Uncharted Movie Close To Signing A New Director

The "Uncharted" film has been in need of a director ever since David O. Russell made an early exit.

Well, it didn't take too long to find someone new to take the helm- according to The Hollywood Reporter , Neil Burger ("The Illusionist," "Limitless") is in "final negotiations" to adopt the role of writer and director for the Drake movie. However, we're not sure if Mark Wahlberg – initially slated to be the leading man – still wants to do the project; after all, he and Russell have a solid history. Wahlberg starred in "The Fighter" and "Three Kings," both of which were directed by Russell. As for any other details, everything remains sort of murky and not much has been officially confirmed. We just hope Burger keeps to the script originally penned by Naughty Dog some time ago.

As you might recall, Russell departed due to "creative differences" and based on interviews we heard with him, he had a…bizarre take on the Uncharted plot.

So, Wahlberg might not be in still? This is the part where the fans campaign for Fillion once again and I'm left as the lone soul campaigning for Justin Bartha to take the role. Let the discussion begin…

Never heard of him

The hangover, National Treasure, just to name a few. He normally plays the geeky guy or the guy stuck on a roof. I can't really see him as nate though.

The guy that was the one getting married? He only had like 4 lines in the movie so I can't gauge his comedic personality enough to know if I'd support him.

He's good too… National treasure are great portrayals of him…

justin bartha has just the right look but he doesnt exactly play adventure characters, if he did do this and were to pull it off well he would be in a new position in hollywood besides a good geek actor

o russel is a good director that had close ties to wahlberg. i didn't like his appoach to uncharted. the whole treasure hunter family thing was somewhat of a turnoff. who knows? he may have been able to pull it off.

the illusionist was a decent movie, but it wasn't anything spectacular. i'm curious about where the movie goes now. are the using the same scripts? are they recasting? need more info before i can really judge. does anybody know what the budget for this movie is?

@danny

i don't think fillion is a big enough name for this movie. it really needs some star power to put people in the seats. who knows? anything is possible. according to the hollywood reporter the story is about drake discovering some lost city while facing a rival treasure hunter. they encounter mutations that are decendents of spainards and wait for it….NAZIS.

since we are on the subject of game based movies i must say the 3d in resident evil afterlife is great. the part where that creature from re5 throws that axe almost made me freak. the production values in that movie are great. it was actually shot with the avatar system. that's why it looks so good.

No, star power is what will ruin this film.

Well, that would be the plot of the original game… 😀

Russell seemed to want to turn Drake into a member of a treasure hunting crime family. Yes, crime family.

I'll kind of echo Worlds, I think Fillion would work well precisely because he won't overshadow the movie.

Fillion is the best choice hands down… He's, he's witty, comical, and lighthearted, but still a bad ass. No other actor fits this role better.

Also as highland pointed out that plot sounds oddly familiar… O yeah we've played it in the first Uncharted.

As much as I love Fillion, I don't think movie-goers will care. All the large population likes are big name actors. And ones that are hot. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried cramming Shia Labeouf as Drake. That would be odd…

Fillion is perfect, and I reckon having a star studded cast surrounding Fillion will be what gets big crowds. Robert De Niro as Sully, Jennifer Aniston as Elena, Kiera Knightley as Chloe, Ralph Fiennes as Harry Flynn….

The rest of the cast may not be perfect, but so long as Fillion is Drake for the fans, I don't care what big stars they have cast for all the other characters!!!!

star power is without a doubt not needed. it needs to be a solid film that is carried by good actors, not brand name actors. not saying any of the major actors are bad, but its not always necessary.
the actors of the 3 main characters in the harry potter series where pretty much unheard of before harry potter. the films succeeded because it was written well, its a solid film and the actors where good. in the same way uncharted has such potential, so it doesnt need big actors.

oh but im putting my money on this being a massive c0ck up, if anyone was wondering

As long as this guy doesn't start taking crazy ideas about the film like Russel I can at least remain optimistic now. The fact that he left over "creative differences" just tells you that he was for sure on a crazy path with it. Two words for you idiots in Hollywood SOURCE MATERIAL. It's important.

I say this new guy, whether he plays games or not, must be forced to get through Uncharteds 1 and 2 and maybe 3 before he is allowed to sign on. He'll see there isn't much that needs changing, just a new story with familiar characters. We need a good casting director too, like Papsidera.

I personally think any director at ND could make this film. Or whoever directed the live comic series anyways. The games are brilliantly written and directed as was the mini live comic series!

I enjoyed The Illusionist quite a bit, and have heard some good things about Limitless. I hope everything works out with the Uncharted movie. Sounds like it may. Fingers crossed. 😛

Limitless was a very well directed movie. Burger did some cool camera effects to show the effects of the experimental drug. Stylish and awesome, but not without its flaws.

once again great comments posted above. i guess i misunsterstood the arcticle in the hollywood reporter about the story. i thought it was a synopsis of the movie script. i have not played uc1 very much.

anyways, casting and story will be important. the whole crime family thing seemed kind of weird for an uc movie, but o russel has made some good movies. i still don't see them going with fillion if this a big budget production. they will want a bigger name tied to the project. that's just how hollywood works.

Jurassic Park pulled it off without Tom Cruise.

@world

that's a good point. no i'm not expecting tom cruise or brad pitt. that would overshadow the production. jurassic park still had good casting and decent actors in it imo.

i actually did some research and found an article in variety that says wahlberg is probably out, and now limitless star bradley cooper is strong possibility.

If he got his hair cut he'd be perfect. Can't be wearing the 1980's haircut anymore worn by Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams.

Next to Fillion, Bradley Cooper would definitely be my second choice, plus, with Limitless and Hangover being pretty big, he's in his prime right now so I reckon it'd be more than likely Cooper will be playing Drake than Fillion. As much as I love Fillion and his work, I reckon Cooper has more star power.

Beamboom

Bradley Cooper… Of course! Wow that'll be the perfect pick imo. He'd be excellent for this kind of movie. And he looks like Drake too!

I never got comfortable with the thought of Wahlberg in this role, I was afraid this movie would be too lightweight for him. This demise of Russell may turn for the better for this movie!

Nathan Fillion. It just has to be!! The fans demand it, and this movie should be more for the Uncharted fans than average movie-goer.

But, Hollywood wants big actors to go with their big budget Hollywood flicks. If not Fillion, at least make it Bradley Cooper.

Here's hoping Neil Burger can make a movie that sticks more to the original story from the games. I'm glad O'Russell is out, no one seemed too happy with his direction, and Sony made a good call by finding someone else.

awwwww, can we just put this to bed?
why prolong the torture, either get it over with or put it to bed!
NO game should be turned into a movie, im still trying to wipe the nightmare DOOM was!
theres a reason why everyone started hating the rock after that movie!

TheHighlander

The trouble there is that DOOM – as a game – has a plot that can be written in one short sentence – You're in space marine hell, kill everything. There are no other characters, no interplay, no story or goal, nothing except killing everything you meet. I could see that DOOM was doomed as a movie from about 500 miles away, it had none of the elements required to make a movie, except action. Uncharted is a vastly different animal.

I just hope whatever they do stays close to what Uncharted is. As long as the cast actors who will give the respective roles justice I don't care who stars in it. This could be a movie for to introduce a up and coming actor..

I still say you guys are hyping yourselves up for disappointment. Uncharted does not need some half-ass live action adaptation, it was fine just being a game.

For all this Nathan Fillion talk you all very well know he's not gonna get that part they're gonna go find some semi-big name actor to draw in a crowd, hell the way Hollywood works I wouldn't be surprised one bit if they through Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in there somewhere.

Now can this be a success, of course it can, and while fans of the games will most likely end up disappointed moviegoers won't they're probably like it. I will probably end being as popular as the Resident Evil movies which gross more money with each installment.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

I don't think anyone is hyping up anything. I think we all can agree it's just fine as a game. But as people passionate about the games, if they are doing a movie we might as well voice our thought.

Here my thoughts.
Nathan Drake= Nathan Fillion
Elena Fisher= Emily Rose
Chloe Frazier= Keira Knightly
Sully= Robert Di Nero
This would be an epic cast.

either way i don't like games that get turned into movies, and movies made into games it's just not natural. It always ends with some thing making the other seem dumb and I do NOT want marky mark playing Nathan Drake.
