 (hey they need something to generate more interest in their TV's (but I do realise that Gaikai has an agreement with Samsung on the tv front).

TheHighlander

Hmmm….

Sony's HDTVs – low price commodity TVs are killing their normal TVs; they need something extra to make their TVs attractive despite being more expensive than commodity sets from China/Korea.

Online services are leaping ahead in every sphere of entertainment. Sony bought Gaikai, but what have they done with them? PSN is a huge success and even prospered after the big Hack Attack. Home is financially viable, PSN was incorporated into SEN. In addition to this Sony has the SOE online gaming business and of course the new PS Mobile games.

Online services are a major aspect of business growth. Sony really hasn't done anything obvious with their GaiKai purchase.

Could Sony be dovetailing all it's online services together? Blending PSN, SEN, SOE, and everything that is GaiKai into a single online entertainment service from Sony. Certainly they could focus on user experience, social and casual gaming, music, video, social interaction, etc if they could bring all these things together. GaiKai might provide the basis for blending all of this together for Sony.

Well, it may be way off base, but it's possible. It's certainly a way to push more content to their smart TVs in a way that is exclusive to Sony TVs (and connected BluRay players) as well as Sony mobile devices such as Vita and phones. Sony needs something to make their products special compared to the commodity products. With PlayStation Network (think PS Plus and all of it's extras that depend on the subscription) and Home, they have already seen the power of a Sony specific online offering. Both PSN/PS+ and Home create a content subscription based lock-in that keeps consumers connected to Sony, and spending money with Sony.

Thinking about it, this might make more sense than a PS4 reveal.

daus26

Highlander, if Sony does reveal the PS4 in the 20th, they would definitely have a heck of a show at E3 if they are to save all of that, plus a lot of PS4 games.

Also, it just doesn't make sense to me for them to talk about future plans that may not apply to the PS3. This whole Gakai thing seems to be something related to the PS4, and it wouldn't make sense to talk about it, without mentioning the PS4. If it's something about a global service to all of Sony's devices, it doesn't fit to call it a "Playstation Meeting."

Simcoe
Simcoe

I have to realise that it is a "Playstation" announcement not a "Sony" announcement.

…unless they are re-branding/naming Gaikai under a Playstation moniker and bringing *that* playstation service to other Sony devices not just those that are part of Sony Computer Entertainment…but then I think it would be more of a "Sony" (parent) event rather a "Playstation" event.

Simplest solution is that it's just a PS4 announcement! lol

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Well, I figure GaiKai will be rebranded under PlayStation, SEN or SOE. Thing is, if they announce something like what I was saying, it's huge for PlayStation whether Vita, PS3 or PS4, so I think it could still happen. At this point though, I am still hoping it's not PS4 because that would possibly give MS a chance to react. They need no chances. Though with Surface pretty much falling flat on it's face for being too expensive and clunky, MS may have to regroup a little in general before Durango arrives since – if I remember correctly, Surface was something that they were gonna push down to the console too.

Sony announces the Evolution of PlayStation by introducing its Next Generation Console along side a highly evolved online Streaming Service. The service will Stream Games Movies and Music. Sony will eventually open up its entire library of games on the service. From PS1 to PS3 and beyond. A fully integrated Social Network that can be linked to any and all other Social Networks. Not to mention the new endeavor of Movie and Television networks through an online service to compete with Cable companies.

If Sony can pull all of these features and services together it will be THE complete package of Entertainment. An ONSLAUGHT that could challenge any existing service at this time. Itunes, Facebook XBLive… etc…
