The world has gone Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 crazy. The games aren't out for about a month and yet, they dominate headlines.

But other highly anticipated titles, like Batman: Arkham City , The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception , Gears of War 3 , and Assassin's Creed: Revelations do manage to gain significant traction on a daily basis. It isn't too hard to find lots of articles based on these titles. And while there are indeed plenty of pieces with "RAGE" in the headline, it seems almost…downplayed.

I'm wondering if various factors are having an impact on the hype for id Software's newest game. First, let's start with the developers; it's their first production since 2004 and their claims to fame include names like Quake and DOOM . Iconic titles in this industry, yes, but also old . Unfortunately, with casual gamers and younger participants helping to push the industry forward, older franchises tend to fall on deaf ears. It's why we – and others – often worry about the upcoming Twisted Metal .

But also, military-based shooters definitely seem to be the norm these days. Shooters with fantastical concepts like RAGE that also infuse a bit of RPG-like depth may require too much time and dedication. Those who just want to run around and shoot things may be turned off by such a game. Then again, if we want to be optimistic, it's perhaps most similar to Borderlands , which did just fine on the sales charts. Still, I can't help but wonder why RAGE isn't getting a lot more attention. Can BF3 and MW3 really grab the entire spotlight?

Well, whatever. I'm goin' back to play more RAGE . There's a reason I'm doing that.

I think anyone who are fans of FPS games would be excited over this. Personally speaking, the game piqued my interest after seeing that gameplay video on an older article. Coming from a guy who hardly plays FPS games, that's a good thing.

Btw, is that gameplay video from a PC? I am hoping that the PS3 version of the game would be great. That's pretty much my only concern about it since iD software is primarily a PC developer and most of them struggle with the PS3.

@zeta

i share your concern about the ps3 version. this is a pc developer that has done nothing but whine about the limmitations of the ps3 for years. ofcourse i am speaking of john carmack. we all know what his favorite console is…i'll give you guys a hint. it's not the ps3 or the wii. id has assured us both versions will be the same so i am going to try to take them at their word until i hear differently.

i think the lack of attention can be explained since this is id's first console game this gen. id has a dedicated following in the pc crowd but console gamers are not that familar with id. that may explain the lack of attention.

rage will need great reviews to do well in sales. it still might not do well even with great reviews. resistance 3 had good reviews but it has been selling poorly. that gives me the impression that gamers are waiting on the big titles coming this fall. if it is a great game it would be a shame if does not do well. i got the impression earlier that ben has been pretty impressed by this game. he did not say that exactly but he did say rage has a lot to offer.

apparently it features large maps, rpg elements, and a lengthy sp campign. what more does hardcore gamer need? that sounds like a game that i would definitely be very interested in.

@ben

this is off topic. are you going to review the resident evil hd games? is rage so good you can't put it down? you don't have to answer the last question. i'm smart enough to figure it out.

There is no need for Resident Evil HD reviews. I can sum it up for you right now. They're not worth it unless you're a plus member. You get them half off if you are. If you're not, save your money. Crapcom dropped the ball when it came to doing HD remakes of those games. You're better off buying the God of War Origins Collection.

@jawk

thank you for the info. from your comments i can assume you were not very impressed with them. i am a plus member but i have played both games to death. if the hd coversions are not that good i guess i will hold off on them. i will say if they were actual disc based retail releases i probably would have bought them day1 just to add them to my collection.

i still think the hd remakes do warrant a review here. i would love to know what ben thinks about them. the soc and ico hd remakes were reviewed here so why not the re hd remakes? maybe ben thinks interest in the games are low or he could not get capcom to give him the games. who knows? there are some other upcoming hd remakes that i hope are covered here as well. the mgs hd collection, and the silent hill hd collections. i hope these are covered here.

btw jawk i did read your user review of peacewalker and i thought you did a great job. maybe you can review the re hd remakes too.

Speaking of user reviews, I really think they should get more focus on the front page. Some sort of "latest user reviews" info box or something would be nice.

I think RE4 warrants the $10 admission, especially if you're a fan of the game like I am. It's not a terrible HD remake. Just not a good one. After playing some of the HD remakes Sony has put out, Capcom really slacked off. They obviously didn't care beyond making a few extra bucks. Their trophy list for both games is utterly pathetic too. All in all RE4 is worth getting if your a plus member but maybe not Code Veronica.

Thank you by the way for the complement. I also did a review for Ghost of Sparta. If you like God of War at all that one might be worth a read aswell. Maybe if I can find the time and Ben doesn't review the RE remakes I'll try and do one for RE4 at least. 🙂

I bought both RE HD ports and I'm happy with both of them though Jawk is right, Capcom did a very poor job. I love RECV, I must have beat it a dozen times on Dreamcast and I think it still looks great. I prefer the old RE controls and the music and oh gawd…just everything about it.

If you're a fan of RE before it sucked (RE5) then I suggest picking them up. If you're only interested in a true HD port then you won't like them.

I was excited about it when it was first announced.

However after I saw some gameplay a two E3s ago I lost interest in it. It just didn't seem that appealing to me in action.

I am excited about Rage except it comes out on the same day as Dark Souls :(. It's not in my preliminary purchases. Dark Souls, Batman AC, BF3, U3 and Skyrim. I am still figuring out how I am going to get them all D1P. As of now, I don't see how financially I can do this. Wow, I am really sad right now!

If you liked Demon's Soul's I'd opt for Dark Soul's instead. Seeing as how there has been an over saturation of FPS's this gen and only two games like Dark Soul's.

I agree with you, Dark Souls is so unique. Not to worry though 🙂 I have already preordered it like 6 months ago! 🙂 I cannot wait to see what they did and how the Demon's Souls universe has evolved. I know it's going to be tough, but I am just aching to see it for myself!

Please think before you post, Id won't steer us wrong. They have so much riding on this game. They need to show the world that they are more than DOOM and Quake. They know how to do it and I am confident this will be much much more than a standard FPS.

Rage, Skyrim and UC3 are all on my must! buy! list.

This is from long ago but I still find it funny:

I guess a comment where Chuck Norris was saying that critics were biatching about the latest movie effort and a close friend at the party asks if the movie made money?? and Chuck Norris says yep! Lone Wolf made plenty of dollars.

So then the friend tells Chuck to tell the critics to have a coke and a smile and to shut the hell up since the only thing that counts is if it made a profit then thats the only critical factor that counts.

If Rage gets plenty of sales then thats the only excitement it needs.

@russel

your comments made me lmao. i thought of a catchy advertisement. RAGE the CHUCK NORRIS of videogames.

sales are the final word in terms of excitement. if people are excited about this game they will buy it. what i think ben is getting at is there does seem to be some lack of attention/buzz regarding rage. this could translate in to poor rage sales. rage has been in development for quite awhile. it will probably need a lot of sales to make a profit.

i will say i think this game is going to turn out great, and it might surprise a lot of people.

Rage is going to own just about every shooter that's due out this year. That said, I am glad it's not receiving the hype the other shooters are receiving. Hype tends to ruin games for a lot of people.

Hype seems to spoil just about anything if you let it. A great many of movies and records have been spoiled for me because a friend or coworker swore them to be the greatest things ever.

Beamboom

Me too! That's happened *so* many times. Even rave reviews, in particular music reviews for some reason, has spoiled it for me. Cause no matter how good the album is it's still "just" music made by human beings. It's never out of this world.

And speaking of that, was it you that mentioned the poor cgi effects in District 9 a while back? I've finally gotten the blu-ray with norwegian subtitles at a decent price now, and yeah, that was surprisingly bad! In fact the entire movie were much less than I expected.

If this game turns out to be outstanding then this will be the THIRD game in a ROW this autumn that I've underestimated. That has never happened before for as long as I can remember. This is a *fantastic* year for gaming!

Regarding the question in the headline of this article, there simply are too many quality FPS being released nowadays. It's too much! I can't understand anything else than that this will backlash at some point, with developers seeing other multi-million fps productions being more or less ignored by the market, thinking "oh shit that's big money down the drain – if that didn't cut it then let's make our next project anything *but* another fps!".

Cause really, I do not mind fps at all but I can only handle so much. And everyones eyes are on the upcoming clash of the giants these days.

yea it definitely is thats because they have not released a game in so long!
allot of people dont even know who id are for crying out loud!
i cant wait for it, i just hope for once i can get a PC game on launch and it actually works!
hopefully there will be a SLI profile for it too.
otherwise im seriously thinking of selling my PC and putting it towards a new car.
im sick of buying PC games on launch and not being able to play them for weeks!
i dont have the time nor the patience to f*ck around trying to get it working properly!
RFA is still a unplayable mess, how many months after release?

I may be alone in this, but I've been interested- more and more as time's gone on- with Rage, while being very much uninterested in the whole MW3/ BF3 circus. Consiquently, the hype thing for me feels opposite. I've read every bit of Rage and Dark Souls hype I could find and all but ignored the "big 3's". I've got both preordered on PS3 and am confident they'll both be fantastic.

DOOM is a staple that'll never leave the public eye. Whether it's carried on with an awful movie, mod tools, or rumours of the 4th entry, DOOM is always in gamers view.
Not to mention the fact that it still is probably the biggest phenomenon in western gaming history, back in '93, that game was bigger than life, it was a cultural phenomenon….because of that, it won't disappear from public eye…even my woman knows of it.

So, Rage should be BIG priority. I have my doubts and fears, but whatever, it's motherfuggin ID Software!

Xmas purchase/gift for me as i have my self fixated on a lot of other games at the moment. One week to go for Dark Souls!!

Everyone has heard of "Citizen Kane," too. Doesn't mean everyone is rushing out to rent anything in black-and-white made by Orson Welles.

Classics will always be classics. Modern popularity is a very different story.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

The thing is Ben, that Citizen Kane doesn't get the appreciation of the current generation, that post Gen Y group that is now up-and-coming. It was bad enough for the Gen Y people, but it's even worse now. It moves too slowly and isn't color, two major hits against it.

Lotus,

You'd be surprised by how many people have never, ever heard of DOOM, either back in the 90's or today. More have heard of GTA and Hot Coffee though. DOOM has a huge place in my heart, especially now as the supposed uber-violence of the game was completely cartoon by today's standards. I found it laughable then, and now that anyone thought the game was dangerous.About the most dangerous thing about the game was playing it on one computer with a group of friends taking turns, You'd be playing one of the first game's levels, can't remember which one, but you were creeping around a darkened computer center, and Imps were around every corner, you could only see them at the last moment. Well, it was quite amusing (at the time) to poke your friend in the ribs after they'd spent 10 minutes creeping around listneing to the monsters in the dark, just as they rounded a corner into a fresh Imp…. They yell quite high pitched, and jump about a foot out of their seat if you time it right.

Lotusflow3r
Lotusflow3r

Quite right, Ben.

But that wasn't the point i'm making, i was just pointing out DOOMS solidified fame that should never fade as opposed to just looking at it as "old" when, for the reasons above, it will always be something else….and it should always resonate with ID's future products and keep them alive, but how much so is, i agree, up for debate. A lot of people know DOOM and don't know ID. Not everyone looks at developer credits. So it is a hard situation to crack and answer.

High,

Oh believe me, i miss the days and still play DOOM to this day. It's laughable, BUT the quirkyness of it makes it STILL stand up against games today and that is what a lot of games miss today, they try to be too realistic and thus the fun/addiction is lost. Only few modern shooters have been able to usher in that quirkyness today, i'd nominate TimeSplitters 1 & 2 as the best examples….but that was PS2. Serious Sam 3 has a chance, i mean, it won't be a DOOM by any means, but hopefully that quirkyness returns. It should of been Duke Nukem that brings it back, but i'm betting on the Gearbox production to be the one that justifies the Duke in modern gaming.

I don't think it has much to do with BF3 or MW3. Just think there's a ton of quality games out or coming out. They all have to whatever attention is left after the mentioned BF3/MW3 info/articles come out.

Personally I want it but it'll have to wait. I've already got money tied up in pre-orders for MGS HD, Uncharted 3, Silent Hill HD, Batman AC, and still have to pick up Gears 3.

I think Rage is getting the publicity it needs. I've seen commericals for it and most def read about it. And it seems that Ben really really likes it, which has piqued my interest in it more than a commerical could. Unfortunately I'm going to have to wait on this one. I just finished Resistance 3 (now on to the multiplayer), am half way through Gears 3, and still have Ico/SotC in shrink wrap. Rage and Battlefield 3 will have to be purchased at a much later date.

clockwyzebkny
clockwyzebkny

I've said this time and time again. One of the biggest problems with quality games like Rage isn't the game itself but the timing of when it comes

Within the next 2 months or so, there's going to be a myriad of quality games. Gamers, as always have different preferences. But some games because of familiarity, or continuity, or hype will garner more attention. I have my must have list. In order it's Saints Row the 3rd, Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, MW3 and Batman Archam City. But there's plenty of other games like Skyrim, Rage, Assassin's Creed, NBA2K12 etc that will be released in the whole cluster in this year's holiday season.

These past couple of months there's been what I've seen as a drought in the video game department. I feel like if Resistance 3 was released earlier, it would have sold better. IDK that's just IMHO.
