The Tomb Raider reboot really turned a lot of heads at E3 and we have to admit, we're excited for this re-imagining of Lara Croft.

If you want to learn more, check out a Q&A with creative director Noah Hughes over at the PlayStation Blog . He talks about the overall setting and feel, several of the new mechanics (including this new detective-like ability of Lara's and the climbing axe), and how Hitman: Absolution developers IO Interactive acted as an inspiration. As for the character redesign, Hughes said:

"Rather than change her for change’s sake, we just decided to make her as real as we could. Everything then kind of came out of that – the character design, the story we were telling, the whole look of the game. We really tried to ground that in a human experience. That was the starting point.

You can see that once you start down the road of bringing her to life, it can influence so much of the rest of the game. So, yes, she is, but that was the result of the changes we made, not the cause."

The more we see and hear about this game, the more intrigued we become. While the gameplay shown at E3 certainly didn't measure up to that amazing CG trailer, it still looked pretty damn good. And we've already given Lara the Best Character Overhaul Award . Yeah, we made it up.

Hmm… I like the sound of this, by going for that more realistic Lara, they are giving the series a real reboot. I don't know enough about the movie 127 Hours to know what they think they're getting from it. I just hope that they don't push the realism and pain to bleak levels that extract the fun and pleasure from elements of the game. I doubt that will happen, though, it seems like they are taking the inspiration for the visual style and broad character and plot elements.

That detective-like intuition ability sounds almost like a sort of 'Spidey sense' for Lara. Sounds like fun

This could be a very interesting title, especially for those that remember Lara as little more than a cartoon character.

I don't mind this newer younger "more real" Lara. Though aside from Lara's naturally gifted physique from prior games, I didn't think Lara was "fake."
I thought she had a believable personality and was confident of herself.
Hopefully by "real" they don't turn her into some head case with problems from her past bringing her down.

Aside from that, I like the production values going into this new game. The E3 presentation was surprisingly exciting. Though, I just hope they stay true to many of Lara's foundational design components from the past. I really don't want the game to become an interactive action movie.

This reboot reminds me more and more of the James Bond reboot, where he was changed into a more real person in a more realistic world. And that movie turned out to be the best James Bond movie ever made, so…

… Plus, the rebooted Lara is simply damn cute.

The best game of E3 IMO, I have never really been a Tomb Raider fan before, but this certainly has caught my attention. The fact is TR can't beat Uncharted, so i approve of this new route.

What u say?
If u mean TR couldn't beat Uncharted as it was so it needs to change in order to "beat it" I say they should set you up the bomb.

*shudders* Underworld… Ugh

I just have my doubts concerning Crystal Dynamics. They made a promising debut with Legends, but anniversary was ported like crap to 360… How does that cause slow down?
And then Underworld was a glitchfest with problems in just about every area imaginable.

I really want to like the TR games more than I do. Why can't they tighten up the quality?
I say that is in much more need than a rebooted image.
All of this publicity about this new Lara won't amount to much if we get another game that has many technical issues.

Damn Right if its crap it'll likely be the end for crystal D handling TR.

I doubt that Canuckman. I mean, the company is now owned by Square-Enix, and they just don't seem to learn from their mistakes…

Also, it's funny… they go for a "real" look, and go figure… she's now much more attractive than Angelina. Not that I personally find that difficult.

I've played the first 3 and then somehow I just lost interest in TR. Hopefully this reboot will get me to like TR again.

Ever since Core was relieved of Tomb Raider the franchise have been going on downward spiral. With that in mind, rather than trying to reboot the series what Square Enix should've done was reinstate the original team/directors(and I'm not talking Toby Gard, who have been wrongly assigned credit for the series, especially as its creator) since they know to deliver a real/classic tomb raider experience.

That's not how I remembered it. The series was on a downward spiral out of the gate. I loved the first game but each subsequent TR release kept disappointing me for a variety of reasons. Legends was a surprising come back but ultimately was less of a "tomb raiding" experience, good nonetheless.
As it stands the TR games are one of the few core gamer franchises that sells well even with poor reviews.

I'm really liking where this is going. I rarely find my self going out buying games. This year it's 100% Yes that I am picking up U3 and the MGS HD Collection. I want to pick up BF3 as well. Oh and TM.but other then that…
Next year I know I'm getting TR.

P.S. I will also be getting Madden NFL 12. I'm a big football fine and love playing for my school. The sad thing is that Madden is the best out there. It ant that good… :/

P.S.S. Happy gaming!

"That's not how I remembered it. The series was on a downward spiral out of the gate."

If there was anything to complain about when it came to the Core developed games it was the pace of their release and a few control issues. Beyond that there was never anything wrong remotely wrong with the games.

As said though, Square Enix to put the original team/directors back in the driver seat because they knew how to deliver a TR game. In fact even till this very day I'm still playing the olders games+expansions.

I really like everything I'm hearing about this new Tomb Raider, except that there doesn't seem to be too much information about tomb raiding. So far it seems to be all about survival and exploration. Not that that's a bad thing. I'm really putting a lot of stock in this one, because I think that it genuinely has promise.
Peace.
