Scheduled release date:
Q4 2011
Publisher:
Capcom
Developer:
Slant Six
Number Of Players:
1-4
Genre:
Action

I was playing the single-player campaign of SOCOM 4 last night and I tried to picture that squad-based third-person action with zombies. Evidently, this is what we can expect from the upcoming spinoff, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City , which will task the player with directing teams of four through a chaotic environment. If you’re a long-time fan of the series, you’ll actually think you’re playing as the bad guys, because you’re assuming the role of an Umbrella operative. Furthermore, you’re supposed to hunt down and kill Leon Kennedy…a former franchise hero. Developed by Slant Six – developer of many SOCOM entries; hence, the above allusion – we’re looking at a traditional shooter complete with a cover mechanic.

And while we’re on the subject, yes, you can fire while running. You can’t exactly have the old-fashioned tank controls in a fast-paced action game, now can you? The game will indeed be a lot faster than any prior installment and in fact, it seems as if Capcom doesn’t want the fans to think of this as RE6. It really isn’t. They’ve said we might see a return to the traditional survival/horror format when and if they announce the sixth Resident Evil , so if this preview turns you off, take heart in that vague promise. For more good news, we have to remember that the atmosphere and style of Operation Raccoon City will remain very much RE in nature; the pervading darkness and overall sense of creepiness will be a big part of your adventure. This is enough to pique our interest.

You’ll be able to choose your character at the start of your co-op mission: there’s Vector, Spectre, Bertha and Beltway. Vector kills from the shadows in true stealth fashion, Spectre is the gadgets and surveillance member, Bertha is a medic, and Beltway handles the heavy weaponry and explosives. …yeah, well, I’m not playing as anyone named “Bertha,” anyway. All four will have to work together if they intend to survive, as the streets of Raccoon City now hold many times more zombies than ever before. One interesting element is that this time around, the walking dead are like sharks- the more damage you take, the more ravenous they’ll become. This means things can go downhill awfully quickly, so it’ll be crucial to remain cautious and attentive. Plus, the Hunter is back and they’ll be tossing in even freakier enemies, just for the sake of…freakiness.

That’s the story campaign but there will also be a competitive mode, where the four class-based Umbrella operatives take on US military spec ops soldiers. For some reason, the US military and Umbrella don’t feel like working together to cleanse the city, so in competitive mode, it erupts into a turf war. To shake things up, those zombies will still be roaming the streets, so you’ll have multiple targets and your head will have to remain on a swivel. You’ll net 10 points for killing a human enemy and 1 point for a zombie kill so obviously, just running around mowing down the flesh-eaters won’t get you very far. You’ll also score bonus points for taking down special enemies and helping your team in other ways. It should be a big lure for multiplayer aficionados.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is scheduled to arrive later this year for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Notice we couldn’t bring ourselves to put “Survival/Horror” as the Genre.

Hopefully it's playable at launch unlike Socom.

Off topic: hey Ben, what did you think of the new Mortal Kombat web series. I'm surprised you guys didn't even mention it when it debuted on the 12

To repeat the end of that trailer…

They should have just called it "Resident Evil, we want twitch gamers."

I'm not big on running and gunning games or mindless zombie attack games, so I'm not seeing a reason to care what happens to this game.

I wish I can be like World and "avoid this like a position downwind of hot garbage" but my loyalty to the RE brand is sickening.

One question about this game; is why would I need stealth?

Clamedeus

I don't know why you would need stealth when zombies can smell you out. Unless they are very stupid zombies. o.O

which raises my next question, would mentally retarded people have the same retardation as zombies?

Umm..well..I'd imagine that 4 people in a city full of zombies would definitely use stealth elements to avoid the zombies..it's not like 4 people can mow down an entire city filled with zombies and other creatures….just sayin…

I'm sure you can, it's a game. I guarantee people will, stealth is useless in some cases.

In all the zombie movies I've seen and game I've played, its when people tried to hide and be sneaky that gives the zombies time to gather and swarm.

Umm..what movie is that? Every single zombie movie I've seen is basically based on people trying to avoid the zombies. There's not one out there were they go "Rambo" and take them out.

They try to find ways around the zombies without getting spotted. That is stealth..It's when you make yourself openly available when zombies gather and/or swarm

I'm not sure if read my reply right but i'll explain.

Dawn of the Dead: Survivors hide in a farmhouse, as time passes a few zombies turns many.

Dawn of the Dead (remake). same as above, just in a mall.

maybe it's just me but it seems zombies have some innate ability to find you where ever you hide. I'll go further and say, for this game, the only way I see the stealth working is in the multiplayer, you're fighting creatures with only the lowest levels of brain function.

Dude I think you're confused at what stealth is.

If my memory serves me right, it was Night of the Living Dead in regards to hiding in the farm/cellar. Someone fired a gunshot in which that attracted the zombies attention. Even in the remake it wasn't until the biker gang I believe that attracted the attention there.

You're giving the zombies far too much credit. They only found people when something/somebody did something to make their location known.

Stealth is not hiding in one spot and waiting. Stealth is moving silently and secretly to go unnoticed to reach your goal and/or objective. You can kill via stealth which if you remember the sniper from the other roof top in the remake. Sniping is a form of stealth

not gonna argue, its not a great idea plain and simple.

slugga_status
slugga_status

No argument at all..Your view on stealth is extremely flawed. It is a great idea you have a medic, stealth guy, weapons guy, and your electronic tech. It's called a full squad…

Do I think this type of game fits in the RE universe no..But the core idea of what they're trying to do is right online for a squad based shooter.

Just sayin bro..what you should've just said is that you don't like stealth..But to say it doesn't belong is way off base

I was talking about games, in some games you don't need stealth. Unless it's absolutely necessary and if you don't you fail the mission. I'm sure someone will go through this game with guns blazing.

We haven't seen much of the game but i guarantee you don't need stealth, like the other RE games you don't need it. It's probably going to be the run of the mill shooter with zombies in it.

@ Clamedues

I agree with you that some games don't need stealth..but it really boils down to what type of game it is.

In regards to this game. I don't see how you could make such a guarantee. If they mention stealth then apparently they've got something in the game that will utilize stealth.

It doesn't seem as if they just threw it in for the hell of it. In some form you will utilize stealth. You also have to remember..this isn't going to be like any other RE…I wouldn't guarantee anything this early except I can guarantee a lot of us fans are disappointed with the direction of a new RE but only time will tell if this bad boy will be worth it

Clamedeus
Clamedeus

That's probably true, i probably shouldn't guarantee it because we don't have any info and you are probably right that it might come in use and they didn't just put it in for flash points or anything.

But i do agree that i am disappointed as well, i don't like the new direction they are going. I hope when they make RE6 they go back to the roots they were at in the past of making RE.

And i can't forget it also depends on the person as well of what style they play as, and what you mention as well the game type.

I'm just very concerned about RE I'm very passionate about it, and i don't want it to start to suck. I'm hoping this game could be good, but i don't know yet i feel like i might be just wishful and be disappointed in the results of it.

I realize I am slightly late to this argument but the stealth is probably so other humans don't see you, since from what I under stand some factions are actively trying to kill you.

Clamedeus

Ok, so I don't find this very interesting at all, just another good name put on a twitch spinoff.

But I do have a question related to RE. I really loved playing RE 4 on the wii, and am thinking RE5 Gold with move controls would be pretty sweet. My question is, does anyone know if the experiences are similar? I haven't tried RE5 at all yet, but I know it's pretty cheap now and if it's as much fun as 4 I would love to get it. Any help?

I can't see this game baing Canon if Leon dies, unless in RE6 he's dead too… WHY LEON, WHY NOT SHEVA >_<

killing off Leon would be the dumbest thing they could possibly do. Even dumber than the emo Dante

Even if you do kill Leon in this game. I highly doubt it would effect RE6 or the RE storyline period. Especially since this took place supposedly during RE2/RE3, which of course Leon survived. But as far as this game goes, ehh I'll just have to wait and see how it is. I don't have that much confidence in it tho seeing as slant six is working on it

MadPowerBomber

^ Considering the orginality of the story in RE games, that'd be about right XD

But seriously, why would you want to kill sheva? She's the best looking female character in gaming in my opinion 0_o.

Riku994

Sheva is useless and annoying and only in the series because Capcom didn't want people to keep calling them racist.

Oh my, this gotta be the saddest attempt at jumping on the multiplayer-bandwagon I've seen so far…
– "The game is too weak to succeed as a new IP so lets slap a well known label onto it and wrap it up!"

I shall eat my shorts if this game turns out to be a gem. And you may quote me on that.

i would have rather have a resident evil 1, 2 ,and 3 remake, with resident evil 4 and 5 concept put in to the games with out the co op ,as not to disrupt the original story but i am still interested how it would turn out doe
