Unfortunately, you won't be perusing the PlayStation Store today. Or tomorrow, for that matter.

Last week, we heard unofficial reports that the Store would come back online on May 24 but as you can see, that isn't the case. As Sony Computer Entertainment America social media manager Jeff Rubenstein said at the PlayStation Blog : "Contrary to reports, the store will not be publishing today." We've also heard from European blog manager James Gallagher, who said the Store won't be opening tomorrow, either; for the time being, Sony will be doing more maintenance. The good news is that the deadline for full PSN functionality is still May 31 so hopefully, we won't have much longer to wait. As of now, most people can easily play online and other services have been successfully restored, too.

We'll be patient for now. We're pretty interested in future digital games, though, like thatgamecompany's Journey .

It makes a lot of difference for me. I still can't download my LA Noire DLC. I preordered LA Noire and I'm playing through it when the PSN is down. Considering there's no multiplayer and a detective game, after the first run, the game won't be as fun as when you first broke the seal. By the time I can download the DLC, the game itself is probably in the corner of the game pile.

I seriously doubt that they did anything, given the new security of the PSN. Let's keep in mind that the May 24th thing was never actually confirmed by Sony.

___________
___________

what new security?
$ony has learned jack sh*t!
one of there greek sites got hacked yesterday!
AGAIN!
looks like sony cares just as much about security as they do about all there fans outside the US!

Looking Glass

Wrong again No-name.

I specifically referred to the PSN security, not that of other Sony websites.

The PSN is doing just fine.

___________

so?
just because its not from PSN its ok?
come on no one can be that arrogant!
O, and are we forgetting about the password reset link?
that was PSN linked, and that fell to pieces!
$onys security is as tightly sealed as the freaking titanic!

Nice Try no-name.

While that website may have been linked to the PSN. It was not a part of the PSN. And nobody broke into the system that time. Sony simply discovered a pre-existing security hole and quickly moved to fix it.

And security breaches happen all the time. Hell, even the freaking Pentagon has been hacked before. It's not fair to single Sony out for this kind of thing. Hell, it wasn't even the largest breach in history. It was only the fourth largest. This is part of a larger picture that involves everyone who has an online system or systems.

While it might be true that at least some of all these various companies and organizations could have been better prepared for this kind of thing the fault ultimately lies with those who perpetrate such attacks: the hackers. And I for one refuse to be intimidated by them. I intend to keep supporting Sony for as long as I can for the purpose of, among other things like personal enjoyment, giving these self-righteous assholes the finger.

This might actually work in Sony's favor. Believe it or not from what I've been able to gather the sales of PS3 units is actually going surprisingly well.

I think it's a strong possibility that word of the upcoming welcome back package might actually be helping sales of PS3 units to new, first time owners. After all, if you've never owned a PS3 console before now would actually be a pretty good time to get one. There's the recent massive security upgrade of the PSN for one but with the welcome back package a new owner is not only getting a video game console but also two free games. More if you count the PSP stuff. And of course there's all the other stuff. This is by all accounts a pretty sweet deal. But the deal is only available for 30 days after the restoration of the PS Store. So since the restoration of the store is going to take another week that actually gives more people more time to get in on the action.

As for the people who have already had one for a while, we're going to have one hell of a time come the end of the month. We're going to have several weeks of new, unreleased content to go through. And that's not even taking into account the Welcome back package. Overall it's going to be a party well worth the wait. As for me, I think I'll probably pick up that new Red Johnson adventure game.

LazyVigilante
LazyVigilante

err..but aren't you supposed to have a PSN account already by the time the hacking happened, to take advantage of their welcome back program??…So I guess new PS3 owners can't avail the offer unless they had a PSN account from before the hack occurred…Right??

Looking Glass

@LazyVigilante

That's a possibility. But I myself have not actually heard anything to that effect. Is there an official source that verifies that?

Ushr

Im pretty sure you only get the Welcome-Back package if you already had an account before the breach, hence the Welcome BACK not welcome to Playstation , i could be wrong but what i read was you have to still have your original account and PS3

Here's a link:

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/05/16/details-of-the-welcome-back-programme-for-scee-users-2/

and an excerpt:

For eligibility for the welcome back programme consumers must be an account holder on 20 April 2011. Specific details about these offers and eligibility requirements will be posted as the services go live. All existing PSN registrants have 30 days from when the welcome back programme goes live to redeem their content.

@Neo

Well, in that case it seems to be somewhat of an open question as to why the PS3 units are selling well in spite of the bad publicity for Sony. The killer software lineup maybe?

But hey, I guess there's no point in looking a gift horse in the mouth.

I don't care about the welcome back package because it does absolutely nothing for me, what I do want is to be able to use my damn codes for LA Noire and to be able to enter my on-line pass for MK and to get DLC for games that has come out during this whole ordeal. I know that Sony never gave a solid date but I am getting tired of waiting to be honest.

Dude I'm am with you all the way. I want to download some Fallout DLC and use my LA Noire code…dammit. And I can't access my saved download for ACBrotherhood because I deleted the DLC that keeps it active…now I can't continue where I wanted because I can't redownload. ANd this is why digital is a bad way to go.

Oh well in that case hopefully Codemasters will waive the online pass for Dirt 3 temporarily I would really like to play their awesome racer online.

Yes…$40 dolloars sounds nice. Not sure if the demand will increase, but I know hesitant buyers like myself won't be as hesitant anymore. I want Dirt 3, yet I have to save whatever little spare money I have just to get Infamous 2…Jesus. Cheaper games, healthy market, and less publishers b*tching.

"at least"? I think you meant "at most".

Your many errors undermine your argument. Twice you said the opposite of what you meant to say.

Also, you aren't going to support the developers, but they're the greedy ones?

I always buy games at less than full price, but rarely used. If I did buy a used game, I'd anticipate the $10 charge and factor it into my cost-value calculation.

Man Sony is either being lazy or their system is really f'd right now. Come on man, its been forever now. Some games need DLC to continue from your saved game like ACBrotherhood and without it, I can't continue without starting over which I am not about to do. Sony, get it together please. Either way, its not a big deal…lol They just need to hurry up you know
