So if Sony really does announce the PS4 in March, along with the inevitable hardware discussions, we'll start hearing about possible launch titles.

In this respect, I think we should be optimistic. Sony delayed the launch of the PlayStation Vita so they could end up with the biggest brand launch ever; it was a great idea, too, because there were a good 25 games on the shelf when the Vita debuted. The fact that there doesn't appear to be any Vita games on the immediate horizon is neither here nor there (at least not as it pertains to this topic).

The point is that Sony seems to understand the importance of having games for the launch of a new piece of gaming hardware, although it's certainly true that consoles these days are basically just PCs for the living room. So understanding this, it seems likely that Sony will have maybe one or two AAA titles ready to go for the PS4…if so, which one(s) do you want to see? Personally, I'm going to go with Uncharted 4 because in my estimation, that series has been head and shoulders above all other games this generation, and what Naughty Dog could do with the PS4 boggles my mind. I mean, it literally gives me chills.

But there are other possibilities. Gran Turismo 6 has a shot, Killzone 4 might be there, and hey, where's the next inFamous ? How come we haven't heard anything about inFamous 3 ? Is it because Sucker Punch has been secretly working on a sequel for the next PlayStation machine? Any other ideas? What's the one game that would make you go, "Oh yeah, I'm buying the PS4 immediately "? Price notwithstanding, of course.

My most wanted would be an actual final fantasy of old, a good one. One that all jrpg fans play and say, "yeah, now this is Final Fantasy!"

Not going to happen, but hey, you asked.

I'm gonna have to agree with Ben and go with Uncharted 4 as well. I think Naughty Dog could do absolutely amazing things with more powerful hardware! I'm really hoping we get all next gen games at a full 1080p and at least a rock solid 30 fps 🙂

If Borderlands 3 was a launch title that would be awesome. But it sounds like BL2 is getting full support from gearbox with rumors of huge upcoming ideas for it, aswell as another character possibly. You must like the game as much as I!

Read a huge console war. A dev said something about the ps4 being 50% better than the new xbox. The MS fanboys came running and my god, what a read. As for my most anticipated game… Hm… Give me Demons Souls 2. Yep. Thats all it would take to get me to buy the ps4. Or an actual FF.

Well, its on a youtube video. The guys talking were talking about the dev saying it. So i guess i could try and find it for you. Otherwise im sorry, but i dont want to link youtube comments. I feel dirty for even reading them. You think by now the 360 fanboys would give it a rest. Although if you really want it… Ill sum it up for you.

360 better we have halo. PS3 better we have real exclusives. 360 better we have better graphics. PS3 better we have blu-ray. Oh yeah well 360 has girls on it. People on ps3 have wives and girlfriends. girls on 360 are hot and not fat. Girls on ps3 don't brag about being girls on ps3. Oh yeah? well your gay and your a fa$%^@. KK bro.

Literally how the entire thing went down. As i said, i feel dirty for even reading through it. But yeah, one of the guys in the vid said 'not true' the other was all hyped up while the other wished nintendo would stop sucking and make something like the 64 again. I didn't feel the need to read anymore into it cause they talked about it for me haha. Sorry biker.

It's hilarious watching a fanboy desperately defend their ideologies only to inevitably result to illogical and outrageous comments. That doesn't just apply to Xbox fanboys, I'm talking about ALL fanboys.

I have absolutely no idea what to expect of the ps4… I mean I look at the ps3 and think "how much better can it really get?" Sure you could smooth out the rough edges but would the jump in technology be as big as the ps1-ps2 or ps2-ps3??? BTW, it would be Uncharted 4 /KH3 for me.

Honestly, Starwars Battlefront 3. And im no Starwars nerd. Never seen a single Starwars movie, but the game was fun!

Bounty Hunter 2? A new Syphon Filter? The Darkness 3? Battlefield 4? I can go on forever, the games are endless.

How about… Dead in The Water? Or Destruction Derby? Who knows what the future bestowes upon us.

Guerrilla, Media Molecule, Polyphony, Sucker Punch, San Diego Studio, Evolution: All Sony owned developers who could feasibly have a game ready to go close to launch date based on the duration since their last games. I feel that most would be working on a new IP, rather than one established. Plenty of them could tempt me.

The killer apps would be a new Valkyria Chronicles, GT6/Prologue and absolutely anything from Ninja Theory.

What I dream is that it's not just a bunch of the old-fashioned, ultra-linear set-piece stuff that has so typically been the PS exclusives.

I'd love to see something truly different and NEW; Something that makes us go "wow now THAT is cool!", "wow I didn't see THAT coming" and not just the same-old under a fat layer of gloss and high resolution eye-candy.

I believe this will happen during the next gen, something that will create some major waves on the gaming scene, but I seriously doubt it will come from any of the 1st party developers. Instead they will keep churning on the old formulas. 🙁

Oh by the way – isn't there a chance that Dragon Age 3 might come out around launch time? If so then that is most definitely is a system seller for me. Add to that an entirely new adventure set in the Mass Effect universe and I don't really care about other games at all. 🙂

(yup, massive BioWare fan and proud of it 🙂 )

That too, but it's difficult to say "a new idea/formula" without any clue of just what will be capable. I'd like a more open exclusive, like an RPG or a vastly improved inFamous, but I think I'd like to see the way it looks before calling it a system seller.

Beamboom

I agree. And it's so darn easy too, to just say "I want something I've never seen before" without any suggestions of what that might be, like some spoiled brat. 🙂

But, well, I'd just love to see something from Sony that's not so darn predictable. Cause say what you will about the established franchises, but their sequels will be predictable almost by definition. And they were not exactly new and ground-breaking concepts to begin with.

I believe the reason why most of them are so on-rails, is because it enables the developers to create more impressive visuals. I really think it is that simple.

Sonys main goal with the exclusives must be to make something flashy that *immediately* make an impression on you if you walk by a stand in a store or watch a demo. That's the primary goal from their part, and that's what dictates the framework for the projects that are being done under their direction.

Therefore I'm not too optimistic about the exclusives, to be totally frank. I expect just "more of the same". I am far more curious as to what 3rd party developers can come up with of ideas with the new hardware.

I won't disagree with that assessment. Even The Last of Us, though supposedly more open than Uncharted and most of the first party offerings, looks to be a largely linear and scripted affair. But you can't REALLY fault them for wanting to put graphics and spectacle foremost as first impressions are lasting ones. You see something that appeals to your senses immediately, you're more likely to remember it. I'd love to see Sony JP tackle an RPG on their own again or Sucker Punch churn out a new open world adventure game or Polyphony to unshackle GT with city streets, but I don't really see it happening.

For two generations now, Sony has played it safe, seemingly attempting to innovate within established genre boundaries and push storytelling and characterisation (both acts of which I approve, mind you) at the expense of creating the kind of game that you can make your own. But that's only the first parties. You still get exclusives from second and third parties that strike upon the ideals that you extol. Level-5 with Ni no Kuni/WKC, Sega with Yakuza and Valkyria, a case can even be made for MGS4, which offered options as to how you could tackle it.

Although, I think that Media Molecule could come up with something utterly astounding. LBP was a revelation and Tearaway looks just as good and inventive. I can't even imagine what they have up their sleeves for the PS4, considering they've said that they're stepping away from LBP.

i wouldent say dont expect it from the first party studios, allot of them look to want to be doing exactly that.
ND split into 2 teams because they wanted to make something besides a typical michael bay film, same with GG they keep saying they want to do a totally new genre something no one would expect, it will be a new IP.
i actually had a chance to play infamous 2, and meet a few of the devs 4 months before release, and, well, lets just say he wasent optimistic about the series future.
they kept saying they want to move on and make something different, exactly why they left sly behind there starting to feel bored and fatigued.
if anything first party developers should be the ones we are looking to, there the ones with the cash, support, and ambition to do so!
most third party publishers dont have the cash to do so, or if they did what if it flops they might go bankrupt.
most third party publishers dont really care, or have the ambition and interest to innovate and push the industry forward.
most are like treyarch, and are happy to just keep churning out last years game…….

Did I just see someone call Uncharted linear… oh come on! This is exactly the type of mentality which is wrong with 'gamers' this generation. Slapping linear on anything that isn't and open world sandbox like Skyrim or Fallout. The problem with games like that is there is no structure, nor is there any difference between sidequests and story quests so it looses focus and motive for the player.

I would rather a well structured game which has interesting scripted events than just an open world mess with no focus. That is why I liked Dishonored far more than Skyrim and Fallout 3, it had many pathways and side missions which effected the overall outcome of the story mission, which for me made for a far more engaging experience. Sure it was shorter and not as open, but there was a whole town to explore, what more could you want?

Ludicrous_Liam
Ludicrous_Liam

No offense to any of you, but I think you guys are taking a really shallow look at games that are 'linear'.

In a sense, ALL games are linear. You are only allowed to do whatever you want within the confines of the game. If the game's said confinements are transparent enough, then it almost gives you the illusion you're in control. Like in GTA for example: you're allowed to drive around like a nutter, and you feel very much in control (GTA's odd handling physics aside ;p).

But that is actually a massive gameplay element of GTA; have you noticed pretty much every mission has you driving somewhere? Even when you think you're just doing random stuff, anything you want to, 9 times outa 10 you will be driving.

In this sense, you can say GTA is just as linear as Uncharted. Okay, maybe it's me taking a shallow look at GTA now lol, but can't you see what I'm saying?

Beamboom

@Lawless:
No, of course! I totally understand Sony, I just think it is unfortunate. But if I were a hardware manufacturer I'd too want to produce games that had the highest "showroom factor".

This is exactly why I am more curious as to what 3rd party developers will do, cause they don't have a system to sell – just a game.

But to see what Media Molecule will do next will be really interesting to me too! By all means. And that goes for all the other developers as well. I just don't expect the greatest surprises from those camps. But we'll see!

@underline:
I don't agree in that separation between 1st and 3rd party devs. To say that most are like Trenchyard is just plain flat out wrong. The sheer number of 3rd party devs are so big that such a claim falls on its own weight.
Every developer have *some* restraints to work under, it's not that. Budgets, project goals, simply the need to make profit.

But I can never imagine a Sony developer coming up with a game like for instance Minecraft. It would simply never happen.

Beamboom
Beamboom

@Ludicrius:
You are right, essentially everything with a story is linear in the true meaning of the word.
It just have become the standard word to describe games where you essentially just "follow a dotted line" and the directors orders in regards to how to advance.
But we can start calling it "on-rails" instead, personally I prefer that over the word "linear".

@Ultima:
Now you take the word "linear" as being a bad word. It doesn't have to be – it's just a description.

Many, many enjoy "linear"/on-rails games, yourself included, as you described in your comment. There's nothing wrong in that!
"Linear" is simply an objective word used to describe certain properties of a game.

Uncharted is essentially an array of rather small movie sets where you are supposed to do one thing to get to see the next part. That is linearity to the extreme, and IF you don't like that kind of game – *IF* – then it really doesn't matter much how good it looks. That's all I am saying.

The thing is though, you're making it seem like it's a corridor shooter. COD is the game I'd look to if I liked corridor shooters.

If you played the sanctuary part of the game, you eventually get to a bridge. Before you go on it, if you go up to the tower behind you, you get a glimpse of where you just came from in the last hour. And it's like that from beginning to end; at no point in the game will you just "follow a dotted line". To call it on-rail is just crazy.

Beamboom: Just one point- The reason games are linear is not so developers can create more impressive visuals, although it's certainly more difficult to put Uncharted-quality graphics in a game like Elder Scrolls or GTA.

The reason is that they want to tell a cohesive story and there's only one way to do that. The more open a game gets, the less structured a story gets. It's really that simple.

Ludicrous_Liam
Ludicrous_Liam

Just to add to that, I think the actual gameplay and the inherent pacing becomes better structured as a result as well.

Also Boombeam (yeah, that's what get for calling me Ludicrius xD):

You should complete Uncharted (2) a few times. You might catch what we're saying; impressions can differ when playing with a different mindset (as I've tried to explain before but to no avail lol…).

Final Fantasy XV, I know Final Fantasy has taken a plunge, especially with it's recent Sequel/Spin Off. But I would love to see S-E just start a fresh and make a new Final Fantasy, no sequels, no spin offs, no remakes. Just a lovely new Final Fantasy. That is what would convince me to buy a new console.

Beyond that, I'd like to see where the next Tekken will go as Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was actually a lot better than T6. Then I would be interested to see where games from developers Atlus, Level-5, Naughty Dog, R* would go.

God of War 4 — a proper sequel/follow-up/reboot/reimagining/etc. would make the system an absolute Day 1 must-buy. Almost surely won't happen considering God of War: Ascension isn't even out yet, but frankly, I think that's a potentially a really big misstep by Sony. Why wouldn't you launch your new hardware with an extraordinary action game in a franchise Sony fans love that shows off the hardware on day 1?
