New Final Fantasy XIII-2 Details: Story, Structure, Combat

We're perfectly willing to give Square Enix multiple chances to deliver a Final Fantasy that satisfies the hardcore long-time fans.

And although most aren't counting on the Final Fantasy XIII sequel to be the RPG they've been waiting for (many are assuming FFXIII-2 will be more action-based), we'll be intrigued by any information. And provided the details are accurate in this VGN.it preview , we're semi-excited to see what the game will include. The translation is funky but there seem to be juicy tidbits in the "old and new" section; check these out:

"Square Enix seems to have gotten the message of the fans and more than a few occasions has reiterated that in this sequel will attempt to rectify past mistakes and build a more complete and satisfactory as it is deemed, however, still shrouded in mystery."

…okay. Does that mean we get our freakin' towns back? And here's something about the combat system:

"Regarding the information about the battle system, developers have become more unbalanced, claiming that the CSB, Sinergy Battle Command, will also return in this sequel with some improvements and ideas that were originally rejected at the time of the output prequel."

Feel free to read the rest and tell us what you think…

I've finished XIII, but I really dislike the lack of strategy in the battles. I mean other than the times you have to switch paradigms, it's all about mashing the X button on the controller. If they could somehow put a bit more strategy on the battle system, then it would be great.

At this point in time though, I don't have a lot of trust on Square-Enix. They really have to prove that they actually listened to the right set of people, the fans who supported their games from the get-go. But as for me, I'll reserve judgment until I see it for myself. To a lot of fans though, they're at their last straws.

If they are listening to the majority of the people then their listening to the right set, but sadly it might not be the ones we want. Money conquers all…

I'll be curious, but honestly XIII was the biggest disappointment I've had from Square in 20 years of playing their games. I refuse to get my hopes up over it, but if it gets stellar reviews I'm down. If not, embargo on Square until Versus XIII or KH3.

i actually enjoyed ff13 a lot despite its flaws. for me, it was a definite improvement over the painfully dull and empty feeling ff12. i especially disliked ff12's mmo type battle system.

it would be great if ff13-2 would let us swap out characters during battle much like ff10 did. obviously, removing the killing tubes, and restoring traditional shops and towns would be great. i'm pretty excited about ff13-2, and look forward to the improvements

I agree, they had no business removing the separate screen ATB for XII and implementing that western styled thing.

I liked FF12's battle system… A LOT better than FF13's.

it has no business in FF. Dragon Age yes.

Dunno look at White Knight Chronicles. The story is crap. But the battle system (that is an improved version of FFXII) is actually pretty neat and allows for a lot of customization and tactics in your skills combos. FFXIII's combat system was *for the most part* a boring button masher.

So I don't think a similar system (to FFXII) does not have it's place in an FF game. Allows a lot of strategy but the only difference is that you don't have a breaking mirror + 7 years of bad luck every 2 seconds you move around and could actually see the enemy that is beside you. lol

Although I am saying that, I still love the old mirror breaking battle system but I think it is good to change it from final to final as long as it makes sense.

I FFXII as a whole. And I also liked the battle system, and I liked being able to see the enemies on screen so I could avoid the weak enemies that were just a nuisance. I also liked the gambit system so you could control your characters manually, or speed things up when you wanted to.

Looking forward to any word on FFXIII-2, so long as they stay away from the way they did FFX-2….that was an "interesting" game.

Not to mention that Sony has been doing AR for games for years before the 3DS.

@Ps3gamer4ever: So the PS2 ripped off something that came after it?? Wow, I didn't know Benjamin Button existed in real life! Nice try, trolling under the guise of such a username.

@Ps3gamer4ever
So according to your logic, none of the current gen consoles should use game controllers, use vibration, use TV screens for display, use game disks, or use non-gaming media (music, videos, photos) because they're ripping off from devices/consoles that used them first. >_>

@Ps3gamer4ever actually it's not like 3DS at all, 3DS uses cards to represents AR, but smartAR uses real life objects, like posters and photos as you can see from the video, this stuff with a touch screen(NGP)is gonna be amazing, just think about the possibilities.

Err…a couple of things guys….

1) I think you all misinterpreted Ps3gamer4ever. He's saying the stuff on the left side ripped off the right side. And I agree. Kinect totally ripped off of a ten year old technology, the PlayStation Eye.

2) Ps3gamer4ever…they're right too. No need for negativity. Though I see your point.

3) Shifting back to the main topic….FINAL FANTASY XIII-2. Looks dumb. The prequel was dumb. I was greatly disappointed. I don't want them to "make it up" by completing the story. I want them to make a better game. Period. Better yet. Just scratch Final Fantasy and go for the gold: Kingdom Hearts. Let's wrap that up for real because I'm sick of these stupid DS 8-bit spin-offs

Well, I hope they did get the message and I hope "Sinergy Battle Command, will also return in this sequel" means we will be able to control all characters and won't stock autobattles

The fact is, XIII was still a good game if a pitiful FF. And I like Lightning. I won't posture, I'm getting this game even if it is just a cheap way for SquareEnix to cash in and make up their huge cash losses.

Excelsior1

i hope they did get the message. they need to get some of the "twitch" out of the battle system. there actually was depth and strategy in the ff13's battle system, but it flew by so fast you hardly noticed it.

I will probably wait on the price too depending on what's out, cuz they always overship these titles and they go down in price fast. XIII price dropped like a stone.

Nothing like getting a game that's loaded with "ideas that were originally rejected." Was SE so far below budget on FFXIII that now they're going to give us their cutting floor scraps and pretend like it's the content fans have always wanted?

I started playing XIII during my holiday break, only got up to chapter 7 at the time but because I had such low expectations for it after hearing the backlash it ended up being better than I had hoped.

However the changes and linearity were obvious and the battle system took some getting used to.

Final fantasy 13 became a drag to me. So linear though the story was the only reason I kept going.
Man I miss when you had to find your own way somewhere (wondering the final fantasy 8 world map for hours) and also if you went the wrong way, you would get owned by powerful enemies.
It's almost like they think we have gotten stupider or something.

I'm pretty sure that is exactly what they think. We want to appeal to mainstream players… Don't make it too hard and keep it simple XD

That's cool, but playing through FFIV, I'm not really understanding the mass hatred for XIII. No, the story isn't as good imo, but I think the Crystarium was a better system than simply levelling up and gaining extra abilities at random. I do like the non-linearity of FFIV, but I don't see the issue with XIII on that matter (well, I do actually. I can't deny that it was overly corridor-sy). And the battle system is balanced. It is slightly faster and far flashier, and only being able to control one character is disappointing. But the multiple bar ATB gauge is a smart inclusion, and the paradigms are marvellous, but I do think that it could be better.

Can S-E get it right with XIII-2 and perhaps show us a positive light in the future of FF? They most certainly can, but the real question is will they?
Peace.

High-5, Zettai!

I tried playing FF13 after I completed the story mode but grew bored fast. Might go back and give it another chance. I'll wait on the reviews for this one, like I did with 13.

Doubt it… this game from the feeling I get is scheduled to be released BEFORE final fantasy versus xiii…. so chances are they won't incorporate any changes – at least it won't be as good as we would hope

Hey guys,

I've once again obtained some internet access. I just want to say how blessed I feel, not only that my wife and I are ok, but that I have so many friends, around me and here at psx.

Thank you for your prayers, your good thoughts, for everything. We have been blessed because we have family to take us in, we actually managed to salvage quite a few belongings. Our house is gone, but God is still taking care of us.

I can't thank everyone enough, I just ask you pray for Joplin and continue to keep us with you as there are a lot of people who have it worse than we do. Just know we appreciate all your prayers and God is indeed taking care of us.

I'd personally rather Square-Enix not make FF XIII-2. They need to concentrate on KH3 and FF Versus XIII…I dont care about lightning at all, she's just a female version of Cloud
