Ever since it was revealed in Game Informer that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes can be completed in about two hours, the game has received plenty of flak.

But numerous reports continue to come in from those who have played the game, saying it's absolutely not two hours (unless you rush right through it and ignore everything else), and besides, the game is impressive .

Just check out the assortment of feedback compiled by DualShockers . Power Unlimited Editor Samuel Casado was quoted as saying that the story is amazing: "Goosebumps. Disbelief. Shock. 'reboots game' I'm going back in." Then there's VG Resource's Dazz Brown saying that it's "not a 2 hour game," and it's also a "great demonstration" of the vaunted FOX engine.

Here are a few more comments on the length. Play Magazine's Sam Smith:

"Finished GZ for the first time in about 90 minutes. Total game completion? 9%. I think that tells you all you need to know."

Sergio Pennacchini:

"To finish mgsv in 2 hours is like going out for dinner with charlize theron and take her to mcdonalds."

"After completing the main mission and a side mission in 4 hours the game says I’m at 10% completion. Sounds good to me"

There are more reports of the frame rate being "butter smooth" on the PlayStation 4, and the control has been refined, too. They're also talking about numerous ways to achieve any given objective using only stealth, and that should make the stealth aficionados very happy. Oh, and don't forget about those incredible facial animations!

Maybe this is the kind of information we should be emphasizing.

I was having a conversation tonight with my best friend telling him that it's not two hours unless you rush through it. Furthermore, I prefer two hours of MGS5 over more than half of the crap companies are releasing nowadays.

Like I said, the main mission can be done quickly but the side quests and stuff add a lot more hours to your session. I'm quoting myself albeit paraphrasing.

I still can't justify spending that much money on something that I may get only a few hours of enjoyment out of. I've played a lot of games with great main missions but when jumping into side missions felt redundant and second thoughts.

Ok, so what's the deal here?… How long is the main story and all the side quests?… So after completing the main story and one side quest that is only 10% of the total game. What's the other 90%? Does this game have 10+ hours of side quests? Or is the other 90% multiplayer?

Well… no-ones refuting my understanding of the two hour length. It was always only ever the story campaign, which as far as I'm concerned is the major reason to play any MGS.

So, Kojima has moved the focus of the game to sidequests (which we kind of should have seen coming with Peace Walker); does that mean that we should just accept that there's two hours worth of core narrative?

It's like I wrote when this hullabaloo first kicked off:
"…the meat of Metal Gear Solid has always been the narrative. To provide such a small helping of what has heretofore been of paramount importance to the franchise as a near-premium release under any pretext is wrong. In my eyes, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes sets a dangerous precedent. It asks players to excuse a dearth of core content due to the presence of extraneous fluff. Metal Gear Solid is not The Elder Scrolls. The same principles cannot be applied to both."

You're complaining about the length without knowing anything of the quality. As it is a Metal Gear Solid title, it is pretty much a guarantee that the narrative will be solid. Without having hands-on experience, you have no idea how much information is going to be squeezed into those two hours. Honestly, Bioshock Infinite is a pretty short endeavor, but that made it no less fantastic. Don't knock it until you try it.

I freely concede that it could be an amazing experience. But this isn't Gone Home. This isn't Journey. Mechanically, it's a fully featured game, but that isn't reflected by the quantity of core content, and yes, the two are linked in my mind. Anyway, here's the link to the source of the quote above:

the main problem i find is the amount of money they are charging for 2 hours of core content.

Kryten1029a

why didn't they just come and emphasize that the 2-hour figure was just for the main campaign? The only statements that I've seen have pointed to short but well-executed games like Journey and used that as a defense. They could have blunted a lot of the criticism if they had pointed to sidequests and the like.

Metal Gear was never about sidequests that's why they didn't tell that, this it's damage control they are coming with % competition but reality it's the main camping suffered because of the open world.

''Finished GZ for the first time in about 90 minutes''

That's not good I don't care about if he got 90% or 1% he still finished the game in less than 2 hours.

so, the games SHORTER than the 2 hours GI quoted?
great!
sorry people dont care about stupid collectables and boring fetch quest side missions, this is MGS, people play MGS for the story, for the campaign, not for some stupid boring a$$ side mission!
as i said before id rather EAT 90 bucks worth of 1 dollar coins than spend it on a 2 hour game!
especially when said game has the MGS name on it, a name which is famous for creating amazingly complex convoluted indepth really long stories!
a 2 hour story for MGS is like a cheap and cheerful slow as a slug ferrari.
utterly useless!

Agree side missions? the only Metal gear that did those was Peacewalker and I usually skipped them because they were boring!

all side missions are boring, one reason i wish developers wouldnt bother putting them in and put more time and effort into the campaign.

lol only 2 hours i think i'll pass on this i never did get Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII to due the snow storm here thats 2 games i was hyped that flopped. I don't think i'll get either till they hit used under twenty. maybe they will be last two games i get on my Ps3 before i pack it in

as for its Metal gear Solid meaning it will have great narritive well people used to say the same thing about Final Fantasy

A name doesn't make a game great a name just creates interest or sales if its an established name

as for 90% of the game being side quests no thanks
if i wanted to play a game with that many side quests ill play sacred 2 fallen angels
or an MMO because side quests in those games are actually 1 of the main focuses of the games and helps towards the main story as opposed to ok 90 minutes of main story then pure sidequests

honestly i think Kojima is just trying to Milk MGS

% completion kinda doesn't matter, most gamers don't go searching for every possible little things, they do the main story and some or all side missions. % completion is usually a matter of collecting difficult things or doing tons of extraneous tasks.

ill agree world most gamers usually beat the main game and quit after or might give it 1 more play through

i honestly hope this flops because of the BS their pulling
i wonder will they let you try a 60 minute free trial with PS+ of the game if your fast enough you might be able to beat it

daus26

Even if you don't beat it, and the fact that a reviewer (assuming he's a casusal MGS player) can finish it in about 90 minutes first time, most of us will be over half of it in an hours worth. Would any of us pay $30 to $40 for the other half?

Great, I don't care one bit, D1P for me. Kojima is a dev that must be supported. I will play through it methodically. I will get way more than 2 hours out of Ground Zeroes.

On a side note I just beat Metal Gear Solid PS1 last night on my Vita! Completely loved the whole game. It took me 13 hours. What a wonderful 13 hours it was to learn about the MGS legend. The story was top notch and I scratch my head as to why this was never made into a movie?! To know what FOXHOUND, Big Boss and Liquid Snake are is really gratifying!! So smart on so many levels. It's amazing what Kojima was able to do with the PS1 tech. I did beat Metal Gear on the NES but this was so much more! Never had a PSX but owned MGS on my PC but never finished it so this was a very special moment for me. The last month has seen GoWII, GoWIII and MGS solved. I am a very happy gamer! I bought Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty HD for the Vita last night. My plan is to beat all MGS games before Ground Zeroes releases. I am so into MGS though so inFAMOUS 2 and Second Son will have to wait. I want to truly enjoy both games without thinking about another game universe like MGS. Playing these games really makes me proud to be a Playstation gamer. I regret not owning the PS1 and PS2. I wish I could go back and change that. Playstation games really appeal to me.

Thanks for sharing, Crusade, I'm always glad to hear about someone discovering and enjoy MGS games. The original really is a classic — the atmosphere is just unmatched. I still fire it up on my Vita or PS3 from time to time to revisit that awesome world. I even recently gave the Gamecube remake a whirl for the first time — it was not very good, stick with the original 🙂

MGS 2 is CRAZY, though over time I've come to appreciate it a lot more. For my money, MGS 3 is not only the best Metal Gear game, but probably my favorite or second favorite game of all time (it's between that and Symphony of the Night.) MGS 4 is slick, a really nice iteration and conclusion to the saga. Hard to believe the game is SIX YEARS old now, because it still looks just awesome. Peace Walker was a lot of fun, though I wish it had been made for consoles too.

And I too am getting PSYCHED for Ground Zeroes! So relieved my worries that the depth and length of the game will be well worth the price of admission.

This is great news! Sounds like this has the potential to feel "complete", and certainly not too short or shallow. Those were my primary concerns, so if these impressions are accurate this will definitely be worth 30 of my dollars. Thank goodness, since the thought of missing a single moment of Metal Gear was galling.

"To finish mgsv in 2 hours is like going out for dinner with charlize theron and take her to mcdonalds."

Not hating on the game, but to give us a 90 minute campaign in a video game, is just like buying a 90 minute movie for $40 with 5 plus hours worth of bonus behind the scene footage. In other words, content most may not care about.

If you have the PS4 or PlayStation app, you can clearly see from the trophy section how many out there bother to plat the games or go through all the extra stuff… not very many.

However, I have to see for myself what this other 90% is. If it's a bunch of repetitive side quests/mission, that's unacceptable, imo.

They should've made it in the same format as MGS4! You know, 6 hours of cutscenes with 3 hours of gameplay!

Not a fan of the series, I have played some of the older games and ended up trading them in for… Syphon Filter games, which I thoroughly enjoyed more on the PS1. Well, with the exception of SF3.

Bit boring and slow to my tastes, BUT hopefully there is more to the game than what people have been saying. Maybe more exploring than a main campaign, but I hear what some are saying. Would the Last of Us been better to be more exploration and more of a 2 hour campaign? Granted there was not much to the story in general but more a story around character development through crisis situations.

Keep playing!

I still don't see the controversy. 'Guns of the Patriots' can be completed in two hours, even though it's obviously not a two-hour game, so I'm not worried at all.

Someone look up how fast it is to beat the main quest in Skyrim. It'll make your head spin. The rest of the game is just side quests. Yeah, that's the attitude people.

The completionist in me is happy of course, but some part of me doesn't care for the fact that the main story is less than 10% of the content in the game.

Do any of the side stories enhance the story at all?
