Yesterday, it was announced that Microsoft had sold over 3 million Xbox One consoles in 2013. As that was Sony's goal for the number of PS4s sold in that same time period, we wondered if if they had hit that goal .
Well, they did. In fact, they did 3 million and then some.
Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 hit 4.2 million as of December 28, 2013. The system is now available in 53 countries worldwide but it has yet to launch in Japan. Said President and Group CEO of SEI, Andrew House:
"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network. After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."
PS4 software sales hit 9.7 million during the holiday season, counting physical and digital downloads. Top-selling titles included Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , Call of Duty: Ghosts , Killzone: Shadow Fall and FIFA 14 . Additionally, new PS4 owners have been signing up for PlayStation Plus at a rapid clip; global subscriptions increased by over 90 percent since the launch of the new console. Of course, it helps to remember that in order to play online, you have to have a Plus membership this generation.
PS4 owners are also sharing their gameplay experiences; thus far, over 1.7 million gameplay broadcasts have been streamed from PS4 systems (utilizing Twitch and Ustream), which has resulted in 55 million minutes of footage and 22 million spectate sessions. Yes, the PS4 is off and running!
