DUST 514: The “Persistent Shooter” Powered By Choice

If you missed it during Sony's press conference last night, you'll want to check out the trailer.

And if you desire more information on this unique project, you'll definitely want to head over to the PlayStation Blog and learn more about the concept of a "persistent shooter." …don't take that literally.

It's that first paragraph of description that will convince you that this sci-fi MMO is nothing like Call of Duty or Killzone or any other FPS. In fact, it's really nothing like anything you've played before. Well, if you've never played EVE Online , that is:

"When playing your FPS title of choice, have you ever wished that there was something more to it beyond your rank, weapon unlocks, your kill/death ratio and leaderboard prominence? Those things are all great – but what if those matches you fought in actually meant something? What if your successes and failures against your opponents impacted the course of events in a vast setting, potentially changed a virtual world and the gameplay experience of thousands of other players? More than that, what if that impact was felt across two separate games – one on PS3 and one on PC/Mac – that share the same sci-fi universe?"

Those of you who love EVE Online will understand where these developers are coming from, and will be intrigued at this new way of experiencing the EVE universe. The "persistent" part involves the MMO aspect; the world of DUST 514 is always there even when your PlayStation 3 is off, so you're "taking part in something greater than your own individual experience of that world."

Furthermore, your actions will have an impact on your surroundings. And with "thousands of solar systems," one can only imagine how far the ripples caused by those actions will travel. It's a great read so check out the full article, future MMO fans.

The combat element of it reminded me of Vanquish – sort of. but I agree with you completely. This is exactly the kind of game I have wanted for years and years. A sci-fi game with the strategic element of building an empire, taking planets and such, but also being on the ground in combat. All those hours sunk into some sci-fi based online strategy game building an empire. I always wanted to do more than move things around like some general moving pieces around in a 'sand-box'.

This looked awesome.

Indeed you are right sir, I forgot to add

Strategy CHECK
Character customization CHECK
Ingame economy CHECK
Coop CHECK

I could have wished it was more of a RPG rather than a shooter, also pvn content too and not all pvp, but beggars can't be choosers. And I *beg* for a decent persistent, strategic mmo these days, with or without the trailing "rpg".

I'm with beamboom, i hope this does well because it has daaamn loads of potential. Thats sick, the whole affecting the bigger universe thing from your actions, that'd be sick in gameplay.
Hope this one does do well.

So this is just for the PS3? No PC version?

From the sound of it, it is only on PS3 but the universe is set within the developers' Eve universe.

I believe it's PC and PS3, If I remember correctly you can go cross-platform with PC gamers as well. Unless It was a different game that I'm thinking of at E3.

There is no PC version, but apparently Dust 514 and EVE online will run off the same servers.

Sorry, off-topic but I have to ask:any word on when your Infamous 2 review will be up, Ben? It doesn't come out here in the UK until friday, so I'd like to here your take on it!

If you liked the first one, you have to get the second one. I managed to get the games yesterday and it is awesome. You are able to continue your good or evil stories, I thought that was very nice. Better visuals and smoother gameplay.

Sorry for being off topic.

Sounds like MAG. Yes, the PC/PS3 cross over is unique, but premise is similar to MAG.

Looking Glass

I just checked the PS Blog and it's been confirmed that it's PS3 exclusive. No PC version if that's what you mean. Unless of course you're referring to the fact that it takes place in the same virtual galaxy as EVE Online.

And yes, it is similar to MAG in a basic sense. In other words a shooter with a persistent online world. But the thing is from what I've been able to gather DUST 514 is going to be taking this concept to much greater heights than MAG.

Indeed. My only hope is that you are correct, and and it doesn't come with a monthly service fee.

The way they talk about the players of Dust 514 and EVE Online being distinct and separate forces reminded me of starship troopers where you have the grunts who go in and take out the bugs, and the fly-boys who fly the ships and so the orbital bombardments. That's a neat way to bridge two different games into the same universe. Making allies of EVE players so that you can call on their orbital strikes or other abilities to augment your own, similarly they can do the same. It makes each game specific to a branch of service – Dust 514 players are the space marines, and the EVE players are the Naval forces. Nice.

That sounds pretty cool actually. This could be my shooter of 2012.

Yes it sounds *awsome*, no less. Two individual games, on two different platforms even, slightly overlapping eachother… I mean, *thats* new, and just incredibly cool.

Wonder if it will be possible to create persistent squads/guilds/orgs (whatever they would call it) too, like in "real" mmorpgs?
If so it would be a honour to serve as a member of the PSXE-squad!

I was wondering that. It would make sense since that way a group of players can ally with an EVE player or alliance.

@max (first post)

…and just like MAG, I was interested until I learned it was an FPS. Shame, really.

I just find everything about FPSs so limited by the conventions of the genre.

It's also free to play, I believe

Yep, microtransactions for in-game equipment. You can buy most of it with in-game credits too, but of course real cash get's you things a bit quicker…

Beamboom
Beamboom

Personally I would have preferred a monthly fee (I think it's more fair) but I believe this is the right decision, a more gentle way to introduce a new gamer crowd to the mmo concept. Also, it's how EVE is based already, so yeah.

Free-to-play MMOs are popular now. I wouldn't be surprised if FF14 became free-to-play too.

Beamboom
Beamboom

… As long as it don't affect the quality of the game (I'm now primary thinking of the typical mmorpg style games)! They got to finance the continuous support and further development somehow, or we will just be handed a world that is dead on arrival, sort to speak.

Clamedeus
Clamedeus

Nice you can buy stuff with in game credits? Sweet, I'm not much on the monthly subscription thing but this is a good thing for me. 😀

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Yeah, from what I read you can buy some with in-game credits. I think it will be like the facebook games where you can buy certain things in-game, but the best stuff takes real cash. I also anticipate that many of the things you can buy will have a certain number of uses before requiring a replacement – which will drive a continuing revenue stream as long as people play the game.

Beamboom
Beamboom

Now I'm thinking very traditional mmorpg here, but I would not be surprised if *all* items can be bought or obtained ingame – just some of them being very, very time consuming or hard to get.
And then the easy solution becomes very tempting… A moment later… Ka-ching! One more micro-sale. 🙂

@Beamboom

I don't mind getting Items/weapons etc the hard way, but it also depends on what it is for me, and how badly I need it.

Beamboom
Beamboom

Me too, Clam! I love getting the hard-to-get stuff. The epic experiences in a mmorpg are usually related to achieving such goals. Especially the large quests.

But let's not forget now that Dust is *not* a mmorpg, "just" a shooter. Still, one can always hope. 🙂

Fane1024
Fane1024

LOTRO made more money after it went free-to-play (at least initially), so I don't think that will necessarily hinder development.

Beamboom
Beamboom

That's good to hear, Fane! I wish all good things for mmorpgs, though I've never tried Lord of the rings.
And I'm not surprised, now that I think about it. Once you're into a mmorpg one tend to get very involved. Money don't matter as much then. 🙂

… I just have to remind myself, Dust is *not* a mmorpg.

Here I come PC elitist!

IT would be cool if you took the same interests into dc universe online. By the way, Dust is not exclusive to the pc, mac, and ps3. It's also coming in the same or somewhat different form on the 360.

Don't believe me? Go on their website. It literally says it. How can the president, vice president, or head manager go right in front of a stage at e3 and says it's pc/mac and ps3 exclusive?

It looks like a cross between vanquish and halo, but without the aliens. I don't know if there aliens or not in this game. Glad it uses the move though.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Timed exclusive?

Also, I don't know how a 360 version would work. XBL is a closed network. Microsoft have never allowed any 360 game product to see out of XBL or interact with another network like this. that's one of the things that has been a problem for people in the past. You don't see Steam delivery on 360 do you? Microsoft has rules against developers bringing their third party services into the XBL environment.

Marcus, I still got dc universe on my list. It's just… It looks *so* much like "City of heroes", a game I've played almost too much, I grew really tired of it. Still, as soon as I find dc universe in the bargain bin I shall give it a months run, at least! The mmorpg's on this platform must be supported.

And Highlander, I think the point you make there is the very reason why this is an exclusive in the first place.
