For a while now, we've only had Top Spin and Virtua Tennis . But EA Sports needs an offering, don't they?
Today, EA has announced Grand Slam Tennis 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 version will support the PlayStation Move controller, and the game will boast all four Grand Slam championships, including Wimbledon. The latter is significant because neither of the established franchises mentioned above managed to get the Wimbledon license. Said Line Producer Thomas Singleton:
"We are very excited to bring the EA SPORTS Grand Slam® Tennis franchise to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms and leverage the graphical power of these high definition consoles. Players will now get to experience the excitement and drama of serving it up on prestigious tennis venues such as Wimbledon’s famed Centre Court."
Various gameplay features include all-new Total Racquet Control (via the right analog stick), the challenging Become a Champion mode (win all four Grand Slam tournaments in succession), Legends of Now and Then (everyone from Federer and Nadal to Borg and McEnroe), and perhaps the most realistic presentation yet:
Professional, Realistic, Organic (P.R.O.). AI : The playing styles and behaviors of the sport’s greatest stars are captured right down to their signature swings and emotional reactions. Realistic tactics and strategies are your keys to success against each legend whether playing on hard court, clay or grass. The organic artificial intelligence adapts to your game so there’s never a dull moment!
While I'm a fan of Top Spin , I keep thinking the sport needs one more boost to push it over the top into true simulation territory. Maybe Grand Slam Tennis 2 will accomplish that feat; look for it some time next year.
