When Resistance 3 launched, we warned everyone that the game didn't appear to be selling very well .
And after learning that Insomniac's new shooter only shifted around 275,000 copies, we're wondering if this marks the end of the stellar series. We've always thought the franchise never received the respect it deserved, although some critics have certainly gotten behind it this generation. The problem is that given the awesome arsenal, excellent pacing, and story-driven campaign, we're looking at a fantastic product that gamers aren't really buying. And hence, the designers haven't been justly rewarded.
When that happens, things usually have to change. Therefore, we're thinking Insomniac may continue on with Ratchet & Clank but may have to explore new IP options, both for the remainder of the PlayStation 3 lifespan and the upcoming new generation. Or they might focus on making an installment for the PlayStation Vita; Sony is pushing their new portable very hard, and the capabilities of that handheld device would be appealing to the Resistance makers. But right now, the future is very much uncertain and we find that depressing. Wouldn't it be great to see Resistance 4 as a debut PlayStation 4 title?
For some reason Resistance just didn't click with me. It felt more like a chore to play without too much of a good story, for me. Even though I am not a big fan, I am still sad to see it not sell well! =[

just stop complaining and play resistance 3.
Fall of Man was a little chorey, R2 was a blast and R3 sounds top quality with it's 9s.
the first 2 clicked with me …but after playing the multiplayer beta …i was digusted lmaooo didn't feel like resistance anymore
Resistance did not have a good story? Granted I never played the games, I was under the impression that Resistance actually has one of the best written stories among FPS games. I'm personally intrigued by its alternate history setting.
It's just what I took away from it. I really enjoyed the setting and atmosphere, but it did not feel fun to me. I was planning on buying R3 anyways just so I could support the developers, but I found out I couldn't because of all the other games coming out unfortunately. I wish I was made of money.
I'm not trying to complain, just stating my opinion like everyone else. I know I'm most likely in the minority when I say I disliked the Resistance series. =]
Not a good story??, a man who lefts everything and put his life in risk fighting some aliens to get his son a normal life is not a good story??, maybe looks good to me because I could do the same for my kid.
I see lots of Resistance 3 haters over here
@Nlayer
I kinda know what you mean about the story, it never kinda stuck with me. Its sad that R3 isn't doing to well, I love the first one with all my heart, but I have a strong dislike for the 2nd one. I want to play the 3rd one but I'm broke and saving my money for U3 and BF3.
If anything I believe the reason this game sold badly was because of the timing
i think it was just a bad release section, its within in a month of bf3 and campers warfare 3 and uncharted 3, that means that theres going to be alot of competition with money 🙁
i would get, but i dont have money, only getting bf3 cause i preordered and has a $50 gift card, if theres room maybe
I haven't played Resistance accept for the demos, but it is very disappointing to hear this news. This product was supposed to have won the hearts and minds of the exclusive elites of PS3 gamers.
Unsurprisingly, there may be a "mix" of reasons that could have caused this. A few that come to mind are, the economic situation for one, and the fact that in a months time, Battlefield 3 releases.
Economically we are at a point where gamers are being careful what they buy, making sly choices and trying to make their dollar go far. Even PlayStation 3 owners are astute now, looking at maybe picking up 1 or 2 really good AAA titles on day one, and then waiting for other titles ti drop in price 6 months later to fill out their back catalogue collections.
Personally I would love to go out and buy everything, but it ain't going to happen. Price points are too high and gamers are making astitute choices now in the face of the heavy weight shooters coming out that are, MW3 and Battlefield 3. Sadly Killzone 3 and Resistance 3 have both suffered, and technically they are the class of the show.
I think it is going to get tougher and tougher for developers and only the very "best" will survive, with timing and I.P development choice being a very important factor today.
I don't want to really say this, but I am inclined to feel that the 360 has also contributed to gaming becoming a "cheap" hollywood experience, something I think Sony never wanted to pursue. It's sad really. Sony wanted to keep high standards, and are trying to do so in the face of the complete destruction of originality which made gaming great in the past…
Sony is still pushing, still trying, but without love from its loyal supporters, it will find it increasingly difficult to mature the gaming market in a direction that would be best for all… fun, but intellectual gaming, with strong original I.P.s that do not conform to the COD scourge….
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
Dang it.
Well, perhaps that 275K will push itself up over a million by the end of the year. I'm hoping so anyway.
That my feeling.
It is only week 1 sales, and there's a long way to go yet.
I hope so, Insomniac really deservs it
I guess I might play it when the price reaches a resasonable range for me
they don't deserve anything with that game!
@ lupus
Have you played resistance besides the beta??
Is it just me, or has pretty much all of Lupus' posts been bashing Ps3 exclusives?
I never cared until he bashes one of my favorite devs
My guess is he's just another dolt whos only purpose on this sure is to spread negativity. What do u wanna bet him and underscore guy are Xbox fanboy haters in disguise.
I had to pass. Too many other games I want.
There's just too many. Too too many.
If you don't detest fps's, and you had to get one, R3 is an excellent "chimera" of all of 'em. It has the intensity of KZ, the versatility of Crysis 2, mp elements of COD, and an sp comparable with HL. Hey, I loved the game as a Ratchet fan. I'm not feeling the mp as much as I do in KZ3, but the sp was definitely more exciting…though both left something to be desired in the finales, easily forgivable in light of everything else.
But, to each his/her own.
I know theres too many games coming, but damn we are talking about Insomniac, it's resistance man, one of the good boys, think about it.
You buy it for me?? =D
Shure, if you pay the shipping charges 😛
I have to agree with Claire
That's too sad. I really like the Resistance series as a story and game. But at the same time, I have not seen a single person on my friends list put in R3. Too bad.
Stay Classy PSX…I like scotch. Scotch, scotch, scotch. Down into my belly.
That's awful, so much for high scores and quality selling games. I really dig Resistance but the fact is the setting isn't what people are after, it's all about current military warfare right now. People have no imagination any more so they can't connect with theoretical alternate sci fi history.
I think Insomniac needs to move on.

My feelings exactly Word. The shooter genre is cornered and it's just too hard to break away from the norm and find success.
I'm a little worried for Insomniac as a whole, I doubt their next multiplat will sell that well either… I'm betting on a Sony "intervention" by the middle of next year the latest… Will be nice to finally have them as a 1st Party Studio.
That's the problem with FPS games these days. It's one military shooter after another. Whatever happened to the good old days of games like Turok selling well blasting shit to pieces with the Chronoscepter! Bwahhhhhh!
I'm not so sure… Deus Ex HR? Crysis 2? Killzone 3? Mass Effect 2? All those have a sci-fi theme, futuristic story, and are released this year? Granted they are not all FPS of course, but still?
I'm really just saying Resistance's alternate sci fi history isn't all that appealing to the modern warfare crowd. Things like Crysis and Halo that go all out with technology are big for different reasons, mainly the futuristic tech. Resistance is World War II on sci fi crack. I like it a lot, but I don't think it's connecting with the mass audience.
As far as insomniac goes, I think their multiplat project is going to bomb. Nobody is in the market for that kind of project right now.
Aaah yes then I am totally with you. Yeah it's very much "old times meets future times" sort of deal, with regular normal human beings. It's different that way, yes. But man… That's *soul*!
I really hope that's not the main problem here. That'd be… Sad!

I did my part. I got it day one as an Insomniac fan, and was not disappointed. Coincidentally, I'm not from the COD/Battlefield crowd, but from the minority. Naturally, sales are going to reflect that, no matter how beefed up marketing gets.
aren't you guys forgetting that when it came out, the multiplayer has major frame rate issues and lag. Don't you think that could've affected sales? I'm just pointing that out. Not only that, Resistance could've been affected by the people who were waiting for better releases for this season.
Maybe no one wants it because there is a better lineup of single player games and multiplayer games coming out through the remainder of the year.
I just purchased Dead Island and Deus Ex: Human Revolution and will be buying Rage, NBA2K12, and Uncharted. While I would love to have R3, I have put it on the bottom of my priority list as a result of the other great games coming out in fall 2011.
Yeah, well, Dead Island really shouldn't be ahead of Resistance 3 on any priority list, IMO.
but the fact that it is speaks volumes…
If R3 falls behind DI in priority it must be because of one thing and one thing only: FPS-fatigue.
The only reason that Dead Island is outselling Resistance 3 is because A. it's a multiplat and B. it's a zombie game and people are on a zombie craze…
I wouldnt say that, I too believe it is FPS-fatigue.. people love FPS games, thats a given, but R3 is just the same old fruit.
DI is different enough, fresh enough for people to enjoy… and its glitched to hell, yet people love it. The zombie theme helps, also helps that we dont have L4D on the PS3, but its everything else that DI does that R3 doesn't that makes it popular. that tells me that people just want something different.
im a lil disappointed in R3 that it doesn't bring anything new to the table, after taking a year out.. I think most expected something fresher, but instead they reduced online players, and just made everything 'nice' ..the graphics weren't ground breaking, online wasn't ground breaking, story was good.. control was good.. its a great apple.
but its not the greatest apple, and quite frankly we are all waiting for that come late Oct and/or Nov for our BF3/ CoD fix.
Part of the reason is that there is so many great games this year most people have to pick and choose (especially with a ps3, SO many good exclusives)
I hope they keep making resistance games
That would be sad. Resistance is my favorite series this generation. I really don't want to have to part with it.
I think it's mainly due to the combination of a struggling economy and a crowded market. Or in other words there's just too much stuff coming out and not enough money to go around. So by all accounts it's not the game's fault. The game is just a victim of circumstance.
But all things considered there is probably a decent chance that Sony and Insomniac are going to decide to retire the franchise, at least for a while. I know that some people don't want to hear that but all things considered it actually does make sense. First of all, Insomniac already has plenty of other stuff on it's plate with Ratchet and Clank as well as their new upcoming IP called Overstrike. And on top of that as I understand it the ending of Resistance 3 pretty much wraps up the overarching story of the IP and doesn't leave the door open for a continuation anyway.
So as I said for better or worse retiring the franchise does make a lot of sense at this point.
I bought it day one
A shame, but I was never too excited about the series as a whole. The market really is oversaturated in this area and in the end that might be the biggest contributing factor. I will get it but I still need to play through the 1st 2 first. Not every game has to make up the brunt of its sales in the initial week.
You left out another big part of why it didn't sell, it has PSN Pass. That's why I didn't get it.
Irrelevant. If u bought it new u get the pass anyway. Hardly a reason to skip out on playing it.
