If you love to be scared, you need to circle a specific date on your calendar.

Bethesda has announced that The Evil Within , the new survival/horror effort from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, will release in North America on August 26, 2014, and three days later in Europe. The title will be available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Developed by Mikami's team at Tango Gameworks, this game "embodies the meaning of pure survival/horror." With detailed environments, a building sense of urgency and tension, and a top-tier narrative, the atmosphere should be second-to-none. You have limited resources and of course, therein lies the survival challenge. Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partner investigate a series of murders, and they discover a "mysterious and powerful force." After they do, the hideousness prevails…

I'm definitely paying attention to this one, though I do hope Capcom still reboots Resident Evil and gets that series back to the awesome survival horror feel Mikami established way back in the PS1 days.

Incidentally, what's everyone think of Outlast? Maybe it's because I haven't played a survival horror game in a while but MAN is it terrifying. I started the other night alone in a dark room, curtains drawn and all lights off, and after 40 minutes or so I had to stop. Tried again a few days later with lights on, door open and my fiance right outside, and I lasted a bit longer but still creeped myself out! I remember freaking out years and years ago when I tried playing Resident Evil 4 in isolated, dark conditions and being too scared to leave the room I was playing in afterwards 🙂

I loved Outlast, played it 3 hours a day until it was done. Such an honest effort that unfolds the way these games should. It borrowed heavily from Bethesda's Call of Cthulhu which was a big turn on for me.

I agree. Outlast is a refreshing change to what has been lately and I look forward to The Evil Within as being a major title that reverts back to survival horror. Last time I was scared in a game was Resident Evil 4 too, and I loved it! :).
