Here's a title you haven't heard about for a while. And you've never heard it associated with PlayStation.
After Half-Life spent some time wowing the world, Valve produced Counter-Strike , a fast-paced military FPS that became an online phenomenon. We haven't seen anything since the last update – Counter-Strike: Source in 2004 – so obviously, a new entry is long past due.
But perhaps you didn't expect it to be downloadable. Valve has announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive , which is slated to hit the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) early next year. This new effort will include new game modes, weapons, maps, and characters and of course, it'll be the franchise's first appearance on either the PSN or XBLA. Players will even get the chance to sample updated versions of original Counter-Strike maps including de_dust and others. Valve says the popular series has sold over 25 million units since it first showed up in 1999…but you can bet everyone is anxiously awaiting a Half-Life 3 announcement.
Global Offensive is being developed in two locations, actually: Valve Software and Hidden Path Entertainment, which co-developed Counter-Strike: Source . We'll have to see how this digital installment turns out.
