Developer Mercury Steam will deliver the anticipated Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 for the PS3, 360 and PC on February 28.

But what's next for the studio? Well, don't expect a similar project with a different title; Mercury Steam is working on something "completely different" for next-gen consoles.

Speaking during a roundtable interview session for LoS2 (as attended by GameSpot ), producer Dave Cox wouldn't go into specifics concerning this mystery title. However, he did confirm that it'd be coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but not the Wii U.

Cox has made some of his ideas public, though, including the desire to do something in the Contra universe, as he stated back in 2012. Could we be looking at the spiritual successor to that legendary franchise…? As for LoS2, Konami is unfortunately not planning to port that game to the newly released consoles; "it would mean kind of taking five steps back," Cox said. Basically, they would've had to change the game engine "significantly." Another studio could handle the port but it's "not on our radar right now."

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 should be excellent – check out our preview if you haven't already – but I'm even more interested to learn about Mercury Steam's new next-gen project.

I seem to remember them saying at one point that the LOS2 engine was next-gen scalable. Eh, I'd rather see something different anyway. LOS2 is gonna be amazing.

Thank God, they didn't do Castlevania justice in the content department.

I thought it was a pretty decent 3d effort. Especially the music…

Well I'm up for new and good. They did well with Castlevania during their tenure. Until LoS I hadn't played a worthwhile Castlevania entry since the 32-bit era.

hope not too different, there one of the only studios out there that know how to create a half decent combat system!
give me skyrim with the combat system out of CLoS, and i can die a VERY happy man!
id be a shame to see them turn their back on that and try something completely different.
please, dont rob us of the only action adventure franchise with a half decent combat system!
