A couple days ago, VGChartz had the PlayStation 4 at 5.2 million sales worldwide .
Now, it's official: Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) has announced that the PS4 has cumulatively sold through more than 5.3 million units globally. This number is accurate as of February 8, 2014. Said President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House:
"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season. We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation® fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."
Yep, the PS4 will launch in Japan next week, and that should really boost the global sales tally. Don't forget that, according to Sony, the PS4 was not only the top-selling console in the US in January, it "nearly doubled" the sales of the Xbox One. Oh, and don't forget that the PS4 exclusive, inFamous: Second Son , drops next month!
I think Sony underestimated their system considering the fact that they predicted 5 million will be sold, not by the end of February, but by the end of March. Think it will hit 7 or 8 million by the end of March?

well, without the Japan launch, probably 6.5-7 million.
But WITH the Japan launch, definitely close to 8 million or more.
Impressive numbers. Think you meant PS4 sales were double that of the Xbox One in January, not February.
Next month both consoles should see an increase in sales hopefully, with Infamous and Titanfall releasing!!
Except that Titanfall isn't exclusive. It can be played on 360 and PC. If you want to play infamous:SS, you -need- a PS4.
Another generation of gaming another generation of false exclusives for the Xbox.
I never said it was exclusive! It will most definitely appear that way with MS's marketing machine though. Either way both games will probably help sell next-gen consoles (think both games are going to be included in system bundles??). Which is great for the industry regardless of what system you own.
That is true, you didn't. Though to be fair neither of us said you did…
I hate Tom Brady too. Mainly because he's from that team up north.
That would average to more than one million per month. Congrats Sony!
Nice work Sony! And the Japanese release is right around the corner. I'm very interested to see how the numbers look after it hits the market over there.
you mean 2 million units a month XMazzt3r
with Japan getting into the tally on the 22nd we should see 6 million plus next month. WTG Sony!
Greatness Awaits
No, its here already.
I wonder why we got it
Before Japan did
Is this sarcasm?
Lol it appears that way but no. But i think i can guess why
Sony already has Japan locked up. They know they will destroy MS in Japan. So they've concentrated the initial release across North America and Europe. Better to spread all the units they have across these territories early on than wait and give MS a head start.
That makes total sense
Guess who just picked up their PS4? 😉
PSN: Aerifale
Be nice and give us an add folks.
Sales numbers look good. Surprised by how much twitch I'm watching on the machine. Also really glad that the PSstore is more user friendly.
All in all I really love my sleek, new sexy machine. Best thing so far is the controller, Is that weird?
Not weird at all. I love the controller too. The speaker and the longer handle makes this the best controller yet.
Goal met.
I'll be adding to these numbers by 1 since uncle Sam took way more taxes from me this year and sent me an apology in the form of a refund
Welcome to the family. Uncle Sam took a lot from me too, but he didn't apologize, he demanded more.
Damn Uncle Sam.
If I had to guess at our uncle's name, I'd say it's probably something like Uncle Saul.
This is going to be one exciting console generation. Sony always comes through with the games and did wonderfully with the PS3 even with the uphill battle and constant negativity. Imagine what we will see with all this positivity. We are in for quite a ride. PS4 Greatness has arrived!
Not enough RPGs but other than that I was satisfied with the PS3 lineup.
Safe to say at this point Sony has clear, decisive momentum over Microsoft… for now. Could one game, Titanfall, really change things around for Microsoft? For all the acclaim, I'm not so sure. The X1 is a full hundred dollars more, and the even the supposedly improved Kinect you have to buy with it is a big enough pain in the a$$ that owners are already sick to death of it. I can only imagine what it's like living with someone barking every few minutes, "Xbox! TV On! Watch ESPN!" or whatever, instead of just using a remote!
To say nothing of the system's other technical shortcomings, it appears early on that Microsoft really, really overestimated the appeal of their signature peripheral. The sooner they bring a base system to market without it — and the extra 100 bucks — the better for them. I have to think that's their only hope right now.
i'll give u a bet that there will be alot of people gearing up for infamous next month aye and others i'm sure
happy gaming =)
oh and just for the record i think we'll couple million or more from japan like maybe 7.5mil globely but myabe i'm just too optimistic
happy gaming =)
With the Japanese release about to hit, I would not be surprised to see the PS4 sales double those of the XBO by the end of next month unless Titanfall turns out to be absolutely immense.
But definitely impressive figures for Sony here.
Titanfall will sell a ton of units for MS thanks to the hype train but I don't see what all the hype is about. I'll eventually check it out on the PC but it just looks like COD with jetpacks. I hate that style/type of game.
Nor do I, man. Only ever tried CoD online a couple of times, but it definitely was not for me, and what I've seen of Titanfall doesn't inspire me to want to give it a shot. I've got a mate who went hands-on at the EB Expo last year though, and he absolutely swears by it, saying that it will be a high watermark for FPS games. But he's a PC gamer, so no X1 for him. 🙂
and it hasnt even released in its homeland yet!
and they were saying home consoles were dead……………..
