Source: Sony’s PS4 VR Headset Will Be Unveiled At GDC

If you want to be part of the virtual revolution, prepare to be excited.

An inside source recently told TechRadar that Sony will officially unveil the PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The show kicks off on March 17.

It seems the Oculus Rift competitor is pretty sweet, as the insider said "the quality and resolution are really, really good" and "people will definitely be impressed." Initially, we expected Sony to reveal this headset at the Tokyo Game Show last September, but the source claims Sony needed more development time:

"Sony has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it."

Sony already has a line of dedicated head-mount displays, but this new headset is geared specifically for gaming. The question is: "Do you want it?" I have zero interest as I'm fairly convinced it'll just succeed in giving me massive headaches. That's just me, though.

I most definitely want it! Though, only if you have the option to use it as a normal display. Plus, if it is wireless, the first thing I would do is play Killzone while on the can… Vita let's me do this already, but boy did Sony screw that one up. At least in my opinion they did. (Lags and the controls are useless)
So, if they came out with a wireless display? DualShock 4 + Wireless Display + Poop = Paradise!

The Vita controls for Shadow Fall took some getting used to but I wouldn't say useless.

I will admit, some games make excellent use of the Vita. One such game is Assassin's Creed 4.
However, my hands are like monsters, and are gigantic. So, my fingers tend to always hit the damn touchpad on the back, resulting in unintended actions.

Honestly though, I just don't like the Vita's streaming abilities. It is limited and uncomfortable, and lags beyond what I would consider a playable level, at least for first person shooters. Third person action games run nicely, though. Amazingly so.

I just prefer the full sized dualshock 4, and possibly a screen that is larger than my index finger. So, if Sony decides to release a vr headset, and if this headset doubles as a wireless HD display, the PS4 will become my new bathroom device, replacing my Wii U and tablet. :p

Yeah the touchpad can be a nuisance. When my internet was stable though I had an amazingly lagless experience with Shadow Fall. Couldn't believe it. It had some trouble with Tomb Raider but that could have been my net acting up.

Price would be a big deal. I'm not huge on this kind of stuff BUUUUT just thinking about it working with Fallout 4 gives me shivers. Exploring the wastes up close and personal like, ooooooh ahhhhh.

I'm looking forward to this. FPSers will get a reboot with it. Can you imagine playing Skyrim with this? RPGS or MMOS will be interesting.

This would only be fun for a couple of hours. I have a feeling that the novelty would wear off after that.

According to the tweeter guy, the VR may be demonstrated with SSM new IP, or at least that's what I think it's implying.

Being one who's tried an early dev version of Oculus Rift, I say: I can't possibly be more excited for any new gaming hardware than this.

To enter the game world in this manner, with what I'd call *true* first persion view plus depth, surely that must be a dream come true for most?

If only the technology is good enough, ergo high enough resolution and a steady image, this will totally replace the monitor for me as the main gaming "screen".

sure, ill believe it when i see it!
first it was TGS, than it was CES, than it was DICE, and now GDC.
plus, why announce it at GDC?
GDC is for developers, wouldent they have already shown it of already?
seems kinda pointless to announce a consumer oriented device at a event where consumers are not allowed entry.
more likely to see it at E3.
not to mention he says its going to be revealed with SSMs first ps4 title, why would $ony announce their biggest ps4 game, at GDC?
people have been frothing at the mouths to see what there working on ever since cory came back and did that blog post, there is no freaking way in hell there announcing it at GDC!

though whenever they do release it i really hope $ony sticks to the premium range they always go for.
this is a VR display, it his highly prototype material, new technology is ALWAYS expensive!
one thing i HATE about oculus, you cant bring in new technology and dispel the stereotypes by cheaping out!
people are still skeptical about VR because the infamous virtual boy, the infamous latency issues, the infamous blur, the infamous poor resolution, the infamous tiny depth of field.
all of that CAN be solved, but oculus is not solving it because there being so tight a$$ed!
i remember trying the 1080P prototype last year and it was so much better than the dev kit, but its still no where near good enough.
theres still significant lag, significant blur, and the screen door effect is still far too noticeable.
for VR to work you NEED a 2560×1600 OLED display, NOTHING less than that otherwise the whole experience falls apart!
and thats the problem with oculus, ooooooooh it has to be low res otherwise people wont have powerful enough PCs to run it.
oh f*cking bullsh*t!
you do realize most PC gamers have 2K displays by now, and some even 4K displays right?
i mean for consoles fine, but 1080P for a freaking PC device is just ridiculous!

so i really hope $ony ignores oculus, does not try to compete with them, and instead give people what they really want.
a VR experience like we all dream of, a VR experience that we all imagine.
anything less will be disappointment, and disappointment leads to man this thing was such a waste of money im going to sell it.
$ony, no, NO company wants that!
2 2560×1600 OLED displays, not 1 that is stretched over like the oculus, otherwise you end up with less than 1080P per eye which is just unacceptable for ps4 especially when most games do run in 1080P, and that will make screen door effect much worse!
which is not at all asking much afterall samsung are suppose to be releasing exactly that with their galaxy S5 next week!
yes 2 will be expensive but so freaking what, we didnt complain that the apollo missions were too expensive now did we?
and obviously a field of view at least as good as the rift, whole point of VR is your in the experience, that means your whole field of view is covered.

they really need to work on the screen door effect though, even with 2 2560×1600 displays you will still get it.
thats why i sold my rift dev kit it gave me a massive headache because of eye strain and it totally destroyed the graphics and therefor immersion.
whole point of VR is to put you in the experience, but it kinda takes you out of the experience when suddenly your world looks like a SNES game!
motion tracking like what the oculus rift crystal cove prototype has seems interesting, but the downside being you need a camera mounted wherever you are which is a pain.

so, please $ony, please dont cheap out and make a VR headset like oculus, a headset which is going to make people say yup this is exactly why i said ill believe it when i see it, the techs still not ready.
it IS ready, companies are just too tight a$$ed to pay for it!
new tech is expensive, afterall you dont see mclaren, ferrari, and porche destroying the stereotype that hybrids have to be ugly slow PoS, by putting 5 dollar batteries in them now do you?
no there proving the stereotype wrong by bringing the best technology possible, to show that electric motors can actually be bloody brilliant to power a supercar!
just like VR can be everything you dream of, AND MORE, but only if you spend the money on bringing the best technology to it!

While I agree with your views mostly I disagree with you saying that companies are tight. One most gaming companies aren't going to put a product out that is really expensive because it won't sell near as well and they'll never make the money back. Second Sony as a whole has been losing employees and trimming its business back, so will they risk a high end costing product for a possible negative return these days? No they won't. Business for mass consumers isn't going to employ the highest tech that's possible so that the vast majority can buy it. Tight company? No but business smart? Yes.

tight.
$ony use to be happy about selling really high end products because they knew that there were enough people who would buy it because they want that quality.
now everythings built as cheaply as possible.
VRs not something you can cheap out on, deliver a $400 dollar product like oculus say there aiming at, and there going to make allot less money than releasing a $1000 dollar product!
$400 people say yea this is exactly why i said ill believe it when i see it, the technology is still not ready, this was not worth its money im selling it.
$1000 bucks, holy ^%$# this is so AMAZING im getting everyone i know to come over and try it!
