No, we have no idea if Tales of Xillia will ever arrive in North America. But you know what? We figure if we start covering the crap out of the JRPGs we want, Namco Bandai will take notice and do the right thing; there are still plenty of role-playing fans in this country, you know! Anyway, the latest in the esteemed Tales franchise has been revealed and detailed, and will launch in September in Japan. Set in a world called Liese Maxia, humans and sprites coexist in a charming landscape that is unfortunately marred by war and roving enemies. There are two main characters: Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell. Jude is a 15-year-old medical student who doesn’t use his brain during battle…he uses his fists. Milla is into spirit artes (no, that isn’t misspelled, I swear).

So yeah, the female is the magic user. Big surprise, huh? Anyway, during your adventure, you will encounter other characters, like Elise Lutus, Tipo, Rowan J. Ibert and Alvin. Each character has a unique set of skills and abilities, and each may be crucial to your survival. We won’t give away any more of the story, so on to the combat mechanic, which is dubbed the “Double Raid Linear Motion” system. This, used in conjunction with the Link Mode system, will dictate the flow of battles. You control one character and AI handles your other party members. It sounds pretty standard but there’s one fresh element that sounds intriguing: the cooperation involved. See, you can tag-team between two characters, which means that – just for example – Jude and Milla can flank an enemy and blindside. To add more depth to the concept, you’ll be able to execute team-up special artes during a combo.

Jude and Milla’s team-up move is called Scarlet Fang, which slices a hapless enemy multiple times. When you link two characters, you control one of them (the “master”) and the AI handles the other (the “partner”). You’ll be able to tell which two characters are working together during battle, because a blue line will connect them. Obviously, the decision to make one character the “master” will make a huge difference, so strategy is definitely going to play a major role. This system sounds like it has potential but I’m a little concerned at the complexity involved; this is a real-time mechanic (yeah, so what else is new?) and with the sheer amount of stuff happening at any given time…well, it might feel a tad overwhelming.

But there are benefits to this style and if done correctly, it may prove to be fluid and even seamless. The possibilities really seem endless and you’ll have full control at all times. You’ll even be able to swap out party members at any time with the d-pad and to make things even easier, pressing R3 will cause time to slow as you select a new party member. I will add one final caveat and those familiar with JRPGs this generation will know what it is before I type it- we require great AI for all this to work correctly. We also need a solid balance between the overall challenge, the speed of the combat, and the rate at which we become familiar with the mechanic. If the developers can time things just right, we should be in for a treat.

…provided Tales of Xillia ever comes here, of course.

In other words, buy Tales of Graces F so that Namco want to bring Tales of Xillia to the West as well.

I REALLY hope this gets localized. I'll contribute to that by buying Tales of Graces F day one.

And I think the battle system sounds great. The Tales team is really talented when it comes to gameplay. That's the heart of this series after all.

Looks slicker than a set of blue goat lips, can we get a "Coming to NA in 2012" trailer at E3?

I always loved the art style of these games, but sadly, I've never played any of them. Tales of Graces F will have to be my first I guess. Anyone know when it's suppose to come out?

I'm on the same boat as you, never played any of the Tales games, although they carry a good reputation. I've actually purchased a few (a Wii version, another 1 or 2 for the PSP, and I believe for my PS1 and PS2), but due to my humongous backlog of games, I haven't gotten to any of them. It definitely looks interesting enough, and I'm sure I'll purchase it down the line.

Is the Tales for PSP any good?

Tales of VS is supposedly a completely different class of game to the rest of the Tales of series. The Radiant Mythology games are, I think, similar to the flagship series, and Tales of Rebirth is a port from the PS2 game, so it'd be the one to spring for methinks. I'm sure you can find a few reviews around the web to gauge quality by.
Peace.

Tales of Rebirth and VS are both Japanese imports according to Amazon. Only the first Tales of RM is available. :_(

I'm not really into RPG's so I don't know much about this series, but I noticed that I have a 1997 PS1 game called "Tales Of Destiny".

So is this one part of this series because the cover art looks close to this one.
And if so, is the one I have the first one, & how many others are in this series???

You got it bSaint. If the title begins with "Tales of.." , its a part of the series. Just not that each game is different with similar feels to the predecesors.

Not to mention that with every console generation, Namco seems to improve the gameplay and graphics. IMHO, Namco has always gotten the story telling right with these JRPGs.

Xillia will be the thirteenth flagship title, though the thirtieth entry in the Tales of series. Damn… Check the Tales of page in Wikipedia for a full listing and details.

I'm so excited for this game. I'm prayin' it is localized. I will be supporting NamcoBandai by purchasing Tales of Graces F when its released. Tales of Xillia is PS3 exclusive and is clearly the best looking Tales game thus far. If anyone feels the same I do, then then pick up Tales of Graces F when it hits store shelves in NA and Europe.

Tales of Graces F and Xillia are both must-haves for me when they release. Then of course there's Dark Souls, WKC2 (I wish SOMEONE would give me an Aus date :/ Euro gets it next week, and we can't even preorder it, even though the Sony site says June), FFXIII-2, Versus XIII (too hopeful?) another Atelier, Mass Effect 3, Disgaea 4, Ni No Kuni and Skyrim (I'm sure that I'm missing some) all set for release by the end of next year, and if Sony doesn't announce at least a new exclusive RPG at E3 this year I'll be surprised (I mean, they did commission WKC:Origins, so they must have some faith in the genre). The RPGs, both J and W are coming, and I'm a waitin' for most. 😀
Peace.

EDIT: Scratch that… WKC2 has been taken of the PS AU site. WTF?! Although the Euro blog says that it releases here on the 9th, the same day as inFamous 2. Oy vay. Maybe they're in the middle of updating it on the AU site :/

The Tales games can go to hell. That nasty combat system? That long-winded storytelling with 90% of conversations being irrelevant? The supposed dramatic moments that simply smack of yesteryear's cliches. Tales series is the bottom of the jrpg barrel and covering it in the news isn't going to make the game better or make NA gamers buy it.

A MESSAGE TO EVERYONE WHO WANTS THIS GAME TO BE LOCALIZED:

There is a very simple way to greatly increase the chances of that happening. Buy Tales of Graces F for the PS3 when it gets released in the West next year. Case in point: Yakuza 3 sold well in the West so that convinced Sega to release Yakuza 4 here as well. Who knew?

I'll be preordering TGF soon as its available at amazon. Xillia looks awesome.Namco should do a hd collection.

Oh, and while we're on the subject I might as well post this wonderful little video that was made BEFORE the localization of Tales of Graces F was announced. Here it is:

Hey, why didn't you show the new trailers from tales of festival? =( They are much more awesome! They show more gameplay, exploration and story.
Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzXCfwE6TMY
Story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_a0bCpnoU4

Anyways…I'm super excited about this game. I will buy in japanese and in english, if it's released in the US. Please buy Graces too, people!

I assume that you're talking to me even though you didn't directly reply to my post.

The reason I didn't show those trailers is because I wasn't aware of them. I'll probably buy this game when it comes out in the west but I haven't been following it all that closely so far because it's western release isn't until next year and I also have a number of other good things to think about.

Even so I thank you for pointing out those videos to me and everyone else on this website. I appreciate it.

I think Kagamin was talking about the trailer of Xillia that Ben put up. There are actually 2 new trailers that were reveal no more than 3 or 4 days ago I believe. One of them shows a more developed gameplay of the battle system.

Seeing as how Ben mentioned a little on the story and gameplay, I sure he's aware of the new trailer but just decided to post the very first trailer of this game.

Fair enough. I guess that should have been obvious. How silly of me.

Yeah I was talking about the trailer Ben showed. It's just that this trailer is almost 6 months old already…and now we have more detailed trailers so I wanted to share with you guys.

Sorry about the confusion.
