What’s Your Take On The Tweaked Uncharted 3 Mechanics?

Now that the Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception beta test appears to be running a little smoother, another piece of controversy has arisen.

Naughty Dog has clearly changed a few things in regards to the gameplay mechanics in the multiplayer action, and while some love the alterations, others are skeptical.

For the most part, the single-player campaign will likely play very much like Among Thieves , but the developers have gone out of their way to overhaul the multiplayer aspect and the question is: for better or for worse? We maintain that Uncharted is all about the memorable single-player experience and in all honesty, we're not even sure it needs multiplayer, but hey…few games are allowed into the world without that feature, right? So if you've sampled the beta, what's your take on the matter? Did you like Uncharted 2 multiplayer better? Or is this a definite upgrade? Don't be afraid to speak up!

Oh, and if anyone still needs a code, I have a few left.

For me I'm not liking how the Ak-47 fires slowly now. Plus, I'm not liking how the cross hairs have changed either. It makes the game seem less realistic when more crosshairs appear in my opinion. It reminded me of COD. Uncharted is known for its realism and the super natural elements they have added such as the "Creepy Crawler Kickback" does not fit into the game IMO, but I love the customization features they added.

Honestly the multiplayer in the Uncharted 3 beta reminded me a lot of 007 Bloodstone. Maybe it was just me.

So, I would have to say it changed for the worse and that I liked Uncharted 2's multiplayer better. I know this is just a beta and the point of it is to get feedback, so here it is Naughty Dog.

Haven't experienced the creepy crawlers yet, but it does sound out of place.

The beta does feel a little heavy, or sluggish, but I think that is more the nature of a beta than anything else.

The AK-47 works fine for me, as long as it kills I don't care about the sound, to me it sounds pretty good. I didn't find the movement sluggish it did what I wanted it to do and that's all I need.

The cross-hairs didn't bother me.

I think the Beta plays alot better after the update, but I liked the faster feel to the U2 multiplayer.

I played the U2 multiplayer as soon as a I finished the SP but I didn't like it, but I can say that after spending two nights with some friends playing the U3 beta, I know I'll be playing it more.

It has some hitches and glitches, but hey it's a beta, so I know they will fix most of them, for when the game ships. Co-op Arena is great for leveling up with some friends, but you really need to have a mic or what i found out that works great the PS Eye, for communication, you'll need it, specially in the later rounds. Team Deathmatch is very entertaining and easly fun with friends, I like the Power Plays but they don't help too much, as for the other modes, haven't play them.

Only another problem it has is the melee sistem, sometimes it works but man when you need it the most your character just flings into the air like a lunatic( well if you keep pressing square) jaja. Overall good Beta.

Yeah the distances at which the melees actually register are a bit inconsistent for me sometimes.. But man do I love it when I get a melee kill from behind, "Oh Snap" indeed! lol 🙂

Haven't really gotten too many matches in but the game feels kind of clunky IMO. Might be due to the fact that I rarely ever play Uncharted. Not that it's bad…on the contrary, it's fantastic. Still once I get through a single player campaign for a game like Uncharted, I'm usually done.

As a side not…is there any info about what kind of aliasing U3 is using. I heard rumors that they ditched MLAA due to the constraints of the Cell and the need for that extra room being that U3 is a very physics intensive game. I hear that they are going for FXAA2 possibly 3?

Just wondering because the beta had some jaggies on the air strip while the chateau was somewhat blurry (the blurriness is probably coming from the FXAA2 implemented). Still looks great for being multiplayer.

I like the new feel of it compared to UC2's fast/light feeling. The guns also have more impact which is nice, but guns like the AK-47 and a few other rifles are slow-firing while others seem to either be non-lethal or inaccurate. That was very noticable and very frustrating. And I hope the graphics end up looking better. In the end, I still don't see myself playing UC3 online for more than a week like UC2. I hope co-op missions are part of the final product because that was my favorite part from UC2 online.

AK-47 may have a slow rate of fire (perhaps a booster later speeds it up?) but it has stopping power. I haven't found a problem with the other weapons, although I have found that the enemies can shred you with gunfire far faster than you can shred them.

i prefer U2s multi better (as of now, i just started on U3) U3 feels very heavy and kinda slow, both with the guns and simply running around, i find it takes forever to get anywhere in the maps and another little thing is that the kickbacks seem a little out of place in this game, it may not have a realistic story line but the gameplay usually stays pretty realistic and the hole spider thing seems out of place.

im pretty sure all of this has been said before and probably debated but this is my persional opinion

EDIT: and i find the cutscenes, while good for breaking it up a little, are out of place and almost as if they took it from KZ3s operations

I haven't gotten too many matches in. I only played like 2 game of co-op arena. But, like Danny007 complain about the AK-47 and the crosshairs has me bummed out. In U2, I was a beast with AK and it definitely shoots completely different in the beta. Those crosshairs are horrible and hope they go back to the original ones.

I know its a beta and all but it does feel very clunky compared to U2 multiplayer. But overall, I'm having fun with it and can't wait to get some time with it over the weekend.

So far I am liking it. The extra weight feels good to me. The first made it too frantic and more a lucky kill kinda game. The weapon upgrades are a nice touch. Adds to that achievement and progress feel.

As far as the kickbacks and such I'm still a little up in the air about. For the most part they seem subtle. I've tried some out and they can help but they don't seem overpowering. That is the key. As long as they are just a nice small "boost", than they won't really break the game. It's not like people are calling mortar strikes on you and there is nothing you can do about it.
I may be biased since I already pre-ordered, but I must say I am really enjoying it so far.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I really like the heavy feel of this, and i really love the amount of customization. I think its a great mic between the addictive call of duty leveling and customization and the uncharted and killzone slower, less twitchy gameplay. I also think that the smg that is upgraded at level 15 or so is overpowered.

Also the co-op is much improved over uc2. I only wish that i can play just siege, just gold rush and just survival liked in uc2. I like how it changes things up a bit, sort of like the killzone online, with the changing gamemodes, but i also want it like Killzone where i can play just deathmatch if i choose to.

Other than the little hitches here and there (especially having to restart my PS3 everytime I quit the game 🙁 ), I must say I'm having an absolute blast with the beta… everything from the weapons, sprinting and health I'm finding to be quite reasonable and doesn't irk me at all. But mind you I didn't really play much of the U2 multiplayer, so all the differences in gameplay that the vets have been pointing out and dissaproving of about on the ND forums I'm not finding too much of a problem..

And I'm not doing too bad in it either which is always a plus, lol 🙂

I'm loving it. I loved the U2 MP and put in over 30 days of play time but I already think U3's multiplayer is a lot better.

Co-op Arena kind of sucks now and I hope they make some changes to get it closer to the intensity of U2 like removing the time limit, but just about everything else is awesome. I hope they manage to achieve their goal of being the go-to online title for PS3.

Understand that people who spend a lot of time with a game tend to HATE when it changes, especially people on the internet.

Anyone who thinks U2 multiplayer was more fun and/or better than U3 please pull your heads out of your asses or better yet put it back in and stfu. This is going to be one of the MOST balanced and robust shooters in the market and will probably nab GOTY again. Comon slugging it out on top of moving trucks trying to get on a moving plane online is one of the most epic moments in online gaming. Add the dynamically changing game modes and levels. I also appreciate the fact that while some ideas were take from games like cod (perks and customizations) and kz3 (dynamically changing game modes) the experience is still uncharted. Most games out now just straight out cookie cut copy cod. GJ naughty dog your on track on nabbing your second GOTY 🙂

I swear theres nothing really to complain about yet other then the fact i wish you can spend more time chasing the plane on the runway b4 you arrive at the airfield. Theres no online multiplayer game out there that has map set pieces online like that, lag free and ZERO drop in framerate. NO ONE, not mw3, gears3, bad company3, halo 4, NOTHING. And god only knows thats only one of many that haven't been revealed yet till november omg…

All I know is I held my own (not great but okay) whenever I played U2 MP, but I got slaughtered last night.

It didn't help that the teams were mismatched: total levels roughly 60 versus about 10. We didn't have a chance.

I am enjoying the beta very much. As for people complaining about the creepy crawlers I am assuming the play a role in the main campaign. They actually show them during the trailer. I like the heavier feel of it and people can't do their crappy bunny hops like on U2. They slowed down the rolling and jumping which I gotta say is great. I dont think people can bunny hop like U2 in real life.

This is a definite improvement over U2s multiplayer. The guns have a good kick on them unlike 2. But either way if you wanna complain about features please go to the naughty dog forums. They'll definitely add improvements to it.

The UZI is way to powerful, so irritating.

Apart from that, I prefer it to UC2 I just hope they have similar co-op missions like they did in the first.

There is a lot of differences, little things I'm noticing. But none are necessarily for better or worse. It's preference I suppose. The weight of the characters is so realistic it's pretty amazing, but it is a difference from U2. I Suspect that when we see the final product the overall game will feel more at home regardless what changes they do or do not make.

Overall it seems to me most people are enjoying it, even the newcomers. So that's saying something. Especially since there was a huge amount of frustration the first day of the beta. But that's why it's a beta, one problem down on to the next step in the process.

The reason people aren't likening to it is because they're expecting to love it straight away. Any game you need to get into (especially if its multi) before you realise its potential. I remember playing the second and never knew you could even climb (this was before I ever even played an uncharted). I've played for 2 days straight on the beta and it is absolutely mesmerising. The tactics in 2v2v2 is so broad; wanna go into every battle back to back? How about one goes through the front and one from the back? I swear I had so much fun with my friend last night, we had pretty deep tactics so whenever we died we got extremly dissapointed lol. One thing I LOVE is the (re)-re-vamped climbing mechanic. While it's a tad un-responsive (I'm sure it'll be all good come release; btw not sure if you've seen my reply in the previous UC3 article- I had some explaining to do lol) when climbing up walls, its subperb when jumping off. You get such a sense of vertigo…it's AWESOME! And Tbh practically every new upgrade is nigh-on perfect; even the kickbacks which I hated at first sight; they are wonderfully balanced, minus the multi-nade one. I however don't care much for power plays, they do feel out of place. Few long post, in contention for my longest ever one, sorry if I drippled on abit haha 😛

Yea. 2v2v2 is great fun with a good friend!
The buddy systems works well even with random people.
In UC2 Multi I was either running around for weapon pick ups, or ran to a 'good spot', the rest was pretty much chaos. I never got that feeling in 2v2v2. There where always hotspots and you had to think about how to be there and get points without dying.
I haven't played the normal Team Death match so much, and I am not sure about power plays as well. Do they always help the team thats behind in points?

If you look at some beta vids from UC2, you'll see it was exactly the same. I mean just look at the water effects! (I'm talking about the very first beta btw; think it wa sorted in the 2nd released beta.)

Not to mention that at this stage of development only thing they'll be doing is making sure the game is playable; that's what happens during alpha and beta stages. When that's done they will go into the polishing stage; ND would never release a game that isnt pixel-perfect!

from what works ive enjoyed it.
the competitive needs a filter to have you playing against people of your rank, but besides that and the RIDICULOUS lag its pretty good.
still prefer the co-op, just so much fun collecting the treasure and hurling it around the map.
just need more incentives to actually do the objectives, almost every match ive been in everyone ignores them and just kills everyone!

I played it last night, I still just go around punching people. it just works so well. As for the game though, it seems very solid just like the last one, giveing players uncharted's fuild control system on a game online is just fantastic.

One problem I have is with the character creation, it's a big flaw in many CC's set ups in games….the hair, well the lack of it rather, you can only play as bald men…. What can i say, I like my locks.

no one mentioned sprinting so i guess i will. i think the sprinting speed is fine i just want some more control, i think the turning should be a little tighter but thats just my opinion. hopefully we get custom crosshairs for anyone that want it differently. wish they add more weapon mods, not too much of a fan of the AK's need to select rapid fire at level 12 (guessed) while i think all other main weapons fire at max from the get go. a speed reload for all main weapons could be something I'd use too. other than that it fun as hell and i cant think of anything else that no one else has said. Please to not add mines, i have enough hassle with mines in other game, people droping mines/claymores in bushes on a main path and other shenanigans like that.

So far the Beta has been great! I can't really tell if I actually love the added "weight" to the movement though. For one I'm NOT a fan of the much slower diving. It feels like your doing a somersault in place, honestly. I do however like how you can't jump 10 feet anymore like in UC2. The sprinting is also kind of clunky, I hope that they make the controls more tighter because it feels like the "roadie run" from Gears of War. It's not necessarily a bad thing but I've come to like Uncharted for the "lighter" feel to it.

The melee should be turned down a bit because as of right now its way too powerful. Its so easy to sneak up on someone (not even necessarily from behind) and take them out with a melee. Either that or make the guns feel more powerful. Maybe its because I've been playing Socom 4 for so long, but it seems that the guns fire at a much slower rate, and are a lot less powerful than they were in Uncharted 2. Anyone else notice this?

As far as the powerplays go, I LOVE them. Such a good idea. I think that they'll have to tweak when they become activated though. My team went up 13-8 and the other team got a power play. I mean, thats not really a "blow out" that early in the match. But in any event its a great idea and it seems to work well. Maybe offer modes that don't have them as well? Like a "Standard" (with them) and "Classic" (without) just to appease any "hardcore" online enthusiasts.

Only thing I miss is being able to use my handguns more, they really underpowered those over the long range guns. Otherwise, I'm still having a blast, and I like that they made this game different enough to where I could go back and still enjoy UC2.
