You may be a little confused, and ask yourself "wait, didn't we already know that we'd be getting a Bionic Commando next-gen game?" The answer is yes. So what's Bionic Commando Rearmed? An actual remake of the original 8-bit game released 20 years ago. Where as Bionic Commando will be a full-fledged 3D adventure, this Rearmed remake will remain a 2D action side-scroller that'll debut on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live as a downloadable title this Spring.

The shooting and grappling mechanics will remain untouched in this remake, so don't worry about the game messing with your nostalgic memories. But, what Capcom will be doing is adding new weapons to the mix, which means you've got the ability to cause more damage. Additionally, a pair of gamers can come together and play Rearmed in 2 player co-op mode.

Capcom/GRIN will also be putting together a reworked soundtrack that'll be true to the original, yet will be greatly enhanced for the next-gen consoles. Furthermore, Rearmed will boast cross-game connections with the Bionic Commando sequel, as completing parts of Rearmed will unlock specific content and hints about the sequel. Some of the content will be character profiles with "secret insight", as well as the plot of the sequel.

What we're also excited about is the visual overhaul that the game will get. Capcom says that we won't getting a simple 2D/3D enhancement, but rather visuals that'll fit into the next-generation might of the PS3 and Xbox 360, by providing dynamic shadows, environmental damage, and beautiful particle effects. From what we've seen thus far, Bionic Commando Rearmed looks very nice, and we're anxiously waiting to try the game out. In addition to the visuals, the in-game art is penned by Toshiaki Mori.

My one question is whether or not Capcom will also include the original 8-bit Bionic Commando game that appeared on the NES. Typically, remakes get bundled with their original counterparts (Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, among others), so let's hope Capcom follows suit with the trend.

Look for Bionic Commando Rearmed to hit the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live May 2008, which is only six weeks away. More importantly, you'll be happy to know that the price-tag will be a mere $10, and the PS3 version will support PSP Remote Play.

Very cool!

2 player co-op similar to the old Contra games was always a total blast!
