Back in July, we expressed concern for the sales potential of Insomniac's Resistance 3 .
At the time, we didn't question the game's potential quality; that turned out prophetic as we say the latest Resistance entry is a fantastic game . However, the sales concerns may have been justified:
When I wandered into GameStop today, I noticed they had plenty of copies of Resistance 3 . After asking if the game was selling, I was told they hadn't sold more than two copies all day, and fewer than expected since the game's launch last Tuesday. This made me go home and place a few calls to other GameStop locations and although not all were willing to talk about sales, a few talkative employees said they noticed a smaller-than-expected turnout for what we assumed was a highly anticipated shooter. Furthermore, it seems the pre-owned total wasn't all that impressive, either.
Lastly, it wasn't difficult to find a whole lot of available copies at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target, which may not be a good sign. Hopefully, all those who wanted the game got it last week and Sony has resupplied retailers. Still, we're getting the sneaking suspicion that indeed, shooter fans are holding out for Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 , while other gamers are simply saving their cash for the big-time fall rush. Oh, and although most critics don't place Dead Island on the same level of quality, the fact that Techland's entertaining title released on the same day as Resistance 3 could've been problematic.
But maybe we'll see some good sales numbers despite these unfortunate signs. You can't go by a handful of retailers…can you?

I bought mine opening day and have really enjoyed it. Awesome multiplayer, very fun single player (although it was too short and the ending was weak sauce to me, and wasn't as emotionally charged as it couldn't be. Some great emotional moments though).
R3 deserves to be selling better than it is if what you're saying is right Ben. Best shooter I've played this year.
Game is awesome

I wonder if the PSN Pass has something slightly to do with this scenario….
I don't undertand why that would stop anyone from buying it

That certainly stopped me from even thinking about buying it.
I know of a ton of people that didn't buy it because of the PSN pass thing, but even so with all the games in november i wouldnt have expected that much sales anyway.
speaking of that playstation pass, where is it? medal of honor had a slip and so did homefront but i dont see a number anywhere in R3.
It was in the case. It downloads a file that can be purchased in the playstation store. So that means that you cant lend the game to a friend to let them try multiplayer (well you can but it is a hassle)
It's on the back of the instruction booklet.
oh lol ok i see it now
i just find it stupid, my opinion by the way, when people refuse to buy a game because of an online pass. if you're buying the game new anyway, there should be no problem. it comes with the new purchase so you dont miss out on anything. i dont really mind the online pass since i usually buy new anyway because i want to reward good developers for their hard work.
I did buy it new so no problem for me, but its another thing to mess with and worry about. Its no big deal at the moment but its a direction that could definitely make the video games a pain to anyone who doesn't pirate them.
plus makes it a hassle to lend the game to friends.
i dont see it as much of a hassle. whats wrong with taking a couple of minutes to redeem a code? i do that when i redeem my preorder bonus. i can see the problem with lending it to a friend though but with the current situation, it doesnt seem like a big deal anymore. in the ps2 days you bring the game to play multiplayer but today you can play multiplayer online. besides if you were going to lend it to someone indefinitely, $10 bucks shouldnt be that bad of a price. if your friend really liked it then he has the option to buy used and he can still play onine. if he didnt like it, at least he played through the whole campaign and online for just $10, kinda like renting a game really. of course this is only if your friend borrowed from you instead of a rental place.
johnld, even though the online pass wouln't effect them as they are buying new, they don't make the purchase on principle and I applaud that.
I've supported plenty of causes which don't have any effect on me but I support them because of the unfair impact it will have on others. I would never take the view "it doesn't effect me so I don't care."
That's a stupid reason not to buy a game!!
i just beat the game a couple of hours ago and i could only come up with one complaint, sometimes it was either way to difficult to see my objective marker or it just wasnt there so i would find myself just wandering until i stumbled onto my objective.
though i loved resistance 2, resistance 3 was to me amazing, from beginning to end and the ending for me was much better than the second game. the final battle in R2 was kinda dissapointing for me.
There is way too many games out there I think Resistance 3 picked the wrong date to come out. To be honest, I really didn't want Resistance 3 to come out until April of next year, since competition isn't though then, but it'll waste money for the publisher.
But don't get me wrong the game is very good, just picked a bad time to launch.
I went into BestBuy today to get WKC2 and had to inform multiple workers there that it came out today. I finally got someone willing to look in the back for me and sure enough they had forgot to stock it that morning. This situation made me feel like my style of gaming is truly dying. I highly doubt they'd forget to stock the latest mash button FPS for the 360.
R3 and the entire series seems interesting to me but I'm put off by it being a FPS and I do think there is far more variety on the PS3 so it never has caught on the way Sony hoped.
i was in the same boat. i went in early in the morning and the guy told me the game didnt arrive yet. but since i had a $30 best buy gift card, i went back a little bit after. they still had the game in the boxes but i managed to get my copy. good thing is i didnt preorder but i still got the preorder bonus.
also when the guy asked me what i thought about the first game, i told him that wkc2 comes with the first game. the guy actually bought the first game and never got around to play it and didnt know wkc2 came with a remastered version of the first game.
That is so sad LV. What is wrong with people these days?
Nothings wrong with them, they're just not interested and alot of retailers must assume as much as well!
Ha LV, I had the same story when I went to get it back when it released here. The tool at the store told me that it wouldn't release until September. I went around the corner to another store that happened to have it in stock, bought it, went back to the first store and told him that in future he should listen to his customers when they show conviction.
I blame it on… him being an idiot.

There's something wrong with people not being interested and retailers not doing their job.
So because someone isn't interested in my favorite sport: Basketball…I should label them weird. Come on man, lets be logical here. There's nothing weird about me not being interested in JRPG's just like it isn't weird for you to be interested in them.
Now the retailers part is dead on. It's a business, how do you forget to stock a game?!?…I had the same problem when I went to go get DA2 from gamestop.
I preordered mine the day it was announced, picked it up the day it was available and finished it on Thursday. I am convinced people who choose COD or Battlefield over this just don't like fun.
I don't like console FPS so I went with BF3, a series I'd marry and have sex with.
Well PC junkies are excluded I suppose 🙂
i can understand if you said that about people who pass on resistance for cod but to lump battlefield in that is just wrong. battlefield is a completely different beast and passing on a shooter for it is certainly understandable. COD on the other hand is the same game every year and most of the cod community is just a pain to play with.
LV is a trisexual. He'll try anything!
Don't like fun?…No, not enough money to buy everything released just to say I bought them.
I hope R3 probably at least got a lot of pre-orders.
I know I had put it both, in the forum, & here on the main page earlier that Newegg had it going for $47.97 if pre-ordered for a limited time.
@biker
nice deal, i saw that too on cheapassgamer. however, i would pay attention to kmart deals because those are getting better and better. pretty much all of their games for ps3/360 would come with a $20 gaming coupon and maybe a little more extra. i'm hearing that theres going to be a really good deal on batman arkham city, so far a free shirt is all thats revealed. my plan is get batman, use the gaming coupon from batman to buy battlefield the following week, then use the gaming coupon from battlefield to buy uncharted 3. those game are pretty much guaranteed to have at least a $20 gaming coupon each. they had a $20 gaming coupon for both resistance and deus ex too. its why i usually get my games from kmart now.
I bought R3 and Dead Island at K-Mart so I had $40 in gaming cash to use. I was going to pick up GOW: Origins today but none of the 3 stores in my area even got it in. It pisses me off too because it's in the ad as being available today. Dead Island was a hard one to find there too. Each store only got in 1 copy.
Also if you get GoW: Origins at K-Mart this week they are giving $15 in gaming cash.
the thing they dont tell you about those gaming coupons, you cant use it your $40 on a 39.99 game. it has to be the same amount of your gaming coupon before tax. you might have to buy something else like a $10 psn card or something.
i had to pass on resistance because white knight chronicles releases the following week and with me JRPG beats any FPS anyday. it seemed like a waste to buy a game at full price when i'll be playing and getting lost in a different game the following week.
Maybe if they didn't have bugs and framerate drops in the online play, this wouldn't of happened. Not only that Resistance 3 story seemed a bit rushed and didn't have as epic boss battles as Resistance 2 did. Not only that, not a lot of variety in multiplayer, same modes that I've seen in other games.
Almost every online game has the same modes nowadays. I haven't had any issues with the online and have been enjoying the SP.
like the majority of gamers im holding on to my hard earned cash for the fall. resistance 3 will be mine once it becomes greatest hits.
Man I hope it does well, those high review scores SHOULD help but I get the feeling Insomniac might start to move away from Resistance if it doesn't sell well.
I want them to move away from it and if possible come back to it later on. I want to see something new from them.
They've said it's the end of their role as custodians of the Resistance universe. Sony should definitely find a developer that is competent if they want to continue it. Maybe Nihilistic will prove themselves with Burning Skies.
shame really, its extremely fun. Single player is wicked, and the multiplayer is fast and fun. could do without some of the hiccups that will be patched eventually. Lack of match making for the co op is probably about the only real negative i have about the game
Who didn't see this coming. With so many popular games coming out October and November, gamers had to save their money including myself. Just pre-paid for BF3 today with 4 other games already paid for, thus I fall into the group thats holding out. R3 looks good and I will definitely rent it, but with the expenses that come with life and being a student…I can't afford to just spend money on games I dont truly need.
I'd heard it was an overly short single player and as I missed R2, the story continuity would have lost some of the draw for me. I might still pick it up when I can get it at a price justified by the single player element alone.
My bro works at wal-mart he said they actually cant keep this game on the shelves cause it cont to sell. I think why this game didn't sell what people were expecting cause it could be due to the psn pass.
The dude behind the counter when I picked it up was amped that I was buying it, saying that he couldn't wait to play it. Then he said that he couldn't yet because he only had a 360. I laughed.
Besides that, there were a few copies missing from the shelf when I picked it up, maybe three or four. I don't think it'll be a big seller in the end.
not surprising.
there has not exactly been much hype for the game, the lacklustre showings at E3 and such, the buggy as hell beta, the buggy as hell demo, the no demo on PSN, and the online pass have not exactly helped.
hell R3 has been out for a week now, and out of EB merrylands, JBHIFI, Kmart, target and DSE put together it has sold a record breaking 15 units!
DI on the other hand i could not find any copies today i wanted to try it on ps3 to see if it really was as buggy as people are saying but neither of the stores listed above had either the ps3, 360 or even pc version in stock!
they had a full shelf for R3 though.
O, not to mention DI released 3 days later on the friday where R3 released early on the tuesday.
apparently harvey norman broke the street date on monday so everyone else decided to sell it on tuesday.
I never made it past resistance 1 thought it was pretty weak as far as FPS go
It is a good game and deserves to be recognized as such, although I have to say:
I'm right at the end of the game now, and in retrospect I think the game begins good – *really* good – but then gradually degrades more and more into a fairly standard fps. Sadly.
It starts off as something truly unique, something that could have been a hell of a "road movie", two men travelling from one side of the country to the other across uncharted territory, just lovely!
But then it gradually disintegrate into this loosely chained, typical fps "theme park" experience complete with zombie maps and such nonsense.
The entire storyline changes into more or less just "excuses for action sequences".
Of course you may say that this is how things usually are, yes it is action games in a nutshell, but still… It *started* so good, so promising!
And then it turns into "just another fps". Such a shame.

No idea what you're talking about.
