Making a video game is a long, complicated process. Original concepts don't always end up making the cut, even if they're initially approved.

The Uncharted franchise is arguably the best new franchise of the generation; it began with Drake's Fortune back in 2007 – which got nowhere near enough attention due to the small number of PlayStation 3 units in the world – and will continue with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception on November 1.

Those who did play the first title will remember lush forests, supremely detailed jungle and cave settings, and even a few industrial areas. However, according to Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells, the game was originally going to be very, very different . Yep, it would've taken place in an underwater facility (very much like Bioshock ) and in fact, the idea was even accepted by Sony.

Well, things change. The question is, do you think it would've been just as good in the original setting? Or did they make the right move by changing their minds?

Do you guys struggle with the match making? I can wait forever until the games begin (located in northern Europe)!

Have had no connection problems so far here in Australia. Bit of lag now and then, and a tonne of glitches, but the beta is pretty solid here.

If it was a little more polished like the Gears 3 beta, I would honestly say it's more fun than the Gears 3 beta. Love the vertical takedowns and medic rescues, just sooooo much more fun than most MP games I play.

Here's hoping the final product will be far more polished and playable for many of you.

Yeah the game itself runs like a charm now, it's the matchmaking prior to the game that is an issue, before you enter a session. Sometimes I wait and wait and wait, like I'm the only one online at the moment – something that's obviously not the case.

It really depends, sometimes I get in a game as soon as I hit that Matchmaking for TDM or what ever I feel like playing, sometimes I have to wait but not for very long.

Although I did have to wait for awhile when I first started playing it.

Well I love the way it is so I guess I'm glad they changed it…but it's hard to say for sure.

I guess we'll never know for sure how good it would have been. But then again, it's Naughty Dog, so…

Hmm, they could make a game by that and just call it something different with new characters, I wonder how that would do.

It does seem interesting. I love Uncharted so I'm glad they did what they did. But inside I wonder what it would be like if they didn't make that choice.

If Uncharted 3 is the last in the series (or this storyline), I'm looking forward to seeing what Naughty Dog are planning for the PS4!!

In 2014 of course. My PS3 is still going strong! (knocks on wood)

You aren't the only one! I can't wait to see what they have in store for us. I love Uncharted a lot.

Uncharted can't be in a closed environment completely. It coulda been great but lacks that original panache that only Bioshock can pull off in Rapture.

I feel stupid when I remember that the original demo didn't do anything for me. But you have to remember I was coming straight from the PS2 days when I played straight JRPGs and shunned most shooters.

I was similar, World. I didn't get around to it until just before UC:2 came out.

You guys are buggin. That game was something special to look at when it first came out

Special to look at for sure, but you never got a sense of its epicness from the demo

Maybe the demo wasn't that good, but finding Uncharted 1 half price and seeing how incredible the lush jungles and environments looked while climbing around crumbling structures and playing through incredible chase scenes… I was sold.

Then Uncharted 2 came out and pushed epic storytelling and action sequences to a whole new level. Gears 3 and Infamous 2 went with bigger monsters, Uncharted 3 is going with intense survival in a shifting environment (the boat sinking fight scene, anyone?)

I prefer Naughty Dog's style. Bigger enemies isn't always better. Epic Games seem to think so. 🙂

I like both so it all works out in the end for me, I like big boss fights, and epic storytelling like Uncharted provides.

I used to watch Indiana Jones A LOT when I was younger I always liked treasure hunting movies and video games it's a big plus in my book.

If it stayed in that setting then I guess we'd be seeing Bioshock and Uncharted comparisons instead of Uncharted and Gears of War. But there would not much to compare between Uncharted and Bioshock except the setting. Different perspective and gameplay and they both would be available in the PS3.

They made the right move in all honesty. But all this proves is that ND has great ideas that will be accepted by Sony!

Hey anybody else notice the guy other than Drake and Sully in the beta looks a bit like The Electric Man?

I think that if Uncharted were under water it would still be *very* different from BioShock. They'd be incomparable. Uncharted would still be a more traditional action/explorer movie style game.
Personally I would love it if it had an underwater theme, imagine diver equipment, beautiful reefs, sea life…

Yeah I'd definitely prefer that to the much more standard (and in my PERSONAL opinion, less exciting) "adventurer in exotic surroundings" formula it ended up having.

As far as I can recall there's never been any diver games, ever? I think that must be one helluva setting for a game! Finding treasures, all the gorgeous views, get air refills to continue the search, etc… Perfect!

i think ND made the right choice. if they were to have put in an underwater level in, i think that could have worked.

I think ND made the right decision to go with lush jungles and temples. Much more varied and interactive environment that played to their advantage in terms of physics.

BTW, Uncharted 2 was the only game I saw where water effects were done perfectly. Where the water touched Drake was the part that got wet and created a darker stain in his clothes AND clung to his skin. Like rolling through a puddle, his back gets wet but his front stays dry. THAT really impressed me!!

hmmmmmm uncharted under water, now that would be interesting.
kinda would of been hard to have the style gameplay they have now, especially the platforming.
would be a interesting to explore though, maybe the new IP launch title for the ps4.

Differently a good decision changing there minds.

I don't see how it being underwater would of worked. Jungles, towns, deserts and snowy mountain tops. FTW!

I know the only things I will be getting in maybe all of Oct., Nov., and Dec., will be MGS HD collections and U3(both coming in NOV. Going to be a good holiday season.
Now, What will Sony do for the PS3? price drop? new models? who knows. All I know is Sony is freaking Awesome! 🙂
