Multiple studios have worked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 , including Sledgehammer Games.

And the studio's manager Glen Schofield reacts to the widespread supposition that this year's CoD entry will simply be more of the same.

In speaking to CVG , Schofield first answers questions concerning the length of the single-player campaign. After admitting he doesn't know how long the campaign is in Modern Warfare 3 , he comments about the percentage of people who actually finish the campaign:

"I don't know if we have scientific data, but I know that people have talked to me about it and have said it's pretty 50/50. One of the big differences is that we had numbers at EA… like 50 percent of the people that played a game, you know, went to level three, but finishing the game, like ten percent."

Then, when asked about CoD's perceived lack of innovation, Schofield has a lot to say. He says we can expect great character development and dialogue this time around, and although that isn't "innovative," per se, there are "huge urban environments" in MW3 with "different types of battles going on." Furthermore:

"And we've absolutely got new mechanics. We've got the XM25, which is a grenade launcher that's just being used right now. It's got a laser target. Let's say somebody's hiding behind a rock, you laser the rock, aim a metre above it and it blows everything up below. We're using a nine-bang instead of a flash-bang. That came right from Delta. They said 'We're not using flash bangs. We haven't been using flash bangs for years. We're using nine bangs.' We've got the dual scope, so you can switch between an EOtech and a red dot sight really quickly. It's so convenient.

There's also stuff I can't talk about. There's so much. The big moments are bigger than they ever were. We've got a new audio engine. We've upgraded the audio engine. You're hearing whizzes, bangs, which way they're coming from, how far they are. The sound is all around you, we really, really upgraded that."

He goes on to talk about all the stuff they've added to the multiplayer, too. So, are you buying this? Schofield's comments, I mean, not the game.

His comments do seem fair enough to me, and from the many Modern Warfare 3 videos I've seen, the game does seem to have a more "realistic" feel to it. So I believe him when he says they have new mechanics. But we'll have to wait and see just how "new" they are. I'm still getting the game, that multiplayer trailer a few months ago completely changed my mind (I wasn't going to get it at the time).

I'm also getting Battlefield 3. Gonna go pre-order it later. 😀

That pic is from Modern Warfare 2, by the way.

I'm impressed with the sound comments. The sound was the one thing that I was always impressed with in the last 2 CoD's released.

In terms of his arguments over "more of the same", I don't think he's really commenting on the "more of the same" issues I have. I don't care about the difference between a flash bang and a 9 bang… or which weapons are added. I want to know if animations like jumping over a barrier are going to prevent me from entering any actions. Do I have to completely pick up my gun before knifing someone?

I want to know which issues that have been around in the past have been fixed and won't be around in the future.

I never had a real issue with the features in the game. They're all fairly decent. It was game-breaking features that ruined the experience for me. Like quick scope glitching (caused by an auto-aim malfunction).

Looking forward to trying that Dual Scope in multiplayer. Should be fun!

lol, of all the things to look forward to in the game that's the one you're looking forward to?

As a matter of fact, yes. Hardcore will still be there, and since my gun won't change from MW2, that new scope sounds intriguing and right up my alley.

"of all the things to look forward to in the game", huh… ive seen it all before, in previous call of duty games. when the guy was asked about new mechanics, he talked about new guns and attachments and "stuff i cant talk about". its deception 101, lesson 1: change the subject and lesson 2: tell people you cant talk about it right now. its probably more about new killstreaks and perks. look at each "new" call of duty game, nothing has changed at all other than the top layer of perks, killstreaks, guns, and settings. also, infinity ward online support for the game was a joke, how long did it take them to patch ps3 online multiplayer when it was hacked?

johnld is onto something. Not sure why the downvotes. I said as much earlier.

The core idea and mechanics of the game are great fun… but he really didn't answer or address any of the issues I have when I talk about "more of the same".

gatchaman, i remember watching the anime way back then. of course in the philippines they called it G force. we actually had english dubbing then but now they dub anime in tagalog(filipino language) and it just seems/sounds wrong. granted english dubs already sound stupid.

This one looks better but unless they fix the sound and the ice skating feel of the controls it's a no go.

i can see it now, its an objective based game. then all of a sudden its raining grenades from noob tubes.

I actually thought the sound was it's only strong point, Jawk. I talked about it in my user review of MW2. With surround sound, I can tell where people are. Even if they are above or below me.

Oooo They added a gun and a few misc items. That's a game changer. Not. They are trying to breathe life into a dying breed, it's going down the path of Guitar Hero.. But hey maybe the guns won't sound like popcorn popping this time around.

you gotta admit, he has a point. a few guns and tweaks to the audio isnt a new mechanic, its the standard expectation from a sequel.

Nas, I'm sure MW3 will be tremendous fun, but it was pretty spectacular PR dancing that dude did. He didn't really answer the question… He certainly didn't tell me anything I wanted to know. I still have unanswered questions to the question, "What has changed? What has been fixed?"

Neither. Sure there may be some new things in there, but none of the COD games were able to recapture COD4's magic.

MW2 came close, but in the end, simply didn't. The story was out of control although the scenarios and overall intensity was good. The multiplayer was good, but out of control with the call streaks and weapons being way too overpowered with inferior level design.

WAW was fun, but wasn't as polished or as refined. It did not possess the intensity of COD4's campaign, nor did it do anything new in the multiplayer spectrum. Although it did play well.

BO had the worst campaign of any of these games. A boring, predictable story. The multiplayer is good, but the connection issues and bugs are atrocious and hamper the experience. As with MW2, the call streaks are way too overpowered and absurd.

I don't anything about Sledgehammer and to me, Infinity Ward without their original heads won't be able to match the power of COD4 and to a lesser extent MW2.

Basically, with each entry, COD has regressed.

I'm done with it.

With Uncharted 3 and Batman, games I'm pretty certain are going to be awesome and actually IMPROVE SUBSTANTIALLY on their previous efforts, I have no reason to get a game in which the last three installments have not been able to improve at all upon their previous entries.

twisted got the point right with U3 & batman… i never really liked any COD except the one on ps2, even COD4 never got me intrested…. & besides i like games where u have to do a bit of thinking rather than just running around knlfeing everyone

@Nas I Like: I hate cause I care, not for this game but for the video game industry. If you ask me, these guys are hurting the industry more than they are helping it by releasing the same game every year.

Oh my goodness! A new gun and a new sight! Holy crap! What a big addition.

But seriously, I don't think any gamer who knows that CoD is junk believes this crap. I've seen nothing new in this game so far except for that new sight and gun. Otherwise, its the same old schlock, albeit on a slightly bigger scale, with slightly better sound effects.

Oh, btw, Glen Schofield pulled those EA numbers out of his ass. He's a former EA employee; he worked at Visceral on Dead Space, and left because he felt EA was stifling his creativity or something like that. Then he goes to the biggest uncreative company in the industry, Acti, and starts to say how EA sucks. Predictable. Why did you go away from a good franchise like DS to work on CoD? Why oh why Glen?

i dont know about you guys but all i got from that was we'll give noob tubers a better noob tube so the other players who play have no place to hide anymore. theres 1 reason i stopped playing call of duty, its damn community. i hate glitchers, people who exploit lazy programming by devs, and noob tubers. and now you're telling me you're giving them an even better noob tube. i guess theres another reason why i'm not buying modern warfare 3. i guess they havent played the older call of duty games online at all huh.

It really doesn't seem like he's saying much. They added a few weapons, ok cool. So what?

Did they really do anything that necessitates a whole new installment? Or did they simply "update the roster?"

Personally, I'm a little tired of the yearly installments. Give me something NEW, I'm not paying $60 for new maps and another crummy single player campaign. Which, by-the-way, I played through in MW2. I didn't pick up Black Ops, but from what all my friends say about the issues they have with it, I'm glad I didn't bother.

I may skip this one too. We'll see.

You are absolutely right. All he mentioned was the same old usual call of duty stuff. "OH BOY DELTA FORCE WE GOT THAT IN". So they did a sound upgrade, big deal, there is nothing new in this as far as I can tell. I guess the two scope thing looks cool but give me a break. Def not worth $60.

i think this is going to surprise allot of people.
they have not showed much of the SP, but going off the E3 demo it looked really amazing!
i really do hope it has the big scale and openness the demo indicated.
i think this is going to be a big change from MW2, and in a good way.

That photo must be from MW2. It looks like that one building on one of MW2's multiplayer maps. The HUD is identical. There's no way that photo is of MW3.
