Everyone is talking about the supposedly leaked specs for Microsoft's next machine. Are these statistics enough to make Sony start shaking in their boots…? Yea or nay?

VGLeaks claims to have the full technical specs for the Xbox 720, which has been code-named "Durango." For the record, the site also says they'll reveal the PS4/Orbis soon as well.

The technical documents in question outline a console that boasts an 8-core CPU, a Blu-Ray drive, what appears to be a "constant" hard drive (in that it can't be switched out for another), a DirectX 11.1-capable GPU, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. As for the processor, that will feature an x64 8-core CPU with a clock of 1.6Ghz and "each CPU thread has its own 32KB L1 instruction cache and 32KB L1 data cache," while both modules "of four CPU cores has a 2MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4MB of L2 cache." Lastly, "each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources."

Then there's the 6x Blu-Ray drive and the 32MB of embedded SRAM, and the GPU will supposedly support DirectX 11.1, while it runs at a core 800mhz with 12 shader cores that offer a grand total of 768 threads. At optimum performance, the GPU is apparently capable of issuing "1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second." Now, you can feel free to read up on the rest of it, but the question remains for all you techies out there-

If these stats are accurate, what should Sony think?

Man how much will something like that cost? I mean folks are having a hard time snatching up a Vita because of the prices of it. I'm really wondering if these console makers are concerned about the state of the economy and folks wallets. It just feels too soon.

I'm also quite sure Sony will match that or surpass that.

hahahaha i love it when something new releases in america because everyone starts d^ck measuring. Its rumored, not proven. Has everyone forgotten about the broken durangos? Its annoying when everything bad MS does gets ignored but then something like this gets out and its OMG go MS!

The wii u has been having tons of problems. I heard that it goes as far as the entire console not working. Like not turning on and whatnot. Its a rumor so im not holding it against nintendo. …Rumor.

Same here. This is just sad for the most part. I built my PC almost three years ago, and every part in it is still better then these rumored specs.

That's nothing to worry about, PC specs are always going to be higher as they have plenty more to do than run a minimal OS and games, especially gaming PC rigs.

What World says here is essential. In regards to actual performance of this console and a Windows PC you can't do a 1:1 comparison of the hardware.

What's with the thumbs down? I was expecting a neutral response. I know one could buy a PC for less than the Durango that's more powerful. I just want to know what these specs equate to from a simple CPU/GFX standpoint.

honestly, while that is impressive for a console, I doubt it'll have all of that. Also if MS goes with the whole buy our HDD or else again, I'm likely to pass as long as Sony keeps to the laptop drive setup they used in the ps3.

I would rather spend less now and upgrade to the size and speed I want at my own accord than be limited to the very few options handed out by the console maker.

I know it's not a big deal to some, but I've replaced every hard drive in every ps3 I've owned, it's easy and it's cheap, so why not.

I am a bit worried in these regards.

Sony has introduced their proprietary HD crap with the latest PS3 model. You have to buy an adapter to insert other hard drives in the new PS3.

Beamboom. I think you might be mistaken. I recently bought the new PS3, and the first thing I did was swap out the drive out for a standard WD 750gb 2.5" drive. No problem.

Looks to harmonize with DF's "trusted sources."
Looks like the PS4 will pretty much spank the next Xbox. Supposedly Epic's 2.5 tflops request didn't convince MS this time around. The Durango GPU coming in at just under half of that Samaritan spec. Sony's comes closer to 2 tflops, maybe meets it with the assistance of the APU housed GPU. DDR5 also spanks DDR3 so I say if these specs materialize we should see PS4 bringing the pain next gen.

Isn't DDR5 better optimized for graphics?

Temjin would know the answer about DDR5 but I do know its supposed to be much faster than DDR3. Temjin knows all the technical crap thats what he does 😛

But it is true, if the leaked sources are right PS4 will crush the 720 hands down.

Temjin001

as far as I know DDR5 is known also as GDDR5. It's a graphics based memory to my knowledge.
Thanks Xenris, but my skills are mostly derived from the software side of things, like programming languages. While I'm familiar with PC tech I'm not an electrical engineer and I don't know the nitty gritty aspects. I just know enough to get my way around and interpret things with general accuracy. I've assembled a couple computers and have read up on things more than the general gamer I'd imagine. Perhaps when i take the "architecture and organization" course for computers I may soon become a bit more knowledgeable.

Yeaahhhh thumb down 🙂

DDR is the RAM your CPU uses, GDDR is the vRAM your GPU uses, and GDDR5 is the best form of GPU ram.

This is what I gathered from digging around and asking one of my tech friends.

So yes world you are sort of correct, but you gotta get the G in front of that DDR because from what I can tell plain DDR5 doesn't exist, but GDDR5 does.

The Real Deal

Everyone should be worried, especially the fan-boys. The differences between this generations console are going to be hard to spot. They are essentially going to be identical in most every aspect. The advantage will go to the most innovative of the two.

In saying that, sony still wants the edge. So they will wait until the specs are released to either scale back or upgrade there system. Yes i said scale back. For the first time sony will not be the powerhouse that its known for. They will settle for being only marginally better then the xbox. They learned allot from the ps3 launch, it wasn't the timing that stalled the launch of the ps3, it was the premium associated with the cost of its parts.

They will launch the ps4 with a price tag equal +- 50 dollars to the xbox. To do that, they will sacrifice whatever power they can to achieve that goal. They will mimic microsoft this generation, good, bad, or indifferent; mark my words. Sony is effectively allowing microsoft to define the next generation of consoles.

So to answer the question is sony worried? The answer is No…. But you should be.

Doesn't matter if they are identical on hardware specs, you HAVE to pay to play online with the Xbox, you DON'T have to pay to play online with PlayStation.

Sony wins every time with that equation.

Warrior Poet

Wouldn't it be something if they ended up having (nearly) identical hardware? Which company could do more with their software and services?

Bonampak
Bonampak

And let's not forget that both of them will very likely sell their consoles at a loss initially.

So the question is: which one of them is more prepared to go through that critical first fiscal year without earning any hardware sales profits?

The one that secures 3rd party exclusives or that has the games people want to play (and has them first) will be able to survive that fiscal year thanks to software sales and a bigger share of the gamer user base.

So even if they end up having similar hardware, the winner will be the one that manages to win over gamers and mainstream users and becomes the device where the cool people are at. It sounds so superficial, but that's how things work when there are so many devices with similar capabilities. Just ask Apple and their iPods/iPads.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

I'm thinking no. PS4bis will likely have an upgradeable hard drive, possibly a faster reading Blu Ray or at least equal (and MS will have to pay Sony to use BR tech), FREE online play of course, and a marginally more powerful system that is like to have some hidden juice somewhere to make those exclusives pop.

Maybe you're right about a faster blu-ray, a newer one. Every PlayStation so-far has had a different type of disc (PS1-CD, PS2-DVD, PS3-BluRay). I hope it's something noticeably different if it's even different.

Im thinking more of FREE TO PLAY online. I hate to be cynical about these things but with the direction the gaming industry is going I would not put it past anyone in the console industry.

Won't matter if their main genre will still be FPS. If the PS4 becomes like the PS2 (with a variety of genres and awesome games) then there is nothing to worry about.

The specs are set in stone (devs are already working away on games) the cause of the stare-down between MS and Sony is the price. The first one to give a price is undercut by the other company. Exclusives, power, support, and features don't matter anymore…its all about the price

Sony should be nervous but not because of rumoured specs. Its their financial situation that makes me nervous. I worry that MS has the ability to severely outspend Sony on advertising and can also take a bigger loss on hardware. A lot of pressure on Sony to post a profit since they have been losing billions for years.

I already mentioned this on another PS4 related thread but would like to remind everyone that the most powerful system has rarely won its generation. The N64 was more powerful that the PS1 and the PS2 was the weakest system out of the three last gen. It's really all about the games. That's what defines a platform and drives sales.

I usually have problems with this re-account of history because you're leaving facts out of the assessment to make your point. The PS1 and PS2 were NOT the weakest consoles out there for their respective gens.

First, three consoles I can think of preceded PS1's launch: 3D0, Jaguar, and Saturn. Two of which were undeniably less powerful than the PS1. Saturn had an eccentric design that made it seem less powerful until games started harnessing it's power. So in reality PS1 was in about the MIDDLE of the pack, not the weakest or the strongest in processing. But this point is to be argued as well. N64, the supposed more powerful console, games were hamstrung by a very limited cartridge capacity. Certain games just could'nt be market-ably created. We all know this about Final fantasy. other games like MK Trilogy had HORRIBLE music and lower quality graphic assets in order to hold the game. Publishers were also afraid to produce games on the N64 because of the ridiculously expensive cost associated with cartridges at the time.

Moving on. Ok, so it's JUST about the games. Games, first out to market, and cost is the answer! ….not necessarily. The Dreamcast had all three of those things dialed in and that did not save it. It had great games that made PS2 play catch up for quite some time. Soul Calibur, NF2K, Sega GT, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Sonic, Resident Evil CV and more, including also Phantasy Star Online and Daytona USA Online (I played both). It still failed.

Why do people ignore THIS gen. The Wii came out at the same time as PS3, was the cheapest AND the least powerful, and the WORST games and it still did incredible for a 5-6 year span. Third parties suffered but when we're counting console numbers in a RACE Nintendo was doing great. Right?

I had limited time so i raced through this. i hope it reads with sense.
Personally, I really want Sony to be the premium content provider next-gen and I just don't give a crap if they're number 1 in sales. That has stopped meaning a lot for dedicated gamers for quite some time now.

Being a tech idiot, I'm not sure if those specs are high tech or lacking since it's a next-gen console.
And I'm confident Sony can come up with something big, it is Sony after all, one of the best tech company in the world.

I'm sure the specs on the article does not make Sony nervous at all. I think what Microsoft needs to be more concerned about is getting something other than Halo and Gears of War lol. I mean, at the end of the day I think games and their gameplay are much more important than specs (i.e PS2 vS XBOX).

The PS4 won't be leaps and bounds better than the X720. Devs are going to make one version of their games for next gen. It will be made for the inferior console and ported to the better console. Look at what happens to the poor Vita when a game is released on the 3DS at the same time. The Vita receives an inferior port. It's just a cost effective way for devs to maximize their return.

I would be surprised if the PS4 blew the X720 out of the water. I have a feeling this next gen is going to come down to the games. Which ever console has the better games and the most exclusives will win.

I have a feeling Sony is going to be really innovative with the PS4. There will be a lot of open mouths when they announce. A lot of OMG that's awesome. Sony just needs to stay the course and not let Microsoft launch to far ahead of them. If Sony launches later but announces their launch games and they are incredible a lot of gamers will wait for the better games on the PS4. It's going to be fun!

I'll admit I can't make too much of a comment on spec and the like (most definitely am NOT tech whiz).

However, I will say that it shouldn't make Sony nervous. For me, and for a lot of other people as well, it's all about the software.

Secure the games, and you'll be fine.

Thinking back to last gen, the PS2 was the weakest graphically, yet it's the best-selling console of all time 🙂

Now look at the Vita – a beast of a machine in comparison to the 3DS, and yet it is't selling all that well.

I won't mention the Wii, since that's a bit of an anomaly…

By all the leaked info I've read the GPU in the Orbis is suppose to be substantially more powerful. Also, both will use the same eight-core CPU with rumor being three-cores in the Durango being dedicated to running backround apps. Here is a link to Digital Foundry's take on it.

My (extremely uninformed) opinion is it sounds awesome, but I have little doubt Sony is going to bring the noise with their next console. They are surely furious that they lost their place as the unrivaled King of Consoles and are no doubt determined to regain their throne. They're gonna go big or go home, I have no doubt.

Well, from a PC perspective it's a little underwhelming. But as has been stated above, the OS on consoles typically has a pretty small footprint, leaving more resources for the stuff that matters. Games!

Thankfully, I think this snuffs the persistent x86 rumour. I could see this being a pretty solid console. Obviously they've taken price into consideration here. I was expecting more, but with this should come a pretty reasonable launch price. If this is the real deal I wouldn't expect this console to launch for more than $350. They may even surprise us with a $299 model.

Now, lets wait see what Sony has to put on the table…

For a 6-7 year console cycle, I prefer being second out of the gate with higher specs and newer silicon. I was disappointed that PS3 merely on par with 360 for core CPU/GPU/RAM after launching a full year later.

Every company needs to be nervous or worried about the competition, especially Sony and Microsoft. Sony has lost its leadership position in it's core business of consumer electronics and Microsoft has lost it's leadership position in its core business of computer operating systems.
