Tomb Raider Trailer Makes A Very Strong Statement

The games that we all expected to make a big splash at E3 certainly did so. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception was undoubtedly the class of the show in our eyes.

But wait. There's something else brewing at Crystal Dynamics; it involves a young Lara Croft and a name we all remember from yesteryear: Tomb Raider . While we see no gameplay in this stunning trailer, we have to admit that it exudes slickness and technical achievement.

We're going to have to wait for gameplay footage before we allow ourselves to get super psyched but from what we see here, there's plenty of reason to be excited. We're not only liking the awesome presentation, but we're also drawn to the premise and concept. Usually, prequels are sort of contrived but this one really has plenty of potential.

Aside from the tons of screen tearing that is a really cool trailer, there was some gameplay at E3 but it was on 360 so maybe that's why it isn't up here.

This reboot has my attention for sure, so long as it gets rid of everything that's been wrong with the series for a long time.

But where are her collagen lip injections? Lara needs her big lips back.

I'm pretty sure the tearing is all Youtube's fault. Theres no way a pre-rendered scene would tear, its not really possible.

It is really beautiful though, even for a pre-rendered piece.

I hated her big lips. I don't like girls who look like Steven Tyler. She looks gorgeous now.

She's looking pretty good in that trailer. I hope they let her get cleaned up at some point during the story. Would be a shame to have to have her going around all bloodied up for ten hours.

Anyway, nice trailer. If the game tanks then Crystal Dynamics definitely has a shot at movie making.

Yeah the gameplay for Tomb Raider looked pretty standard multiplat visually, but that's not the worst thing in the world.

I want to see how this reboot plans to change the combat for Tomb Raider. I've never played any but from what I've seen, there all auto-target based, and I think guns should always be aimed by the player, it's just not as engaging otherwise. Then again, I don't think this franchise is focused on combat anyway, so it could work either way.

I hope there is a little more focus on combat now and that they take a hint from Uncharted for it. And, as cool as dinosaurs are, since Lara is looking more realistic they should probably leave the dinosaurs out of this one to keep the realism thing going.

As I can agree that the trailer does look quite good, I am getting tired of many people comparing this to you guessed it, Uncharted. Some of the platforming does look a bit awkward but I like the direction they have taken the new title.

The survival horror-esk style really appeals to me, and it should really bring the series to new levels of immersion. IMO they are two completely different games and am looked forward to Uncharted 3 more.

Yea, talk about awkward platforming. I don't know a single person who can jump across a chasm/gap with a torch in their hand and get a firm enough grip to hoist themselves up. I know it is a video game, but if you're going for realistic, that is a glaring issue imo. It would have been better to have some sort of light clipped to her body somehow that would cast shadows and provide dynamic lighting when she jumps. Now where she got the light and how it survives her dip in the water is another issue all together.
Another option would be to have her be able to throw/toss the torch and then pick it up again after the jump was made. Of course, this may slow down the gameplay some, so I understand there has to be a balance.

One of the titles that definatley caught my attention this go round. They certainly have alot of potential in their hands, just hope they don't screw it up.

Uncharted 3 will be a better game obviously, But this has to be in my top 5 games of the year. I'm thinking MGS HD Collection has the number one spot.
Any ways I'm really liking this game, It looks like it has nothing to do with tombs and raiding them so the name doesn't fit it but it still looks like it will be a great game.
Waiting for Gameplay.

who said uncharted cant be done on the 360!?
was really impressed by the E3 demo, one of the VERY few games shown at E3 that actually looked really good!
out of the whole show, this ME3 and far cry 3 were the only games that lived up to expectations and or exceeded them.
especially this and ME3.
this i was not expecting much from, but it looks amazing!
ME3 i have always been expecting allot from, but seeing the E3 demos just made me want it all that much more!

I agree on all points there, but you sir are treading dangerous waters now. 😀

But yeah, Far Cry 3 and the obvious GOTY 2012 are both my favorites too.
Laura Croft *looked* good but also looked very linear. Although even I can handle some linearity when the task is to guide a babe through danger. 🙂

@Beamboom

ha! i think you and porkchop have been blasted for your critiques of uncharted in the past. i think uncharted is a good series, but like any game it has flaws. it's always been a little too linear to my liking. for a game with uncharted in its name it's kind of ironic it has zero exploration in it.

uh-oh it looks like i may have strayed into dangerous waters.

this trailer is pretty impressive. i'll keep an eye on this game.

whats new?
😉
only reason why we have not seen uncharted like graphics on the 360 yet is because devs have not been trying to, all the 360 exclusives have been running off tired old engines.
now developers are starting to create new engines were starting to see both shine!

i do like uncharted, only thing id like to see added to it is a proper non cliche story, take it away from the typical Hollywood Michael Bay flick.
and inject some history into it!
best part of infamous 2, it tries to continue the story of cole and the beast, but it also fills in gaps of what happened in the first game, and how events and characters in 2 know or effected you in the original.
makes it feel like a real universe, and not just 2 separate flies picked out of 2 separate garbage cans!

as for the new TR i like its linearity.
i think theres a reason for it too, the games no longer a TPS IGN actually put it perfectly its more like a survival horror game.
big bad men are after you, and your the poor helpless little girl!
i like this new take on the series, gives a real sense of occasion and drama.
that pretty much forces linearity.

Hmmm… Now that you put it that way, you got me interested too. This may be my very first "real" Lara Croft game (not counting the psp game).

Plus, I *did* enjoy Resident Evil 5 despite the extreme linearity, but then again we were two in coop, and that pretty much makes anything fun.

you basically HAD to be in co-op for that, shevas AI was appalling!
if i had a nickle for everytime she used a green herb on me when i had like 99% of my health left…… well you get the idea.
she was always using the really strong guns like the shotgun on the weakest enemies, i always had to keep as little with her because she kept wasting ammo, health, whatever you gave her!
for a co-op game, or a mindless zombie shooter its a fun game but thats the problem its trying to be what its not.
RE is suppose to be a survival horror game, not a L4D wannabee!

I only have time for one Indiana Jones adventure, and since the Drake games have spoiled me, this one will have to be special in order for me to pick it up.

Your right, Drake is coming soon. Crystal Dynamics knows this and are competing with Drake. They will have to come up with something special to go toe to toe with U3!

meh, the game will be great but I really hate the fact that this is not the original Lara Croft. Instead or re-imagining her the should've given us a new character.

I'm passing on this. Possible great game, not bashing. Purely subjectively passing on it. Don't like it when they "reboot" series. Just look at DMC.

Never thought i'd be interested in what seemed like a dying franchise.

Then they gave us this.

And it changed all of that.

It does look impressive & imo i thought it was one of the better trailers of E3, behind Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3 & Gears 3.

But i'm not going to get too excited just yet as i thought Legend & Underworld were average TR games at best. But this is looking like something special.

Looking forward to seeing more gameplay on it.

Well there was a video of the early part of the game and it was a series of QTEs. That's not a bad thing in my opinion. Gives me a chance to oogle the hot new Lara some more… I mean, focus on the story.

Seems like she lost a bit of Bewbs but she still looks great. That new look suits her well imo. As for the tearing it should be a problem on the PC version if there is one 😛
I always get my mutiplat on PC instead of consoles which are using graphic card 3 generation behind todays PC 😛
